Richard D. Blankenship

CENTERVILLE — Richard D. Blankenship, 90, of Welch-Pineville Road, Centerville, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, following a long illness.

Born March 31, 1918, in Welch, he was the son of the late Stonewall Jackson Blankenship and Alea Victoria Keen Blankenship.

Mr. Blankenship was a retired miner from Slab Fork Coal Mines and was a member of the UMWA for 43 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and was a member of Indian Creek Community Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Edna E. Slagle Blankenship, on July 11, 2006; a son, Richard Carl Blankenship; and a daughter, Beverly Jo Stepp.

Survivors include two sons, James K. Blankenship and his wife, Kathy, of Lisbon, Ohio, and Morris J. Blankenship and his wife, Claudette, of Centerville; a sister, Connie Matthews of Virginia; a special son-in-law, Landon Stepp of Point Pleasant; nine grandchildren, Bryan Stepp, David Blankenship, Michael Ikirt, Jacob Blankenship, Richard Blankenship, Joshua Blankenship, Leslie Hipes, Ericka Blankenship and Jamie Blankenship; 12 great-grandchildren; and a nephew.

A celebration of Richard’s life will be 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton.

Pallbearers will be James K. Blankenship, Morris J. Blankenship, Richard Blankenship, Jacob Blankenship, Joshua Blankenship, Bryan Stepp and John Landon Hipes. Honorary pallbearer will be Landon Stepp.

Family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Military rites will be conducted by the Wyoming County Honor Guard.

GILBERT — Jimmy Davis, 38, of Gilbert, passed away Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008.

MOUNT NEBO — The Rev. William H. “Johnny” Griffin, 65, of Mount Nebo, Nicholas County, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008.

Funeral service will be noon Tuesday, Aug. 19, at White Funeral Home, Summersville. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Timothy Wayne Hinkle

SUMMERSVILLE — Timothy Wayne Hinkle, 45, of Summersville, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, in Summersville.

He was the son of Charles H. and Phyllis Bryant Hinkle of Canvas and was born at Summersville on April 5, 1963.

He was a local businessman and owner of T.C. Transport and Jim’s Used Cars. He was a member of New Life Assembly in Summersville, the TKE fraternity, the WVMTA Board of Directors and was president of the E.P. White Wildlife Club.

Other than his parents, survivors include his wife, Tamara Y. Mullens Hinkle; a son, Timothy C. Hinkle, and a daughter, Farrah N. Hinkle, both at home; and a brother, Larry White of Beckley.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Summersville Nazarene Tabernacle with the Rev. Dennis Chasteen and the Rev. Gene Campbell officiating. Burial will follow at Bryant Family Cemetery, Canvas.

Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of service Monday at the tabernacle.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to New Life Christian Academy, 899 Broad St., Summersville, WV 26651.

Lisa Marie Holstein

PACKS BRANCH — Lisa Marie Holstein, 42, of Packs Branch, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division, following a long illness.

Born Nov. 25, 1965, at Elyria, Ohio, she was the daughter of Steve L. Holstein and Sharon Williams Holstein of Packs Branch.

Lisa was a former retail salesperson and attended Bradley Freewill Baptist Church. She is a child of the King. She also had attended Beckley College.

Other than her parents, survivors include her daughter, Kristen Roberts and her companion, Nicholas Logan, of Mount Hope; a granddaughter, Alyssa Logan; Lisa’s former husband, Craig Roberts of Point Pleasant; brothers, David Holstein and his wife, Lisa, of Beckley and their children, Zachary, Savannah, Emma Grace and Ethan Holstein; a special niece and David’s daughter from a previous marriage, Jennifer Leonard and her husband, Travis, and their son, Cason, of Kansas; Steve Franklin Holstein and wife, Jill, of Wheeling and Jamie Holstein and wife, Jennifer, of Beckley and their children, Tyler and Austin Holstein, both of Beckley; many uncles, aunts, friends and extended family; Lisa’s lifelong best friend, Kimberly Menei Ferrell of Chesapeake; and her special friend, Sam Pack of North Carolina.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Bradley Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Wayne Peters officiating. Burial will follow at Dock Lively Cemetery, Long Branch.

Friends may call two hours before service at the church.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Sheila Elizabeth ‘Pee Wee’ Johnson Hubert

Sheila Elizabeth “Pee Wee” Johnson Hubert, 62, of Shady Spring, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House.

Born Oct. 23, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Effie Basham Johnson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Hubert; three sisters, Ramona Davenport, Leona Carlson and Shelby O’Connor; brothers, Elwood, Stephen, Glendale Ray, David E. and Monty Dwight Johnson; and an infant brother, Delano Johnson.

Mrs. Hubert was a former employee of Beckett Gas Co. and was of the Baptist faith. She was also a volunteer at the VA hospital in Beckley.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Alan Hubert of Shagrin Falls, Ohio; daughter, Tina Heaton and husband Brian of Cleveland; three grandchildren, Shawna, Amber and Drake Heaton; two sisters, Zivia Powers and Drema Pack and husband Glen; a brother, Gerald Johnson and wife Gale; and her caregivers, Charlene, Robin and Joe.

Service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Chaplain Mark Iobst officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Roger Shrewsbury, James R. Pack, Jeff Duckworth, James M. Pack, John M. Pack and John Hissett.

Mary Stansbury Morton

QUARRYVILLE, Pa. — Mary Stansbury Morton, 88, died at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community on Wednesday, July 9, 2008.

Mary was born in Morgantown on May 8, 1920, the daughter of the late Harry and Ada Stansbury.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Morton, and brothers, Harry, Bill, Bud, Bunk and Sam.

She is survived by her brother, Jim, and her sister, Pat, and her four sons and her grandchildren, Paul Wailes Morton and his wife, Carolee, son Ben and daughter Emily of East Greenwich, R.I., Charles Stansbury Morton and his wife, Sharon, sons Chris and Adam and daughter Elizabeth of Fayetteville and Myrtle Beach, S.C., D. Holmes Morton, M.D., and his wife, Caroline, daughters, Mary and Sarah, and son, Paul, of Strasburg, Pa., and Frank H. Morton and his wife, Karen, sons Taj and Kit of Philamouth, Ore.

Mary was a homemaker and a golfer, having won the White Oak Country Club Women’s Championship in 1963, 1964, 1965, 1969 and 1971. Mary participated in the State Women’s Amateur tournament and was chairman of the tournament Rules Committee for many years. Mary was an avid watercolor painter and was known for her Chinese renderings which were sold and shown in local art shows around Beckley for many years.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Aug. 28 at First Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Morton home, 212 W. Maple Ave. in Fayetteville, following the service. Private burial service will be at End of the Trail Cemetery at Sam Black Church in Greenbrier County later that same day.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community for the loving and wonderful care they gave to our mother the last months of her life.

Edith Ray Thomas

Edith Ray Thomas, 83, of Pluto Road, Shady Spring, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at the Raleigh Center in Daniels following a long illness.

Born Feb. 11, 1925, at Mabscott, she was the daughter of the late Steve Underwood and Verna Weidensall Underwood Acosta and was the stepdaughter of the late John Acosta and Edith Underwood.

She was a homemaker and a charter member of First Church of the Nazarene in Beckley. She had lived in the Pluto Road area for over 27 years.

Edith was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed camping on the Greenbrier River.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Dennis Dwayne Thomas, and a brother, Steve Underwood Jr.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Dennis Thomas; two sons, Scott Thomas and wife, Sara, of Vienna, Va., and David Thomas and wife, Debbie, of Marietta, S.C.; three daughters, Deena Scintilla and her husband, Ron, of Suffolk, Va., Diana Wills and her husband, David, of Shady Spring and Debbie Thomas of Culpeper, Va.; a brother, Raymond Acosta of Culpeper; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel, Shady Spring, with the Rev. George Garner officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.
