Ruth Rose Bendy
OAK HILL — Ruth Rose Bendy, was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Nov. 7, 1911, she died on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008.
Ruth spent her childhood and most of her adult life in New Jersey, she moved to Oak Hill in 1993.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bud” Bendy.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Bendy Jr. M.D. of Fayetteville and his wife, Irene, and Richard Bendy and his wife, Joann of Knoxville, Tenn. Ruth also has two grandchildren, Janet Bendy and Jeffrey Bendy and his wife, Deborah. She was blessed with three great-grandchildren whom she dearly loved. They are Jeffrey William, age 12, Margaret Elizabeth (Maggie), age 10, and Ruth Ann, age 8, all of Knoxville, Tenn.
Ruth was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and was a member of the Oak Hill Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She lived a full and happy life and had many friends. She was loved by everyone and will be sadly missed.
There will be no viewing, however, a memorial service for Ruth will be 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Willywood Ave. in Oak Hill.

Richard Dewey Blankenship, 90, of the Wech-Pineville Road, passed away Friday August 15, 2008, at Bower's Hospice House.

Jackie O. Browning Sr.
CLENDENIN — Jackie O. Browning Sr., 59, of Clendenin, W.Va., died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, in Charleston, W.Va.
He was born Nov. 17, 1948, at Verner, W.Va., the son of the late Foster and Norma Osborne Browning.
Jackie was a U.S. Army veteran having been awarded the bronze star for his services in Vietnam. He was a member of the American Legion, Logan, W.Va. He worked as a maintenance mechanic at Case Farms, Wineburg, Ohio.
He is survived by his wife, Stella “Bonnie” Walls Browning; son and daughter-in-law, Jackie O. Browning Jr. and Loretta of Lorado; son, Christopher Lee Browning of Clendenin; daughter and son-in-law, Jeannie Renee and Charles Hunt of Lorado; four sisters, Carol Ann Dixon of Matheny, Linda Browning of Oceana, Sandy Snuffer of Glen Daniel, and Teresa Browning of Florida; two brothers, Theodore Browning of Indianapolis, Ind. and Ricky Browning of Oceana; and four grandchildren, Tyler and Amber Browning and Dustin and Cameron Hunt.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nora Jean Browning; two brothers, Robert and Billy Joe Browning.
Services will be 1 p.m. (today) Saturday, Aug. 16, at Mt. Olive Freewill Baptist Church, Lawford, W.Va., with Elder Chester Osborne officiating. Burial will follow in the Basham Cemetery, Auburn.
Friends may call one hour prior o the services today at the church.

ANSTED — Terry Allen Chappel, 50, passed away Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, in a South Charleston hospital.

Mary Elizabeth Knapp Dodd
TALCOTT — Mary Elizabeth Knapp Dodd, age 76, of Hungards Creek Road, Talcott, formerly of Alderson, died Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at Summers County ARH Hospital, Hinton, W.Va., following a long illness.
Born September 17, 1931 at Notamine, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Emmett G. and Glenna Mae Rader Knapp. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Dodd; a son, James L. Dodd Jr.; two brothers, Harold Knapp and Charles Knapp; and a son-in-law, Frederick S. Hardesty.
Mrs. Dodd was a homemaker and a former employee of Summers County Hospital, Hinton, where she worked as a switchboard operator and in admissions. She was a 1949 graduate of Alderson High School and was a member of the Griffith Creek Baptist Church, Alderson. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, and any type of handwork. Mrs. Dodd was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who was devoted to her family and special friends. Her most prized possession was her family.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Rider and her husband, David "Mike" Rider, of Hungards Creek Road, Talcott, with whom Mrs. Dodd made her home for the past 26 years, and Joanne Hardesty Lightner and her husband, John "Rockie" Lightner, of Alderson; a brother, E. Grayson Knapp Jr. of Alderson; a sister, Anna Mae Chesher of Buchanan Dam, Texas; five grandchildren, Alice Billups, Laura Wills and her husband, Allen, Kristi Crouch, Amy Brooks and her husband, Donald, and Sidney Jo Hardesty; six great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; daughter-in-law, Doris Griffith and her husband, Larry, and daughter, Amanda, of Alderson; special niece and caregiver, Janice Thompson; special caregiver, Marilyn Gunter; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, August 17, 2008 at the Griffith Creek Baptist Church, Alderson with Pastor Audie Sorg and Paul Dodd officiating. Burial will follow at Rosewood Cemetery, Lewisburg.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today (Saturday), August 16, 2008, at the Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson and one hour prior to services at the church on Sunday.
Serving as pallbearers will be the Men of the Griffith Creek Baptist Church.

Roger L. Hamrick
CHARLESTON — Roger L. Hamrick, 67, of Charleston, formerly, of Richwood, passed away Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at his home.
He was born December 18, 1940, the son of the late W.S. (Friday) and Kathleen (Gussie) Hamrick of Fenwick Mt.
He was preceded in death by his brother Bobby.
Roger was a graduate of Richwood High School and Capitol City Commercial College with a degree in accounting and business administration. He was a member of Richwood Moose Lodge No. 770, Legion of Moose No. 123 Charleston, W.Va., Holder of Fellowship Degree, member of Masonic AF&AM Summersville Lodge No. 76, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Beni Kedem Shriner, Beni Kedem Oriental Band, Nicholas County Motor Corp. and Nicholas County Shrine Club.
He was retired from Arch Coal Co. Mingo Logan Division after a 38 year career with Pittson Coal, Smoot Coal, Leckie Smokeless as a mine foreman and fire boss.
Survivors include his children, Pam and husband Clint Peters, Jacksonville, Fla., Rodney and wife Debbie Hamrick, Columbus, Ohio, and Eric Hamrick, Kannapolis, N.C.; step children, Toni Malcomb, Milton, W.Va., Dale Jones, Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Gina Fout, Charlotte, N.C. Grandchildren, Lanae Peters, Casey and Shelby Hamrick; sisters, Kay Swearingen, Bonnie Bennett and Kathy Orndorff, Fenwick, Mt., W.Va.; and brothers, Gary, Willis, Ronnie and Donnie Hamrick, Fenwick, Mt.
Services will be 11 a.m. (today) Saturday, August 16, 2008 at the West Virginia Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Calvin, W.Va., with the Rev. Jadie Morris officiating. Interment will be in Chapel in the Hills Mausoleum, Calvin.

Richard ‘Dukes’ Howard III
Richard “Dukes” Howard III, 57, of North Liberty, Iowa, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, due to an extended illness.
Richard was preceded n death by his father, Richard, and infant brother, Daryl.
Richard was born Sept. 28, 1950, in Sullivan, W.Va., the son of Richard and Laura Francis (Finney) Howard.
He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley. He loved sports and was a formidable boxer during those years. He was such a good boxer that he was given the nick name of ”Dukes”. Following high school he began to work for Procter and Gamble where he worked for more than 35 years. In 1981 Richard met Lillie Dotson and the two moved to North Liberty from Omaha, NE and were married. Richard enjoyed traveling, fishing, outings, relaxing at home, and most of all spending time with family.
His family includes his loving wife, Lillie of North Liberty, mother Laura Francis Howard of Gary, Ind.; two sons, Anthony L. Howard of Indianapolis, Ind., Daryl M. Howard (Catherine) of Omaha, NE; daughter, Ashley Hawthorne (James) of Hinesville, Ga.; two step daughters, Sheila Dotson of Houston, Texas, Margarete Wallace (Eddie) of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Marcus A. Howard, Makaela’ N. Howard, Dasia Howard, Xavier Howard, Zoey Howard, Corey Wallace, Cambria Wallace; sisters, Joann Johnson, Paula Diane Lewis, Patricia L. Lowe, Cordelia R. Howard, Virgie Howard and Cassandra Howard, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, Anthony C. Howard (Linda); special aunts, Nancy David, Helen Lewis and Alberta Finney; uncles, Irvin Finney and George Reynolds; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Sheila Elizabeth Johnson Hubert ‘Pee Wee’
Sheila Elizabeth “Pee Wee” Johnson Hubert, age 62, of Shady Spring, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

Christopher Ryan Johnson
Christopher Ryan Johnson, 26, of Sophia died Wednesday, August 13, 2008, from injuries received in a motorcycle accident.
Born December 2, 1981 at Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of Paul N. Johnson and Laura Lester Phipps.
Christopher was a coal miner for Massey Coal Co. at Elkrun Mine and was a loving father, son and brother.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Garth and Louise Lester and his paternal grandfather, Newman Johnson.
Christopher was a loving and devoted father to Cassidy Johnson of Sophia; in addition to his daughter those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sarah May Johnson of Beckley; his mother, Laura Lester Phipps of Sophia; his father, Paul N. Johnson of Ostrander, Ohio; step father, Larry Phipps of Beckley; paternal grandmother, Patricia Johnson of Ostrander, Ohio; six brothers, Eric Anthony Johnson of Midway, Shawn Lee Johnson and his wife Tara of Ft. Lee, Va., Lucas Wayne Johnson and his wife Tasha of Oak Hill, Scott Everett Johnson and his wife Samatha of McGuire Air Force Base, N.J., Joey Lyndon Johnson and his wife Kimberly of Sophia and Joshua Allen Johnson of Huntington; a step brother, John Phipps of Nashville; a special friend of the family SGT. Virginia Louise McLean
ITMANN — Virginia Louise McLean, 83, of Itmann, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, August 14, 2008 at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.
Born August 14, 1925 in Konnarock, Va., she was the daughter of the late W.R. “Squire” Haga and Ines Walls Haga.
Louise was a 1944 graduate of Mullens High School, a member of the Itmann United Methodist Church, was an avid bowler and a former member of the senior league at Accu-Lanes.
She was preceded in death by her husband Boyd H. McLean, an infant grandson, John Boyd Salters and a brother, Bill Haga.
She is survived by a son; Bob McLean and wife Maggie of Barkers Ridge, three daughters; Joyce Salters and husband Johnny of Itmann, Mary Stevens and husband Glenn of Fairdale and Janet Hatfield and husband Russell of Itmann, one granddaughter, Christy Martin and husband Jim of Apopka Fla.; six grandsons, Mike McLean and wife Linda, Jackie McLean and wife Tracy, both of Barkers Ridge, Randy Salters and wife Sherry of Mullens, Keith Stevens and wife Melanie of MacArthur, Wesley Hatfield and wife Crystal, Jason Hatfield and Carla, both of Mullens; 12 great-grandchildren, Brittany and Courtney Salters, Nikki, Michelle, Wendi, Kaycee and Lexxi McLean, Haiden and Jordan Stevens and Wesley II, Waylon and Wade Hatfield; four brothers, James “Cotton” Haga and wife Tincie of Helen, Carl Haga and wife Rachel of Corinne and Wayne “Red” Haga and wife Rosa of Princeton; two sisters, Kay Sanford and husband Sandy of Aurora, CO. and Evelyn Mills and husband Sonny of Zephyrhills Fla.

Mary Stansbury Morton
QUARRYVILLE, Pa. — Mary Stansbury Morton, 88, died at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, Quarryville, on Wednesday, July 9, 2008.
Mary was born in Morgantown on May 8, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Ada Stansbury.
She was preceded in death by her husband Paul Morton and four brothers, Harry, Bill, Bud, Bunk and Sam.
She is survived by her brother Jim and her sister Pat and her four sons and her grandchildren; Paul Wailes Morton and his wife Carolee, son Ben and daughter Emily of East Greenwich RI; Charles Stansbury Morton and his wife Sharon, sons Chris and Adam and daughter Elizabeth of Fayetteville and Myrtle Beach SC; D Holmes Morton MD and his wife Caroline daughters Mary and Sarah and son Paul of Strasburg, PA and Frank H. Morton and his wife Karen, sons Taj and Kit of Philamouth OR.
Mary was a homemaker and a golfer having won the White Oak Country Club Women’s Championship in 1963, 1964, 1965, 1969 and 1971. Mary participated in the State Women’s Amateur tournament and was Chairman of the Tournament Rules Committee for many years. Mary was an avid watercolor painter and was known for her Chinese renderings which were sold and shown in local art shows around Beckley for many years.
Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, W.Va., on August 28, 2008. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Morton home, 212 W Maple Avenue in Fayetteville following the service. A private burial service will be at the End of the Trail Cemetery at Sam Black Church in Greenbrier County later that same day.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community for the loving and wonderful care they gave to our mother the last months of her life.

Juanita E. Rader
Juanita E. Rader, age 85, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at the Bowers Hospice House.
Born at Mount Hope, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Abner Vernon and Frances Neighbors Vernon Bonifacio.
Mrs. Rader was a homemaker, a woman of faith, a prayer warrior, and taught Sunday School at Crossroads Apostolic Church.
She had a passion for writing, having several poems published. She wrote a book, “Happenings by Coal Camp Diddy”, which was a legacy for her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil; her oldest son, Billy; sisters, Margaret Flint, Dorothy Stewart, Pauline Sampson, and brothers, Marvin Vernon and Alton Earl Woods.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Cecilia Davis and friend, Lewis Watson, Joan and Randy Hamilton, Connie and John Phillips, with whom she had made her home for five years; sons, Bob and Janet Rader, Marvin Rader and Shelley Cox-Rader and Gary Rader and companion, Leslie Wriston; daughter-in-law, Iris Rader; sisters, Viola Sasser, Barbara and Bill Thomas, Mary Vest, Brenda Morgan, and Betty Steen; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; and a special nephew, Joe Flint and wife, Connie.
Her remains rest at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Crossroads Apostolic Church with the Rev. James B. Miller and the Rev. Rudell Bloomfield officiating. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Sarah Shrewsbury
On Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, surrounded by those she cherished and loved, Sarah Shrewsbury passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter, Daisy Meadows Studley in Orlando, Fla. She was in her 87th year.

Edith Ray Thomas
Edith Ray Thomas, age 83, of Pluto Road, Shady Spring, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at the Raleigh Center in Daniels following a long illness.
Born Feb. 11, 1925, at Mabscott, she was the daughter of the late Steve Underwood and Verna Weidensall Underwood Acosta and was the step daughter of the late John Acosta and Edith Underwood.
She was a homemaker and a charter member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Beckley. She had lived in the Pluto Road area for over 27 years.
Edith was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed camping on the Greenbrier River.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Dennis Dwayne Thomas and a brother, Steve Underwood Jr.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Dennis Thomas; two sons, Scott Thomas and wife, Sara of Vienna, Va. and David Thomas and wife, Debbie of Marietta, S.C.; three daughters, Deena Scintilla and her husband, Ron of Suffolk, Va., Diana Wills and her husband, David of Shady Spring, and Debbie Thomas of Culpepper, Va.; a brother, Raymond Acosta of Culpepper, Va.; 10 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Shady Spring with the Rev. George Garner officiating. Entombment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
