Andrew Davis


Andrew Davis, 77, of Beckley, formerly of Michigan, went home to Heaven on August 12, 2006, after a long illness.
He was born November 23, 1928, a son of the late Jim and Celia Davis of Kentucky.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Fairy and Glesson; and a brother, Sanal.
He was retired from General Motors of Michigan; during his retirement he was the owner of Uncle Andy’s Diner at Glen Daniels, and was a Korean War Veteran.
He is survived by his sister, Hester Hall of Barrett; a brother, Marsum Davis of Tennessee; along with several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, with Rev. Henry Harvey officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens, with military graveside rites by VFW Post 5578, Madison, WV.
Friends may call one hour before service at the funeral home.

Junior Lindberg ‘Lindy’ Ganoe


ROANOKE, Va. — Junior Lindberg “Lindy” Ganoe, 75, of Roanoke, Va., passed away Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006.
Military graveside services and burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Sunrise Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Rich Creek, Va. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of graveside services Tuesday at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown.

Roy Griffith


PRUDENCE — Roy Griffith, 56, of Prudence, passed away Saturday, August 12, 2006, at C.A.M.C. Memorial Hospital.
Born July 11, 1950, at Montgomery, the son of the late Lee Elmore and Roxie Griffith.
Survivors include seven sisters, Shirley Garrison of Beckley, Jerri Palmer of Sanger, Nancy Pachuta of Beckley, Garnett Burns of Minden, Diane Beaver of Oak Hill, Terry Adkins of Mount Hope, and Debbie Martin of Oak Hill; five brothers, Jimmy Burns of Chicago, Ill., Robert Burns of Hopewell, Va., Gregory Griffith of Mt. Airy, N.C., Otha Griffith of Prudence, and Timmy Griffith of Prudence; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Ronald Sears officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from noon until time of the service.

Betty Lou Hipsley Hogan


OAK HILL — Betty Lou Hipsley Hogan, 54, of Oak Hill, formerly of Welch, died Friday evening, August 11, 2006, in the Fayette Nursing and Rehab Center in Fayetteville.
Born on July 23, 1952, in Welch, she was a daughter of the late Joe Palmer and Hazel Miller Green.
She was employed as an instructor with MSHA in Beckley. She was a member of the Page Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Hipsley.
Survivors include her son, Roland Peckham and his wife Mary Markivich of Cincinnati, OH; her daughter, Sara Hogan of Oak Hill; brother, Steve Hipsley and wife Carol of Rock Hill, SC; sister, Nancy Sue Dalton and husband A.W. of Dugspur, Va.; several nieces and nephews; additional family members, Rick Hogan and his wife Jerri-Lynn and their daughter Ashley of Oak Hill, Rodney Hogan and wife Cindy and their children Jordan and Lindsey of Summersville; and her dog, Ras-cal.
Funeral Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 15, 2006, from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton, with Reverend Delmas E. Wolfe officiating. Entombment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum on the Courthouse Road in Princeton.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Benny Michael Justice


OCEANA — Benny Michael Justice departed this life Saturday, August 12, 2006, at the age of 55 years, three months, and 14 days, at his residence, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born April 29, 1951, at Iaeger, he was the son of Drewey Justice and the late Marie Toler Justice.
Benny was self-employed as owner and operator of Justice Heating and Cooling for 25 years, of Pentecostal faith, and a member of Hanover House of Faith.
Benny was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was the owner of a very special dog, named Lucy.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie Toler Justice; and a sister, Christina Justice Blankenship.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 33 years, Hattie Collins Justice of Oceana; four sons, Korey Cline Justice of Oceana, Shawn S. Cline of Welch, Joey Justice and his wife Heather of Hendersonville, NC, and Jeremy Justice of Lynco; three brothers, James Justice and his wife Ernestine, Kennis Justice and his wife Zelda, and Freddie Justice, all of Justice; four sisters, Joyce Justice Browning and her husband Barry of Wharncliffe, Darlene Justice Toler and her husband Mike of Huntington, Sereta Justice of Justice, and Karen Justice Hall and her husband Michael of Justice; four grandchildren, Brandon Justice of Bolt, Brooklyn Justice of Coal Mountain, Benjamin “Mikey” Justice of TN, and Joseph Justice of Hendersonville, NC; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
A celebration of Benny’s life will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hanover House of Faith, with Rev. Larry Lester and Rev. Steve Brockwell officiating. Burial will follow in Vance Family Cemetery at Justice.
Casketbearers will be Anthony Walker, Mack Perry, Michael Hall, Allen Justice, Aaron Lester, and Pete Crosby.
Honorary casketbearers will be Clayton Meade, Leonard Cresong, Stewart Justice, Kennis Justice, Freddie Justice and James Justice.

DETROIT, Mich. — Deacon Ronald Allen Moore, of Detroit, Michigan, formerly of Beckley, passed on August 9, 2006, in the comforts of his home after a lengthy illness. He was 62 years of age.

Moore; Sons — Tracey Deskins of Beckley, W.Va., Randolph Coles of New York, and Ira Savage of Detroit, Michigan; Daughters — Vanessa Deskins of Beckley, W.Va., Wilese Stanley of Collinsville, Illinois, and Kathy Bullock of Detroit, Michigan; Grandchildren – Randolph Coles, Jr., Wilese Thomas, and Kharmein Savage; Brothers — Robert S. and Rev. Thomas V. Moore of Beckley, W.Va.; Sisters — Priscilla Ann of Beckley, W.Va., and Lucille (Cookie) Jones of Miami, Florida; and a host of relatives and friends.

Sally Eva Mullins


Sally Eva Mullins, 82, of Rainelle, passed away Friday, Aug. 11, 2006, at her home following a long illness.
Born on Oct. 8, 1923, on Big Sewell Mountain, she was the daughter of the late Mark Richard and Lula Jane Sims Crookshanks.
Mrs. Mullins was a homemaker and a member of the Big Sewell Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by three brothers, Samuel, Edgar and William Tip Crookshanks; and two sisters, Icie Sanford and Nellie Crookshanks.
Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Mullins of Rainelle; her brother, Ira David Crookshanks of Rainelle; two sisters, Kathryn Amanda Barnette of Charleston and Thelma B. Giboney of South Charleston; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Smathers Funeral Chapel with Pastor Kermit Hunter Jr. and the Rev. Larry Sovine officiating. Burial will follow in the Sims Cemetery at Rainelle.

Leonard Oliver ‘Pee Wee’ Settle


SCARBRO — Leonard Oliver “Pee Wee” Settle, 81, of Scarbro, Rt. 1, passed away Friday, August 11, 2006, at the Fayetteville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Fayetteville.
Born June 27, 1925, at Westerly, he was the son of the late Oliver and Kanzie Aliff Settle.
Leonard was a retired coal miner. He was also a member of the Mossy Living Word Church, was a U.S. Navy veteran, and was a member of the UMWA District 17.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Emil Lee and Bruce Settle; two sisters, Lavella Rinehart and Inez Poston; and a brother, Eldridge Elgin.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Evans Settle of Scarbro, Rt. 1; five sons, Dallas Settle and wife Becky of Mossy, Daniel Settle and wife Jan of Oak Hill, Jimmy Settle of Mossy, Johnny Settle and wife Terri of Oak Hill, and Tommy Settle and wife Neva of Mossy; four daughters, Velva Walker and husband Hal of Louisville, Ky., Dreama Arrington of Oak Hill, Rose Wriston and husband William of Mossy, and Debbie Settle and husband Bill of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three sisters, Catherine Wriston of Oak Hill, Thelma Stover and Naomi Stover, both of Mossy; special nephew, Dwight Rinehart of Mossy; special friends, Aaron Davidson and Paul Basham; 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Mossy Living Word Church, with the Rev. Paul Basham officiating. Burial will follow in the Rinehart Cemetery at Mossy.

Cleo Virginia Suvie


HINTON — Cleo Virginia Suvie, 88, of Hinton, died Thursday, August 10, 2006, at Summers Nursing & Rehabilitation at Hilldale, following a long illness.
Born July 21, 1917, at Pipestem, she was the daughter of the late Joe Allen and Mary Bowles Hopkins.
Ms. Suvie was a seamstress, and was a resident of Summers County for most of her life. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Hinton. She served as Eucharist Minister at the church for many years and was a member of the Women of St. Patrick.
Survivors include nieces, Colleen Minton of Jumping Branch, Dorothy Keaton of Flint, Michigan, Mildred Keaton of Jumping Branch, Betty Maddy Keaton of Hinton, Glenna Keaton of Princeton, Mary Keaton of Stout Mills, Nevada, Betty L. Keaton of Jumping Branch, Freda Hamby of Flint, Michigan, and Mary Lambert of Flint, Mich. Nephews, Charles A. Keaton of Princeton, Pat Keaton of Jumping Branch, Frank Hopkins of Clifton Forge, Virginia, and Jimmy Keaton of Maryland. Special friend, Pauline Meadows of Jumping Branch.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, August 14, 2006, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Hinton with Father Arthur Bufogle as celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in the Rocky Mount Church Cemetery at Pipestem.

Peggy Jean Swann


JOSEPHINE — Peggy Jean Swann, 72, of Josephine, died Sunday, August 13, 2006, at the Heartland of Beckley Nursing Home, following a long illness.
Born at Sullivan on March 11, 1934, she was the daughter of the late E.H. and Maude Wright Puckett.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Jesus at Lego.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Swann; a son, Larry Bowman; a sister, Helen Marie Ewing; and a brother, Thomas Lee Puckett.
Survivors include her children, Patricia Bowman of Danville, Va., and Bruce Bowman of Stuart, Va.; brothers, David Eugene Puckett of Huntington and Danny Puckett of Mt. Hope; sisters, Mildred Woolwine of Midway, Katheryn Moomaw of Besoco, and Margaret Ellen Wilson of Pax; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a niece, Brenda Hix; and grandniece, Desiree Moomaw.
Graveside rites and burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Skaggs Cemetery at Shady Spring, with Pastor Ray Stewart and Pastor Butch White officiating.
There will be no visitation.
Family members will serve as pallbearers.
