James Horace D. Bolen



James Horace D. Bolen, born July 5, 1934, in Besoco, left this world to join his beloved wife Lola Faye Holshouser Bolen in his heavenly home on Tuesday, July 25, 2006. He died of lung cancer after a short illness.

Horace was a member of the Protestant faith. He was a member of the United States Army. Horace left West Virginia in 1958 and lived in Illinois for over 20 years where he was a member of the Teamsters Local Union 710. He then moved to Coal City, where he was a member of the Coal City Volunteer Fire Department. He then lived with his daughter in Grayson, Ky., and then in Sevierville, Tenn.

He is survived by his daughter, Anita Noe of Sevierville; a granddaughter, Cassandra “Cassie” Havenstreit, and a grandson, Eric Noe, both of Lexington, Ky.; two sisters, Notie Walker and Rainell Smith and husband, Steve, all of Shady Spring; sisters-law, Joanna Bolen of Kevil, Ky., Helen Bolen of Spring Hill, Fla., and Harvalea Cadle and Gina Holshouser, both of Sevierville; brother-in-law, Arty Bryce Holshouser and wife, Penny, of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lola Faye Holshouser Bolen; his mother and father, James Hub and Virgie (Garretson) Bolen; two brothers, Okey and Clarence Bolen; a sister, Susan Gayhart; and brothers-in-law, Sherman Walker, Mark Holshouser, Kenneth Cadle and O.V. Gayhart.

Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Larken C. Calhoun officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Members of the Coal City Volunteer Fire Department will serve as pallbearers.

UNION — William Roscoe Caldwell, 81, passed away Monday night, July 24, 2006, at White Sulphur Springs Center following a short illness.

Born May 11, 1925, at Waiteville, he was the son of the late William Robert and Bertha Mae Bostic Caldwell.

Mr. Caldwell was a timberman and affiliated with the Baptist church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby Gray Thompson Caldwell; a daughter, Donna Sue Caldwell; two brothers, Virgil and Marshall Caldwell; and four sisters, Geraldine Dunbar, Leona Dunbar, Hazel Thompson and Eula Brown.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Spangler Caldwell; two daughters, Nancy Cary of Ronceverte and Donna Hedrick and her husband, Rusty, of Sinks Grove; a son, Allen Caldwell of Union; a sister, Cordelia Dunbar of Union; eight grandchildren, Melissa King, Pamela Ramsey, Crystal and Timothy Weikle, Jennifer Cary, Julie Garst, and Audrey and Shannon Hedrick; nine great-grandchildren, Kyle and Kenneth King Jr., Derek, Evan, Zachary and Hannah Grace Ramsey, Lorriana Weikle, and A.J. and Ally Austin.

MEADOW BRIDGE — Violet Rosetta Ennis, 75, of Old Harrah Road, passed away Monday evening, July 24, 2006, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born Oct. 27, 1930, at Meade, she was the daughter of the late Leland and Irene Bailey Vandall.

Mrs. Ennis was a wife, mother, grandmother and was often a caregiver for the elderly. She was of the Holiness faith.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Darrell Ennis; two brothers, Junior and Raymond Vandall; a sister, Vivian Vandall; a grandson, David Ennis II; and a great-grandson, Cody Ennis.

ALDERSON — Paul Edward Hall, 72, formerly of Auxier, Ky., and Cleveland, Ohio, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at his home in Alderson following a short illness.

Born Jan. 30, 1934, in Auxier, Ky., he was the son of the late Jack and Sally Wells Hall. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Hall, and a sister, Jean Yerich.

Mr. Hall was a retired foreman from Midwest Materials, Perry, Ohio. He was also a foreman for Avery International, Painesville, Ohio, for many years. He was a 1954 graduate of Oil Springs High School, Oil Springs, Ky., and was a U.S. Army veteran. Mr. Hall was a member of Griffith Creek Baptist Church, Alderson, and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Betty Lou Cordial Hall; four children, Gregory Lee Hall and his wife, Saundra, of London, Ky., Sally Mae Boucher and her husband, Joel, of Alderson, Brenda Hall Lilly and her husband, John, of Beckley and Paul Edward Hall II of Alderson; a brother, Douglas Hall and his wife, Laura, of Paintsville, Ky.; a sister, Mabel Durachinsky of Solon, Ohio; five grandchildren, Stacey Ann Hall of London, Ky., Stephanie Marie Dickenson and her husband, John, of Alderson, Brian Michael Boucher of Alderson, Jack Gregory Hall of London, Ky., and Zachary Austin Lilly of Beckley; a great-granddaughter, Alexis Faith Dickenson of Alderson; and many nieces and nephews.

LITTLE RIVER, S.C. — Terrie Stanley Lively, 48, passed away peacefully, after a courage-ous battle with ovarian cancer on Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at her home in Little River surrounded by her loving family.

She was a graduate of Dunbar High School and received her associate degree from the University of Charleston, and was a member of First Church United Methodist of Dunbar.

She was formerly of Beckley and Dunbar. Terri was a real estate paralegal for Davis Law Firm in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Terrie was a very devoted wife and loving mother. She will always be remembered for the love that she had for her family, bright and warm smile and her wonderful sense of humor.

Terrie was preceded in death by her father, Miles C. Stanley.

She is survived by her husband, Alan; two sons, Justin and Alex; her mother, Romaleda Stanley of Dunbar; two sisters, Pennie Ritenour and her husband, Bob, of St. Albans and Brenda Elliott and her husband, Stan, of Ripley; father and mother-in-law, Les and Aileen Lively of Beckley; two nieces, Hollie Shephard and April Shriner; and two nephews, Michael Elliott and Lee Metz.

A celebration of Terrie’s life will be 3 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at Bartlett Burdette Cox Funeral Home, Charleston, with Rev. Joel Harpold officiating.

HERNDON — Jackie L. Lusk, 70, was called home to be with our Lord on Tuesday, July 25, 2006, following a long illness.

Born June 4, 1936, at Lusk Settlement, he was the son of the late Walter and Polly England Lusk.

Mr. Lusk attended Garwood Church of God, was a member of the UMWA and Local Union 9781. He was a disabled coal miner with 20 years of service. He loved attending church, hunting, fishing and bluegrass music. He was a lifelong resident of the Lusk Settlement.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Arlee, Corbet and Monterville Lusk; and two sisters, Agnes Whitt and Elsie Gent.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 52 years, Juanita Mitchem Lusk; a son, Larry Lusk and his wife, Vickie, of Lusk Settlement; a daughter, Donna Darnell and her husband, Scott, of Ripplemead, Va.; two granddaughters, Nicole Reed and Aloria Proffitt, both of Ripplemead; two brothers, Troy Lusk and his wife, Lillian, of Alpoca and Edgar Lusk and his wife, Mary, of Basin; three sisters, Bernice Lusk of Lusk Settlement, Eula McKinney of New Richmond and Patty Sisk and her husband, Will, of Jonben; and many well-loved nieces and nephews.

LEWISBURG — Ms. Esther L. Matheny, 72, passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2006, in Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, after a long illness.

Born Nov. 24, 1933, in Lewisburg, she was the daughter of the late Wallace R. and Thelma Jenkins Matheny.

Ms. Matheny was a life-long resident of Lewisburg, member of Lewisburg United Methodist Church, 48-year member of the Lewisburg chapter of the Eastern Star, Greenbrier County CEOS, 4-H All Stars, Democratic Women and was a self-employed care taker and homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Robert H. Matheny.

Survivors include a brother, James “Butch” Matheny of Lewisburg; a niece, Amy M. Churilla and husband, Jeff, of Columbia, Md.; a nephew, Reid Matheny and wife, Theresa, of Bethesda, Md.; two grandnieces, Abby and Reese Churilla of Columbia, Md.; and a very special friend, Jo Ann Yates of Lewisburg.

Ms. Matheny has been cremated at her request and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Miller had been a life-long resident of Lewisburg, was a machine operator for Hercules and was an Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ruby Hale.

She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Shrewsbury; daughter, Hazel Booth; grandson, Bryan Shrewsbury; and daughter-in-law, Barbara Shrewsbury.

Karen was a loving mother and grandmother. She retired with 25 years of service from Verizon in Charleston.

Elizabeth Sue Thompson, 79, of Beckley, was dead on arrival at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley on Tuesday, July 25, 2006.

Born at Thurmond on July 6, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Walter J. and Algie Huffman Thompson.

Miss Thompson was a retired employee of G.C. Murphy Co. and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors are sisters, Gertrude Epperly of Beaver, Do-rothy Hunt and husband, Eddie, of Beckley, Phyllis White and husband, William, of Beckley and Patricia Scott of Hampton, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

STOUGHTON, Mass. — Josette B. Traynham, 57, formerly of Whipple, died Sunday, July 23, 2006, at Good Samaritan Hospital, Stough-ton, following a brief illness.

Born Aug. 19, 1948, at Harvey, she was the daughter of the late William Traynham and Beatrice Leftwich Traynham.

Miss Traynham worked at the Belmont Street School where she attained her degree as a para-professional, and was a graduate of Collins High School. She was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her brother, William “Willie” Traynham Jr.; and a niece, Rene Traynham.

Survivors include her fiancé, Rob-ert Rizzie; sons, Senior Chief, U.S. Navy, Rob-ert Lennell (Wendy) Traynham of Annapolis, Md., Kenneth Lemearle (Deanna) Traynham of Whipple and Petty Officer 2nd Class, U.S. Navy, Anthony Lamont (Amie) Traynham of Norfolk, Va.; brothers and sister, Richard (Marie) Traynham of New Rochelle, N.Y., Robert (Marilyn) Traynham, Eugene (Janice) Traynham and Kenneth (Emma) Traynham, all of Boston, Mass., and John “J.B.” Traynham (Brenda) of Fayetteville; a very special devoted sister, Joyce V. Rondey L. Webb Sr.



Rondey Leon Webb Sr., 86, of Beckley, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006, after a long illness.

Born in Allisonia, Va., on Nov. 12, 1919, he was the son of the late Bessie Jane Montgom-ery Webb and Kennard McKinley Webb.

Mr. Webb is survived by his wife, Maxene Taylor Webb; a son, Rondey Leon Webb Jr. and his wife, Rise Snead Webb; and a daughter, Nancy Jane Payne and her husband, Philip Payne. He was also the father of the late Julia Nell Webb. Mr. Webb is also survived by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Webb was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. Serving as first lieutenant and B-26 bomber pilot, he flew 64 combat missions in Italy and North Africa, and was base communications officer.

Following the war, he graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he received a B.S. degree in horticulture.

Along with his wife and son, Webb was co-owner of Webb’s Florist and Greenhouses, established 58 years ago.

Mr. Webb became president of many organizations, including the Beckley Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees), the Raleigh County TB and Health Organization, the Raleigh County Red Cross, the Lions Club, the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce, the Raleigh County Extension Committee, the Southern West Virginia Regional Health Association (OH-9), the Thomas Walker Foundation (for many years), the Raleigh County Board of Education (president eight of his 14 years on the board) and the Tri-State Growers Association of Virginia, West Virginia and Ohio.

Mr. Webb was a member of the Raleigh County Court (now the Raleigh County Commission), the 1956 Raleigh County Democratic chairman, vice president of the state Junior Chamber of Commerce, and vice president of the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital Advisory Board. He was an original director of Gulf National Bank and past director of United National Bank. He was a member of Beckley Presbyterian Church, the Beckley Rotary Club and Black Knight Country Club.

Among his contributions to the community were obtaining finances for the initial development of the Stephens Lake project, helping the YMCA obtain its first space in Beckley (the Memorial Building), promoting the addition of fluoride to the Raleigh County water supply, initiating the development of the sewer system for the Crab Orchard-MacArthur Public Service District, helping secure the government grant for the OH-9 Regional Health Council and promoting the gift of more than $1 million in seed money from the Thomas Walker Foundation for the establishment of the Beckley Area Foundation. In 1997 he was designated a Paul Harris Fellow by the Beckley Rotary Club.

Visitation will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 28, at Melton Mortuary, Beckley. Memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Adrian Pratt officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Thelma Mildred Kincaid Wilburn



KILSYTH — Thelma Mildred Kincaid Wilburn, 94, of Kilsyth, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 23, 2006, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a short illness.

Born at Abraham on Dec. 3, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Estaline Vance Kincaid.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, Arthur Wilburn; a son, Robert L. Wilburn; three brothers, Mac, Pete and Charlie Kincaid; and sisters, Nellie Smith, Lizzy Stettler, Josie Kincaid, Rosetta Jenkins, Nannie Kincaid and Ocie Bennett.

Those left to cherish her memory are three sons, Harold Wilburn and wife, Yvette, of Beaver, Charles Wilburn and wife, Maleta, of Beaver and Gerald Wilburn and wife, Kim, of Mount Hope; four daughters, Shirley Coutts and husband, Dick, of Gettysburg, Pa., Mable Hardina and husband, Ben, of Dunnellon, Fla., Sandra Mullens and husband, Benny, of Christiansburg, Va., and Janice Smith of Mount Hope; a daughter-in-law, Carol Wilburn of White Oak; 21 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend special thanks to her caregiver Linda Suttle who cared for her for the past seven years.

Service was 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 26, at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Mike King officiating. Burial followed in Calfee Cemetery, Mount Tabor.
