Macel Mae Collins Beam



RUPERT — Macel Mae Collins Beam, 86, died Tuesday morning, July 15, 2008, at Autumn Way Personal Care Home of Rupert, following a long illness.

Born Dec. 14, 1921, at Marfrance, she was the daughter of the late Abraham Lincoln and Maggie Spinks Collins.

Mrs. Beam had owned and operated a restaurant, and was a former caregiver.

She was also a member of Amwell Baptist Church of Rupert.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lester Beam, in 1964; a sister, Rose Beam; and four brothers, Jack, Ray, Marion and Buster (Al) Collins.

Survivors include a sister, Muriel Tharp Cook of Rupert; a brother, Clyde Collins and wife, Dora, of Rupert; many nieces and nephews, along with many loving and caring friends.

Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. today at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville, with Mr. Kenneth Brackman officiating and April Vestal singing. Burial will follow.

Friends may call 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. today at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Autumn Way Personal Care Home and Greenbrier Valley Hospice for their generous love and care of “Mace.”

Joseph A. Black



PETERSTOWN — Joseph A. Black, 69, of Peterstown, formerly of Lewisburg, died July 16, 2008, at Peterstown after an extended illness.

Born April 7, 1939, in Ronceverte, he was the son of the late Hollister A. Black and Myrtle Witt Black.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Rae Alexander.

Joe served in the U.S. Army and the National Guard. He worked as a night clerk in the hotel industry and as a stockbroker.

Graveside service will be conducted at the Wallace Memorial Cemetery in Clintonville on Saturday at 11 a.m. by Pastor Larry Walker.

There will be no evening visitation.

In lieu of flowers, Joe’s request was to have donations of sympathy made to the Sam Black United Methodist Church, which his great-grandfather, Samuel Black, founded. Send donations in care of Novella Perkins, HC 71 Box 110, Smoot, WV 24977.

Darleen F. Brown, 62, of Daniels, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at her residence.

BOCA RATON, Fla. —Mark Allen Burgess, 47, of Boca Raton, Fla., passed away at his home. He was a chef in Palm Beach, Florida.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m., Saturday at the Cook Cemetery, Cyclone, W.Va.

Mark was cremated according to his wishes.

Georgia Marie Harden



Georgia Marie Harden, 83, of Beckley, W.Va., died Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at the Teays Valley Center, following a long illness.

Born June 9, 1925, in Pemberton, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late George W. and Blanche Musser Fortner.

Mrs. Harden was a loving, caring, devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Her love of music was evident throughout her life. She began singing, yodeling and playing the autoharp when she was about 10 years old, and continued by bringing joy to others, especially the residents of Teays Valley Center.

She was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and shared her faith with as many as possible throughout the years.

She was the oldest surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Jack; and by three sisters and five brothers.

Surviving are two brothers, Billy Fortner of Hudson, Fla., and Douglas Fortner of Grandview, W.Va.; a sister, Lucille Ball of Beckley, W.Va.; three sons, Jack F. Harden and his wife, Bonnie, of Charleston, W.Va., Jerry D. Harden and his wife, Lilian, of Boise, Idaho, and Edward L. Harden and his wife, Mary, of Lancaster, Ohio; two daughters, Nancy C. Hardcastle of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Brenda S. Haydon and her husband, Kenneth, of Nitro, W.Va.; eight grandchildren, Jack, Robert, Edward and Christopher Harden, James, Kenneth, and Jason Haydon, and Lauren Hardcastle; five great-grandchildren; a special niece, Sandra Pittman; and other nieces, nephews and cousins, who are too numerous to name.

She will be sadly missed by all her family and friends.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, with John Poindexter officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Prosperity.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Carol Faye Lester



ALPOCA — Carol Faye Lester, 64, of Alpoca, died Sunday, July 13, 2008, in a Beckley Hospital, following a long illness.

Born May 21, 1944, at Mullens, she was the daughter of the late Tyree Q. Lester, Sr. and Elsie Mae Spencer Lester.

Mrs. Lester was a homemaker. She was a former head housekeeper for Martin Marietta in Orlando, Fla. She was greatly loved by all and will be missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceeded in death by three brothers, William Owen Lester, Sr., Timothy Lester and Shorty Lester.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Gale Lester; four daughters, Teresa Warren of Cookeville, Tenn., Tammy Giles from Northeast, Md., Cindy Vazquez of Oceana, and Carol Sturgis of Beaver, Ohio; a son, Clay Wagner of Perryville, Ohio; six sisters, Cosby Sue Fessler of Delaware, Linda Cline of Oceana, Drema Williams of Md., Juanita Judy of Md., Jeannie Lester of Oceana, and Reannie Lester of Knoxville, Tenn.; five brothers, Dennis Michael Lester of Kansas, Dwight Abraham Lester of Md., Richard Eugene of S.C., Henry Lester of Oceana, and Lawrence Dwayne Lester of Md.; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and ne-phews.

Graveside service and inurnment will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Hickory Ridge Cemetery, Bud Mountain, with the Rev. Carl Underwood officiating. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery.

LEWISBURG — Catherine A. Relihan, 77, of Lewisburg, passed away July 12, 2008, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, following a short illness.

According to her wishes, her body was donated to West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicines through the Human Gift Registry.

A Memorial Mass will be scheduled.
