BRIGHTON, Mich. — Emanuel Amato, 95, formerly of Beckley, died Sunday, July 13, 2008.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 p.m. today at St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Nina Marie Ballard
FAYETTEVILLE — Nina Marie Sizemore (Wiseman) Ballard, age 82, of Fayetteville, passed away July 15, from this life into a better one, at home, following a year-long struggle with cancer.
Born March 25, 1926, at Clay, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Erving and Daisy Sizemore. Her only sister, Peggy Pell of Wadsworth, Ohio, preceded her in death.
Her life touched many in the Oak Hill area. She taught Math, Science and Home Economics at Collins Middle School for almost 40 years. She began her career teaching in a one-room school in Monongalia County, and had many adventures to share with her students.
Nina was a long time member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church, where she served the Lord for 38 years as church organist.
Though her family was small, they loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Ballard, of Fayetteville.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Deborah Bennett and spouse, Dwight (Rick), of Shady Spring; grandson, Patrick Bennett and wife, Maria, of Fayetteville; and granddaughter, Sarah Pojanowski and husband, Jeff, of Bethesda, Md.
Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Oak Hill United Methodist Church, 250 Main Street, Oak Hill, W.Va. Funeral service will follow at 6 p.m., and sunset graveside burial service at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Charles Miller officiating.
The family would like to extend deepest appreciation to Nina’s personal caregivers, Kitty Waugh, Nancy Cole and Bertha (Joni) Scott, who gave Nina love in her last days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802-1472.
Pallbearers will be Patrick Bennett, Dwight (Rick) Bennett, Jeff Pojanowski, Matthew Harper, Josh Reeve and Brent Lewis.

Jason Allen Hall, 27, died Sunday, July 13, 2008, at Princeton Community Hospital following a sudden illness.
Born Nov. 10, 1980, in Mullens, he was the son of the late Ernest Jack Hall and Joyce Ann Lester Morgan of New Richmond.
In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Crystal Brown Hall; maternal grandparents, Wanda Sue and Ord Herman Lester; paternal grandparents, Arthur Allen and Delphia Marie Hall; and maternal uncle, Eddie Lee Lester. He was also preceded in death by his stepgrandfather, Ronald Odell Morgan.
Those left to cherish his memory include his mother and stepfather, Joyce and Larry Morgan of New Richmond; a sister, Kayla White and her husband, Shane, of Mullens; stepbrother, Jamie Morgan and his wife, Shelley, of Herndon; stepsister, Christie Simmons and her husband, Chad, of Herndon; stepgrandmother, Opal Morgan of New Richmond; and a host of friends and family.
Friends may call after 7 p.m. today at the Church of God in Jesus Name in Mullensville.
Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Church of God in Jesus Name in Mullensville, with the Rev. Rick Browning officiating. He will be buried beside his father at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Vickie Howerton
Vickie Howerton, 54, of Midway, died Saturday, July 12, 2008, in a motorcycle accident.
Born Feb. 27, 1954, in Nolan, W.Va., she lived most of her adult life in Midway. She was a member of Jesus Only Church of Lego, W.Va.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Angela White; her father, Bill White; and a brother, Stevie White, all of Midway.
She was the loving mother of Michele Farruggia and her husband, Dewayne, of Sophia, Joey Howerton and his wife, Marissa, of Oak Hill, and Myra Rose and her husband, Gary, of Crab Orchard.
She was a wonderful grandmother to Rachel, Natalie and Angel Farruggia, Stacey, Samantha and Michael Howerton, Brian Dickens, Olivia, Andrew and Elijah Rose. She was a devoted sister to Butch White and his wife, Judy, of Sophia, Billy White and his wife, Carol, of Shady Spring, Candy Meadows and her husband, Albert, Patsy Wood and her husband, Tim, of Midway, Tammy Nelson and her husband, Ronnie, of Crab Orchard, Susie Wood and her husband, Buford, of Coal City, and Don White and his wife, Patty, of Jonben.
She was loved by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. “Miss Vickie” loved going to church, spending time with her family and riding her motorcycle. She was patient and kind, always understanding, loving, devoted and never met a stranger. She was a little gray-haired spitfire who touched the lives of many. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. The world is a darker place without her. She will be mourned by all.
Graveside rites and burial will be noon Friday at the Hotcoal Cemetery in Sophia, with the Rev. Eddie Tucker officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, 1901 S. Kanawha St., Beckley.
Pallbearers will be Barry White, Anthony Meadows, Aaron Wood, Chip Nelson, Jerry Wayne Taylor and Johnny Howerton.
A dinner will be served for family and friends immediately following the graveside rites at the Sophia House of Prayer.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Donald “Dusty” Huffman, 83, died Sunday, July 13, 2008.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Nutter officiating. Interment will follow in Mapledale Cemetery, Route 92, White Sulphur Springs.

Brenda Ann LeMaster McGarity
MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Brenda Ann LeMaster McGarity, 58, passed away Monday, July 14, 2008, at Blount County Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born April 21, 1950, at Oak Hill, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Annadeane Clendenen LeMaster.
Brenda was a member of the Alcoa-Maryville Church of God, where she had served as the children’s pastor for the past three years. Prior to moving to Maryville, she served as children’s pastor for 31 years at various Church of God’s in both Tennessee and Alabama.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, the Rev. George Hubert McGarity; her son, the Rev. Kristen McGarity and wife, Michelle, of Dillion, S.C.; her daughter, Beth Ann Mills and husband, Kevin, of Cleveland, Tenn.; grandson, Coley McGarity of Dillion, S.C.; mother-in-law, Jean McGarity of Maryville, Tenn.; sister, Jeanne Evans of Oak Hill; nephews, Jonathan Evans of Lake Mary, Fla., and Jereme Evans and wife, Leah, of Beckley; great-niece, Ashton Evans and great- nephew, Ty Evans, both of Beckley.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. today at the Alcoa-Maryville Church of God in Maryville, Tenn., with Dr. Michael Chapman and the Rev. R.O. Eubanks officiating.
Service in West Virginia will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill. Friends may call at High Lawn Funeral Home 1 p.m. until time of the service Thursday. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

WHITMAN — Carmelo Pansera, 61, departed this life early Tuesday morning, July 15, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington.

Lonnie Richard Shires Jr.
RUPERT — Lonnie Richard Shires Jr., 81, of Rupert, formerly of Alderson, died Sunday, July 13, 2008, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roa-noke, Va., following a short illness.
Born Dec. 16, 1926, at Alderson, he was the son of the late Lonnie Richard Shires Sr. and Ada Mae Falls Shires. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jackie Shires; and three sisters, Frances Lee Phillips, Lucille Trump and Nellie Honaker.
Mr. Shires was a retired records technician, retiring from the West Virginia Department of Highways, Lewisburg, W.Va., after 30 years of service. He also taught school on Flat Mountain in Alderson for two years. He was a 1946 graduate of Alderson High School and attended Marshall University, Huntington, where he received a teaching certificate. Mr. Shires was a member of the Big Clear Creek Baptist Church, Rupert, where he was a member of the Men’s and Dorcas Sunday School Class, the Men’s Fellowship, and was a former Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the Alderson Masonic Lodge No. 70 AF and AM, and was a former member of the Smoot Ruritan Club. Mr. Shires coached Little League Baseball in Alderson and was associated with the Alderson Little League for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Drema Hellems Shires of Rupert; a daughter, Barbara J. Bowles and her husband, Cliff, of Alderson; two sons, Rick Shires and his wife, Linda, of Organ Cave, and Artie Shires and his wife, Carmela, of Alderson; seven grandchildren, Chrissy Bowles and her husband, C.B., Keri Shires, Chad Sams and his wife, Christine, Stacy Shires, Bryan Shires, Brittany Shires and Haylee Shires; two step-children, Sandra Alderman and her husband, Mark, of Wytheville, Va., and Jeff Hellems and his wife, Amy, of Rupert; four step-grandchildren, Marcia Alderman, Mary Alderman, Jenny Hellems and Chelsea Hellems; a step-great grandson, Hunter Levi Alderman; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Rev. Ed Midcap, Pastor Ronald Cobb and the Rev. Glen Kuhn officiating. Burial will follow at the Alderson Cemetery, Alderson. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson.
Serving as pallbearers will be Rick Shires, Bryan Shires, Chad Sams, Doug Sams, Artie Shires and C.B. Bowles.

UNION — Mrs. Vera Crosier Thomas, 95, passed away Monday, July 14, 2008, at the Springfield Care Center following an extended illness.
She was born Dec. 9, 1912, at Union, the daughter of the late Dennis and Anise Wallace Crosier.
She was a member of the Greenville United Methodist Church, the Indian Creek Club and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William P. Thomas on Jan. 4, 1960; a son, Glen; a sister, Freda Baker; and a brother, Dennis Crosier Jr.
She is survived by five sons, Layman and wife, Laura, Ralph and wife, Gleda, and Bobby and wife, Mary, all of Greenville, W.Va., Billy and wife, Mary, of Princeton, and Herbert and wife, Nancy, of Union; a daughter, Betty Ruth Fleshman and husband, Sammy, of Union; a sister, Beatrice Smithson of Lindside; 19 grandchildren, numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.
Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home, Union, with the Rev. Hughlynn Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Hedding Cemetery, Lillydale.

William Merl Weaver
William Merl Weaver, 89, of Naoma, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center after a short illness.
Born on Feb. 19, 1919, at Marsh Fork, he was a son of the late Dexter and Alice Cole Weaver.
Before retiring, he worked at Armco Steel with 45 years of service in the Engineering Department as an engineer, rodsman and surveyor.
Besides his parents, an infant daughter, Sandra Weaver; two brothers, Lloyd Brown and Oather Brown; and two sisters, Monreda Meadows and Arlene Jenkins, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Kathleen Elkins Weaver; two sons, William Merl Weaver Jr. and wife, Geraldine, of Matthews, N.C., Phillip Duane Weaver and wife, Rebecca, of Lincolnton, N.C.; a daughter, Alice Kay Daniel and husband, Greg, of Naoma; a brother, James Brown of Fredericksburg, Va.; four grandchildren, Michael Weaver, Matthew Weaver and wife, Jaya, Ashleigh Daniel and Stephen Toney; a great-grandchild, Zebadiah Weaver; and several nieces and nephews.
Service will be 2 p.m. today at the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. Melissa White officiating. Burial will follow in the Pineview Cemetery, Orgas. Singing will be done by George and Rosemary Miller, with instrumental by Ashleigh Daniel.

Kim Dewayne Wells
CLEAR FORK — Kim Dewayne Wells, 46, of Clear Fork, passed away Sunday July 13, 2008, at the Beckley VA Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 26, 1962, in Man, West Virginia, a son of Norma Jean Keeney Wells and the late Charles Winford Wells.
Kim was a loving husband, father, son, brother and grandson who enjoyed playing the guitar, riding his four-wheeler and listening to music. Kim once said the desire of his heart was to play a song that would please God. Today, he is with his Heavenly Father fulfilling his wish. He was an auto body mechanic, coal truck driver, a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Persian Gulf, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans Wyoming-McDowell Chapter 56.
Those left behind to love and cherish his memory are his wife of four years, Melissa R. Conley-Wells; his mother, Norma Jean Wells and her companion, James “Ed” Dunn, of Clear Fork; four sons, Kim D. Wells Jr. and wife, Belinda, and Benjamin Keith Wells, all of Brenton, Stephen and Cory Wells of Taylorsville, N.C.; two brothers, Terry Wells and wife, Ruth, of Brier Creek, W.Va., and Michael Wells and wife, Barbara, of Lynco; two sisters, Bonita Bradford and husband, Frank, of Princeton, and Jackie Chambers and husband, Barry, of Lynco; two grandchildren, Brandi and Kayla Wells of Brenton; and a host of nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco with the Rev. Eddie B. Aliff, Jr. officiating. Kim will be laid to rest in the Cook & Keeney Cemetery on Huff Mountain. The Wyoming County Honor Guard will conduct Military Graveside Rites. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
