Herman E. ‘Monk’ Ball
SOUTH CHARLESTON — Herman E. “Monk” Ball, 73, formerly of Oak Hill, passed away Monday, June 29, 2009, at Thomas Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 6, 1935, at Bozoo, W.Va., the son of the late Allen Ball and Dana Brookman Ball.
Monk was a very jolly person, and all who came in contact with him, loved him.
Survivors include Wanda Ball of Oak Hill; a son, Steve Ball and wife, Kathy, of Oak Hill; daughter, Cindy Cannon of Beckley; brothers, Bill Ball and wife, Jackie, of Berea, Ohio, and Carl Ball of Bozoo, W.Va.; sisters, Betty Johnson and husband, Bill, of Chapmanville, W.Va., Shirley Young and husband, Bob, of Alum Creek, W.Va., Louise Ballard and husband, Curtis, of Lindside, W.Va., Mary Chemizak of Brunswick, Ohio, and Ethel Jennings of Millersburg, Ohio; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of Valley Center in South Charleston for their kindness and compassion shown to Monk over the last year and a half.
His remains rest at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill, where the funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Joe Cuthbertson officiating. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park with military rites conducted by the Oak Hill VFW Post 3110.
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until time of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Jack Gordon Cutlip
FENWICK — Jack Gordon Cutlip I, 77, of Fenwick, passed away Friday, June 26, 2009, in the Charleston Area Medical Center following a short illness.
Born on September 13, 1931, at Fenwick, he was the son of the late Zerk and Idra Carnifax Cutlip.
Jack worked as a metal worker before retiring and served in the United States Navy. He was associated with the Fenwick United Methodist Church, was an avid gardener and loved his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sons, Jack Mario Cutlip and infant son, Jack Cutlip II, and one sister, Jean Cowgar.
Survivors include four daughters, Vicky Lynn McNally, Cheryle Wynn Rodriguez and Mary Catherine Cosenza, all of New Jersey, and Marlene Diane Sanford of Leslie; two brothers, Richard Cutlip of Richwood and Rick Cutlip of Maryland; one sister, Billie Swartz of Pennsylvania; the mother of his children, Barbara A. Naia of New Jersey; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, at Smathers Funeral Chapel with Pastor Larry Russell officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville. Military honors will be provided by the Rainelle V.F.W. Post 4484.
Friends may call the same day, one hour before the service from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Joe Franco
MIDDLETOWN, Md. — Mr. Joe Franco, 71, of Middletown, left in peace from his home on June 28, 2009. He was the husband of Connie L. Franco, his wife of 40 years.
Born Jan. 9, 1938, in Duo, West Virginia, he was the son of the late William and Louetta Franco.
He attended school in Gauley Bridge, W.Va., and left school to mine coal. He joined the U.S. Army shortly thereafter, and retired in 1975. Joe was an avid history buff and civil war re-enactor, and as Brigadier General in the Army of Western Virginia held the 2nd Virginia Light Artillery Battery. He was a member of AMVETS Post 9, Middletown, the College Park Moose Lodge, DAV Chapter 5, and other organizations too numerous to list.
In addition to his loving wife, Joe is survived by his son, Antonio Franco and his wife Christina McCormick Franco; and many brothers, sisters, and other relatives.
Visitation will be held 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. Route 15 N., Frederick, Md., where funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday. Military honors will conclude the service in the Chapel Mausoleum. Floral tributes are welcome.

LEWISBURG — Mary L. “Sally” Goodall, 73, died Sunday, June 28, 2009, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, following a long illness.
Born Aug. 15, 1935, at Lewisburg, she was the daughter of the late Mike and Helen Hayes Landers.
Mrs. Goodall was a member of the Lewisburg United Methodist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. She was a homemaker, a wonderful cook, as anyone who knew her could attest. She enjoyed golfing, bowling, bingo, but, above all, caring for all of her family. She will be sadly missed by her family and the many friends that she welcomed into her life.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, John M. “Jackie” Goodall; three daughters, Jane Hughes and husband, Ronnie, of Ronceverte, Pam Hamrick and husband, Tig, of Ronceverte, Cindy Tucker and husband, Bobby, of Dunbar; sister, Susan L. Fox and husband, Dave, of Beckley; brother, Mike Landers and wife, Sarah, of Williamstown. Grandchildren, Jonathan Hamrick and wife, Susan, of Purcellville, Va., Susan McCoy and husband, Chad, of Ronceverte, Erin Hager of Ronceverte, Chris Hager and wife, Ginny, of Ronceverte; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special aunt, Susan Hayes, who has made her home with Jackie and Sally for the past nine years.
Service will be 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at the Memorial Chapel of McCraw Funeral Home with the Rev. Charlie McFarlin officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenbrier Memorial Gardens, Lewisburg.

MAXWELTON — Hallie Morrison Hollandsworth, 93, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2009, in the Greenbrier Manor Nursing Home, Fairlea, after a long illness.
Born Jan. 24, 1916, at Renick, she was the daughter of the late Byer and Sarah Florence Boggs Morrison.
Mrs. Hollandsworth had been a resident of Maxwelton for many years, member of the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, Droop Mountain, and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Elmer Morrison, Enoch Morrison, Harry Morrison, Ernest Morrison and Dixon Morrison; nine sisters, Ada McCoy, Clara Simmons, Cleo Reed, Ethel Holmes, Clara Clutter, Mag McMillion, Vossie Morrison, Flora Morrison and Minnie Morrison.
Survivors include three daughters, Betty Stutzman of Lake Panasoffkee, Fla., Patty Owens and husband, Archie, of Maxwelton and Ann Huskins of Maxwelton; a grandson, Jim Owens of Maxwelton; four sisters, Mary Lester of Renick, Jane Hull of Eagle Rock, Va., Bessie Copenhaver of Red Lion, Pa., and Lina Brannon of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and many nieces and nephews.

Jimmy ‘Haze’ David Lucas
Jimmy “Haze” David Lucas went to be with the LORD on Sunday, June 28, 2009, at Bowers Hospice House surrounded by family and loved ones.
Born July 2, 1941, in Dameron, W.Va., he was the son of the late Rosetta Cook Lucas and James Edward Lucas.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers: Goldie Bragg, Agnes Sizemore, French, Frank, and John Lucas.
Surviving sisters and brothers: Mary Kathleen Lucas, Debbie Freeze, Bill, and Ronnie Lucas.
Haze was a retired coal miner who cherished the older things in life. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend with a deep passion for his family and those he held dear. He provided strength and emotional shelter to those who knew and loved him dearly. His courage will never be forgotten. His love will always remain. His voice will be forever heard in the winds.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 43 years, Reba Honaker Lucas of Arnett, W.Va.; son Jimmy David Lucas Jr. of Morgantown, W.Va.; daughter, Rhonda Michelle and husband Doug Duryea of Navarre, Fla.; son, Stacy Ryan Lucas and wife Tatiana, and beloved grandson Leo Aleksander Jimmy Lucas of Charleston, W.Va.

HINES — Ulyss S. Phipps, 31, of Hines, died Friday afternoon, June 26, 2009, at Charleston Area Medical Center (General Division) at Charleston, following a motorcycle accident near Charmco.
Born June 13, 1978, at Fairlea, W.Va., he was the son of David W. Phipps and Julie A. Drennen Haught.
Ulyss worked construction for Target Drilling.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jenna Sue Shelton Phipps, in 2005, and a sister, Jessica Ellen Phipps, in 2002.
Survivors include his parents, David Phipps and Julie Haught; two sons, Bradley William and Jeyce Alec; a sister, Ashley A. Phipps; a brother, William D. Phipps; grandmother, Thelma Drennen; a niece, Cierra Phipps; and two nephews, Tucker Phipps and Dylan Snodgrass.

John R. Reed Jr.
HINTON — John R. Reed Jr., 34, of Hinton died peacefully in his sleep after a long and courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, June 28, 2009.
Born August 6, 1974, in Summers County, he is the son of Roger and Patty Ratliff Reed of Madams Creek.
John attended Martha’s Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a 1992 graduate of Hinton High School who played on the Bobcat Football Team and achieved recognition as AA Coalfield Conference Honorable Mention. A lifelong resident of Summers County, he attended Bluefield State College and was a former employee of Diversified Enterprises. John was a loving husband and father who was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Jack Ratliff, his paternal grandparents John and Evelyn Reed, maternal great-grandmother Goldie Bennett, paternal great-grandmother Ollie Goff, sister-in-law Jane Wiseman Reed and a special aunt Liz Beasley.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 15 years Erica Clinebell Reed and their son John Parker Reed both at home. One brother Greg Reed and wife Amy of Ballengee and one sister Pamela Reed Hartwell and husband Jonathan of Charlotte, NC., maternal grandmother Lola Ratliff of Madams Creek, two nieces Jaden and Abigail Reed and three nephews Sylar and Zachary Hartwell and Aidan Meadows.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlor Chapel with Pastors Melvin Wills and Ronald Cobb officiating. Burial will follow in the Lilly Crews Cemetery at Nimitz.

Doran Jefferson Stover, 79, of Workman’s Creek, died on Saturday, June 27, 2009, at McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, Va.
Born August 13, 1929, at Clear Creek, he was the son of the late Clina and Ina Toney Stover.
He was a retired farmer.
Mr. Stover served in the U.S. Army in the 101st Airborne Division and also the 6th Infantry Regiment. He was stationed in Berlin, Germany.
He enjoyed gardening and sharing stories with his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, a sister, Nannie Terry, and five brothers, Maben, Rondie, Ray, Jackie and Quincy, preceded him in death.
He is survived by a brother, Warren Stover and wife, Gladys; sisters-in-law, Elvis Stover, Josie Stover and Patricia Stover; many nieces and nephews and friends.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at the Workman’s Creek Methodist Church, with Rev. Jerry Tyree officiating. Burial will be at Workman’s Creek Cemetery at Workman’s Creek.

Evert Whitt
EATONTON, Ga. — Evert Whitt of Eatonton, Ga., formerly of Basin, passed from this life on Friday, June 26, 2009, at the Carl Vinson Veterans Medical Center in Dublin, Ga., following a long illness. He was 84 years of age.
Evert was born on April 25, 1925, to the late Henry Overton and Martha Jane Whitt of Basin.
He is survived by his wife, Gretsel Basham Whitt of Eatonton, Ga.; his son, Stanley Evert Whitt of Richmond, Va.; his daughter, Donna Kaye Viola of Eatonton, Ga.; two brothers, Bermon and Mason Whitt of Beckley; one sister, Arlene Whitt of Roanoke, Va. He had three other siblings now deceased, Arvil Whitt, Bernice McKinney and Marie Shrewsbury. Evert is survived by three grandchildren, Brandon Whitt, Barrett Elliott Miller and Danitra Lannette Hall; six great-grandchildren, Brandon Whitt, Johnny Whitt, Candice Brooke Hall, Courtney Ann Hall, Corey Alexander Hall and Nataleigh Gracie Rayne Miller.
Evert served during WWII as a guard in the military police. He was also a rifle sharpshooter and a gunner. He received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal for his accomplishments while in service. Evert was wounded and suffered the loss of his left leg while fighting for his country. He was a farmer for most of his remaining life. He resided on his farm in Basin with his wife.
A member of the Spruce Grove Baptist Church of Basin, Evert taught the adult Sunday school class for years. He was a member of the church quartet and proclaimed the gospel through song with his tenor voice. He later became a member of the Church of God of Mullens.
Evert and Gretsel moved to Eatonton to live with their daughter Donna and son-in-law Gary Viola and resided there until he became ill. He lived his remaining months in the Carl Vinson Veterans Center. A dearly loved man, he will be missed by his family and close friends.
Evert is being brought home this week for a private service and burial with full military honors. The Rev. David Trump will be officiating.
