Vergie Dick Ballengee



FRANKLIN, Ohio — Vergie Dick Ballengee, 95, formerly of Hinton, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at Franklin Ridge Nursing Home in Franklin following a long illness.

Born March 15, 1911, at Sandstone, she was a member of Upland Baptist Church and attended Community Christian Church. She worked at Camp Lightfoot, cared for the elderly in her home, and also worked at a boarding house and the Kitchen Restaurant in Hinton.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dewey Dick, in 1940; her second husband, Everette Ballengee, in 1977; a daughter, Gay Dick, in 1990; two brothers, Everett Clay and an unnamed infant brother; and four sisters, Irene Burdette, Maycle Dick, Frances Hicks and Violet Bragg.

Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Neuman of South Carolina and Leattras Pence of Trenton, Ohio; two sons, Hershel Dick of Powhatan, Va., and James Dick of Winchester, Va.; a sister, Bernice Richmond of North Carolina; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton.

Friends may call 1 p.m. until time of service Friday at the funeral parlors.

Delpha Taylor Chapman



Delpha Taylor Chapman, 88, of MacArthur, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2006, following a short illness.

Born April 6, 1918, in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Noah C. and Bonnie K. Farmer Taylor.

Mrs. Chapman worked in the housekeeping department of the old Beckley Hospital for 18 years and was of the Baptist faith.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Willie Woodrow Chapman; a daughter, Doreen Cook; a son, Ronald Lee Chapman; two sisters, Letha Snuffer and Nellie Wooten; two brothers, Wilson and Raymond Taylor; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Chapman.

Those left to cherish her memory are two sons, Jim Chapman and his wife, Maggie, of MacArthur and Willard Chapman of MacArthur; a son-in-law, Rony Cook of Beckley; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Chapman of Mullens; a sister-in-law, Ann Taylor of Daniels; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Service will be 8:30 p.m. Friday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with the Rev. Stanley Metz and Elder Dempsey Rakes officiating.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Ruth I. Lovelace, 86, of 242 Barber Ave., Beckley, died at 6:32 a.m. Saturday, June 3, 2006, at SunBridge Pine Lodge Care and Rehabilitation, Beckley, following an extended illness.

Born Aug. 5, 1919, in Roanoke, Va., she was the daughter of the late Julius S. White and Louvenia Croan White.

Mrs. Lovelace was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Beckley Assembly 305 Order of the Eastern Star, Golden Circle and the Daughter of Isis. She attended school in the Roanoke school system. While in Roanoke she was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Moses Martin; second husband, Henry T. Lovelace; brothers, June Powell, Bernice Powell, Edward Powell, Andrew Powell and Sterling White; two sisters, Evelyn Reynolds and Eunice Powell; a son, Frank Martin; and a nephew, Steven Harris.

Survivors include her nephew, John W. Harris of Roanoke; sister-in-law, Eleanor Powell of Beckley; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church, 304 Worley Road, Beckley, with the Rev. Nathaniel Carey and the Rev. H.A. Lindsay Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Saturday at the church.

Alice Virginia “Jenny” McGraw



OAK HILL — Alice Virginia “Jenny” McGraw, 89, of Oak Hill, passed away Monday, June 6, 2006.

Virginia was a bookkeeper with Houchins Manufacturing Co. for 32 years and was a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Willard McGraw.

Those left to cherish her memory include daughter, Vickie Sumpter and husband, Danny, of Oak Hill; son, Patrick McGraw and wife, Rebecca, of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Jared McGraw, Katherine McGraw and Danny Sumpter II; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Sumpter and Ethan Sump-ter; several nieces and nephews; and sister, Margaret Haskins of Norton, Ohio.

James Lonnie Perdue



MURRIETTA, Calif. — James Lonnie Perdue, 79, formerly of Nimitz, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 3, 2006, at Lake Forrest, Calif., following a long illness.

Born April 9, 1927, he was the son of the late Jesse and Margaret Bane Perdue.

Mr. Perdue had lived most of his life in West Virginia and had retired to California in 1973. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a retired automobile dealer and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary Perdue; and a brother, Charles Perdue.

Survivors include a son, Stanley Perdue and wife, Diannia, of Nimitz; three daughters, Suzenna Dolin and husband, David, of Murrietta, Rhonda Copeland and husband, Dwight, of Anaheim, Calif., and Sarah Gifford and husband, Paul, of Lake Forrest, Calif.; two brothers, Edward Gene Perdue and wife, Drema, of Crab Orchard and Hershel Perdue and wife, Scarlet, of MacArthur; two sisters, Betty Jones and husband, Charles, of Charleston and Marie Bunda and husband, Joe, of Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at Nimitz Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Don Hannah officiating. Burial will follow in Lilly-Crews Cemetery, Nimitz.

The family will receive friends one hour before service Saturday at the church.

HINTON — Joan Leith Pilkington, 78, of 1518 Summers St., went home to be with the Lord at 12:35 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at her home following a long illness.

Born May 5, 1928, in Toronto, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Agnes Leith and had been a resident of Hinton since 1962.

A homemaker who attended Riverview Chapel and partnered with her husband in the ministry at the church for 46 years, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family dearly.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Harry Pilkington; three daughters, Mary Rutherford and husband, Jonathan, of St. John, New Brunswick, Elizabeth Sipala and husband, Mike, of Chestertown, Md., and Joy Williams and husband, Jimmy, of Hinton; a son, Stephen Pilkington of Chicago, Ill.; three sisters, Jean Ramster, Gloria Prattis and Joan Willush, all of Toronto; and six grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with Larry Deeds and David Pollock officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral parlors.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to the individual’s favorite charity.

RAINELLE — Susan Ann Rodgers, 35, passed away Monday, June 5, 2006, in Charleston Area Memorial Hospital following a short illness.

Born May 18, 1971, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Alfred E. Lance Jr. and Gloria L. Lambert Lance of Rainelle.

Mrs. Rodgers worked at Zapper’s Pizza in Rainelle and attended the Tabernacle of the I Am in Rainelle.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Randy Lee Rodgers; a son, Shawn Michael Rodgers; two daughters, Kelsey Samantha and Sierra Jo Rodgers; a brother, Roger Lee Lance and wife, Donna, of Rupert; and a sister, Molly Sue Baslee and husband, Dan, of Tipton, Mo.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastor James Dunn officiating. Burial will follow in Lance Family Cemetery, Crag.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Grace Harrah White



VICTOR — Grace Harrah White, 91, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at a local hospital following a long illness.

Born Nov. 8, 1941, at Ramsey, she was the daughter of the late Vance and Nettie Eary Harrah.

Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Harry O. White; and two brothers, Lacy Harrah and Tracy Harrah.

She was of the Baptist faith. She lived all of her life at Ramsey and was a farmer.

Survivors are a foster daughter, Kathleen Bennett of Ramsey; three nephews, Tracy Harrah of Montgomery, Keith Small of Victor and a special nephew and niece, Jim and Sue White of Hico; and a host of friends and neighbors.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Beech Run Harrah Cemetery, Ramsey, with Pastor John Pittman officiating. Burial will follow.

There will be no visitation prior to service.
