William J. Ayers
William J. Ayers, 84, of 119 Wilkes Ave., Beckley, died Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at his home, surrounded by his family, following a long illness.
Born Oct. 30, 1922, at Salem, Mass., he was the son of the late William C. Ayers and Mary Theresa Davidson Ayers.
Mr. Ayers was retired from the U.S. Air Force with 26 years of service, having served in World War II, Korean Conflict and Vietnam.
He was a member of Maynor Freewill Baptist Church, and had made his home in Beckley for the past 21 years.
Mr. Ayers was preceded in death by his first wife, Allie M. Ayers; his second wife, Juanita Ayers; and sisters, Nancy Landolfi and Mary Strong.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Evans Ayers; sons, William J. Ayers Jr. and wife, Betty, of Chicopee, Mass., Robert W. Ayers and wife, Karen, of Chicopee, John Franklin Ayers and wife, Debra, of South Hadley, Mass., and Gregory G. Ayers and wife, Gina, of Chicopee; stepchildren, Rose Marie Perdue of Franklinton, N.C., Dilla Mae Scarbro of Franklinton, Rilda Mae Hunter and husband, Carl, of Franklinton, Norman Evans of Franklinton and William Evans and wife, Cindy, of Alabama; brothers, Robert Ayers of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Harold Ayers of England; a sister, Dorothy McFarlan of Florida; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
There will be no service or visitation.

Lucille Arbutus Chewning
TUG CREEK — Lucille Arbutus Chewning, 72, went home to be with the Lord at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at Summers County ARH Hospital in Hinton, surrounded by her family, after a long illness.
Born Aug. 27, 1934, at Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Roy N. and Lonnie R. Grimmett Bennett.
Lucille retired from the Nu-Way Cleaners in 1998. She enjoyed camping, sewing and cooking dinners for her family after church on Sundays and holidays. She was of the Baptist faith.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Paul Robert Chewning, on Nov. 17, 1999, and a brother, Ashley Bennett, on Nov. 15, 1999.
She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Lacy “Pete” Chewning; three sons, Darrell Chewning and wife, Cassie, of Tug Creek, Harold Chewning and companion, Kay Hall, of Flat Top and David Chewning and companion, Patty Yopp, of Lowell; two daughters, Linda Brandon and husband, Mike, and Brenda Cole, all of Tug Creek; daughter-in-law, Nancy Chewning of Tug Creek; two brothers, William Fox and wife, Nancy, of Germantown, Ohio, Roy Bennett and wife, Freda, of Middletown, Ohio; six sisters, Mary Madline Meadows and Glenna Parker, both of Hinton, Loraine Collins of Middletown, Josie Farley and husband, Ray, of Peebles, Ohio, Helen Hall and husband, Bert, of Trenton, Ohio, and Irene Tincher of Greensboro, N.C.; grandchildren, Michelle Merrill, whom she reared, and husband, Adam, of Judson, Rhonda Yopp and husband, Michael, of Lowell, Donna Boone and husband, Shane, of Alderson, Teresa Cole of Hilldale, Alicia Zimmerman and Jason Chewning of Tug Creek, Derrick Chewning, Judson Yopp of Lowell, Laura St. Clair and husband, Shane, of Jumping Branch, Renae Jones and husband, Geoff, of Forest Hill and Craig Brandon of Tug Creek; great-grandchildren, Shawn and Ericia Merrill, Rochelle, Katelyn and Hayley Yopp, Caleb, Casey and Cara Boone, Colton Zimmerman, Carley and Matthew St. Clair, Logan, Levi and Lawson Jones; and several nieces and nephews.

Carl Blaine Cox Jr.
EDMOND — Carl Blaine Cox Jr., 24, of Edmond, died suddenly on Monday, May 28, 2007, at Hico.
Born Jan. 4, 1983, in Beckley, he was the son of Carl B. Cox Sr. of Edmond and the late Teresa Allene Cox.
Mr. Cox was a self-employed gutter worker and he was a 2001 graduate of Midland Trail High School. He enjoyed life, hunting, fishing and riding his 4-wheeler with friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Teresa Allene Bays Cox, in 2001.
Left to cherish his memory are his father, Carl B. Cox Sr. of Edmond; a brother, Clifford Wayne Cox of Edmond; two sisters, Rhonda Marie Cox and Melissa Ann Cox, both of Edmond; and a host of other family and friends.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville. Burial will follow in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Marguerite Young Dransfield
TAMPA, Fla. — Marguerite Young Dransfield, 90, formerly of Union, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2007, in Tampa.
She was born May 27, 1917, at Pickaway, a daughter of the late Ray A. and Edith Nickell Young.
She was a retired elementary school teacher in Monroe County, having taught for 35 years, and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority and the National Education Association. She was a former member of Union United Methodist Church prior to moving to Tampa, where she transferred her membership to Temple Terrace United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George O. Dransfield, on May 13, 1986.
Survivors include a son, Larry Y. Dransfield and wife, Joan, of Madison, Ala., and many nieces and nephews.
Service will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 4, at Union United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Ford officiating. Burial will follow in Carmel Cemetery, Gap Mills.
The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home, Union.
The body will be taken to the church one hour before service Monday.

Melissa Jean Ford
ORLANDO, Fla. — Melissa Jean Ford, 46, died suddenly at her home May 21, 2007.
Per Melissa’s request, her ashes shall be scattered over her beloved Caribbean Sea.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. June 16 at Beckley Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ed Thompson presiding.

Natividad Furiscal
On Tuesday, May 29, 2007, Natividad Fulgar Furiscal, of Pikeview Drive, Beckley, formerly of Sta. Magdalena, Sorsogon, Philippines, passed away in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. She was in her 90th year.
Natividad was born Sept. 8, 1916, at Santa Magdalena, the daughter of the late Juan and Hilaria Fulgar Furiscal. Natividad was christened at the Church of Santa Magdalena on Sept. 17, 1916. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by two sisters and a brother.
Known affectionately as “Aya Na-ty,” Natividad came to the United States in August 2002 to be near her daughters and their families. She will be remember-ed by those who knew and loved her for her service to others.
Those who will dearly miss her include her daughters, Zeny Manallo and her husband, Frank, of Beckley and Rosalinda Gomeri of Jersey City, N.J.; granddaughters, Bernice Manallo of King of Prussia, Pa., and Julie Vida, Jhoanna and Jenie Gomeri, all of Sta. Mesa, Philippines; her only grandson, David Manallo of Kuzumaki, Japan; two brothers, Llorando and Nelson Furiscal of the Philippines; and a large extended family of cousins, nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces in the Philippines, the U.S., Canada, Spain, Australia and England.
Funeral Liturgy will be noon Saturday at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Beckley, with Father Perry Malacaman as celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in St. Sebastin Cemetery, St. Francis Lane, Beckley.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley. A vigil prayer service with the praying of the Rosary will be led by Sister Janice Rospert at 8 p.m. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Charles C. Parrish
FAYETTEVILLE — Charles C. Parrish, 66, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 27, 1940, at Nuttalburg, he was the son of the late Willard Parrish Sr. and Myrtle Pridemore.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Parrish, on March 6, 2006; three brothers, Billy Parrish, Law-rence Parrish and John Parrish; and two sisters, Dorothy Painter and Winnie Young.
Charles was an employee of Fayette County Schools as a bus driver; he drove bus No. 200.
Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Charles W. Parrish of Hilltop; his daughter, Tanya Maynus of Fayetteville; brothers, Robert Parrish of Oak Hill, Willard Parrish Jr. of Maryland and Donald Parrish of Maryland; a sister, Shelba Mitchell of Fayetteville; grandsons, Dustin and Roger “Tate” Wykle; and numerous nieces and nephews and friends.
His remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill, where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today and where service will be 1 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Meverell Leeland Pence Sr.
DELTONA, Fla. — Meverell Leeland Pence Sr., 95, formerly of Union, passed away peacefully in his favorite recliner on Friday, May 4, 2007, at his son’s home in Waxhaw, N.C.
He was born at Crossroads on Dec. 6, 1911, a son of the late Delonia and Salome Weikle Pence.
His family moved to Greenville when he was a young child and he graduated from Greenville High School.
Mr. Pence had worked as a dairy and sharecrop farmer, worked as a driver for Greenbrier Dairies and Ronceverte Feed Store, owned and operated a grocery store, service station and Pence’s Tourist Home in Union.
He served as an instructor for farm training in Monroe and Greenbrier counties, as a first-aid and defensive driving instructor, Monroe County truant officer, served on the Selective Service Board, served as transportation director for Monroe County Schools, served on the Board of Directors of Southern States and was a charter member of the Monroe County Development Corp.
Mr. Pence was an active member of several service clubs in Monroe County; he was instrumental in the location of Moncove Lake and served on the Monroe County Health Council in the development of the Monroe County Health Center.
He was a member and elder of Union Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Pence was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served at Pearl Harbor during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Mary Evelyn Mann Pence, on Sept. 3, 2000; two sisters, Gertie Pence Roles and Pearl Pence Vass; and three brothers, Herbert, Forest and Reo Pence.
Survivors include a daughter, Irene Pyster and her husband, Walter, of Deltona; four sons, Lee Pence and his wife, Lisa, of Waxhaw, Francis Pence and his wife, Liz, of Deltona and Union, Mark Pence and his wife, Connie, of Cross Lanes and Dennis Pence and his wife, Suzie, of Covington, Va.; two brothers, Luster Pence of Lindside and Mervin Pence and his wife, Mildred, of Greenville; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Pence of Virginia; 20 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Union Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Todd Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Union.

Nancy Lura Reed
OCEANA — Nancy Lura Reed departed this life Saturday, May 26, 2007, at her son’s home in Coleman, Fla., at the age of 83 years, 1 month, and 7 days following a short illness.
Born April 19, 1924, at Brayholm, she was the daughter of the late Emory Clinton and Golda Graham Walker.
She was a member of Oceana Church of God and she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Otto Reed; a son, James Ronald Reed; great-granddaughter, Rachel Sue Keenan; and a sister, Joyce Hash.
Those left to cherish her memory are two sons, Clinton Reed and his wife, Francis, of Coleman and Richard Reed of Oceana; two daughters, Darlene Powell and her husband, Jim, of Coleman and Rita Hall and her husband, Bennie, of Matheny; two brothers, Jack Walker and his wife, Athelene, of Glen Fork and Bill Walker of Kopperston; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, many loving nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
A celebration of Lura’s life will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Rev. Sandy Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Born at Columbia, S.C., on Feb. 1, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Ernest R. Crout and Thelma Haltiwanger Crout.
She was a homemaker and of the Lutheran faith. She had made her home at Lester for the past 20 years.
Surviving are her husband of 40 years, Boies H. Richardson; a son, Michael Richardson and wife, Cynthia, of Lester; a daughter, Holly Richardson of Ann Arbor, Mich.; a sister, Kathy Hutchinson of Ingles, Fla.; and three grandchildren, Brittany, Gunner, and Lena.

Carolyn Sue Hutchens Short
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Carolyn Sue (Hutchens) Short passed away Monday, May 28, 2007, in Overland Park after a brave battle with colon cancer.
Carolyn was born in Beckley in 1948. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and Beckley College. She moved to southern California and then returned to Beckley in 1978 to serve the executives of Westmoreland Coal Co. She moved to Tallahassee, Fla., in the early ’90s where she was a frequent volunteer at Birdsong Arboretum as well as her children’s schools. She moved to Las Vegas, Nev., in the late ’90s where she helped run a small business. She relocated with the business to Overland Park in 2002 and worked until the month of her death. Carolyn loved to travel and was a British car enthusiast, winning several prizes at nationally sanctioned car shows.
She is survived by her husband, L. Mark Short, and her three children, Phillip C. Meyers of Greenwich, Conn., Jennifer L. Kemp of New Orleans, La., and Savanna K. Kemp of Overland Park. She is also survived by a large and loving extended family.
A very special thank you to the loving care given by the professionals at Kansas City Cancer Center on Holmes Boulevard.

Glennis Roy Stidam
Glennis Roy Stidam, 78, of Beckley, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, May 30, 2007, after an extended illness.
Born June 8, 1928, at Herndon, he was the son of the late Dewey and Nettie Williams Stidam.
Mr. Stidam spent his early childhood in Kentucky and West Virginia. He was a retired coal mine electrician, having worked for Slab Fork Coal Co. and U.S. Steel. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Stidam was a member of Jones Memorial Baptist Church in Beckley, where he served on the deacon board, Board of Trustees, finance committee and advisory board.
He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Ethel; an infant brother, Larry; sisters, Shirley Bolen, Earnie Conley, Betty McClure and Bea Lane; and a stepson, Bobby Williams.
Those left to mourn his passing are his loving wife of 42 years, Sophia Williams Stidam; a son, Jimmy Ray Stidam and wife, Katsu, of Tokyo, Japan; seven sisters, Ruth Wilson of Michigan, Faye Helton of Tennessee, Elsie McClure of Florida, Mabel Conley of Ohio, Brenda Whalen of Virginia, Hazel Gordon of Virginia and Vernie Conley of Ohio; three grandchildren, Sherri Lee Stidam, B.J. Will-iams Jr. and Kacy Lee Will-iams; and several nieces and nephews.

Josephine Sutphin, 88, died Thursday, May 31, 2007, at a Huntington hospital.

Philbin D. Wheatley
Philbin D. Wheatley, a kind and humble man, died May 29, 2007, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.
A small stroke, then pneumonia led to his death.
He was born Sept. 12, 1919, to William Allen and Martha Sanders Wheatley. He was a lifelong resident of Boone County.
He was a graduate of Scott High School in Madison and Marshall University with a B.A. in education. He taught in the Boone County school system for about 33 years. He and his wife Jewell were the teachers in a two-room school in Manila many years. When Manila school closed, both taught at Ramage Elementary until their retirement.
The most influential time of his life occurred with his service during World War II. He served in a glider unit with the 82nd Airborne Division of the Army assigned for four and a half years overseas; Normandy, Holland, Battle of the Bulge, Casablanca, Naples, Italy were a few of his stops. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 1, 1945. Phil was so very proud of his country and for the freedoms for which he fought.
He was married to Jewell L. Smith Wheatley on July 11, 1946.
She preceded him in death on April 11, 2000. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Dalmond, Arden and Emil; and sisters, Iris, Neva and Nelda.
Survivors include his daughter, Carolyn Jean Richmond “Jeannie” and her husband, William F., of Beckley; a grandson, Scott, his wife, Anna, and a newborn, Alex, of Houston, Texas; granddaughter, Christina and her husband, Michael Holliday, and infant son, Andrew, of Charlotte, N.C.; sister, Mina Ball of Ramage; many nieces and nephews; and a wonderful neighbor, Richard Knight of Madison.
Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, with Pastor John Barker officiating. Burial will follow in Boone Memorial Park, Madison.

Julia Beckett Wiley
ATHENS — Julia Beckett Wiley, 94, of 314 S. State St., died Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at Princeton Community Hospital.
Born June 27, 1912, at Fitzpatrick, she was the daughter of the late George and Gertrude Basham Beckett.
She retired in 1975 after 23 years of dedicated service as a teacher for Mercer County Schools. Mrs. Wiley last taught at Whitethorn Elementary School in Bluefield. She was a 1930 graduate of Athens High School and a 1934 graduate of Concord College. She was a member of Athens Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher for the young adults class. She was a member of Athens Chapter No. 33 Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Concord College Alumni Association and the Retired Teachers Association.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bennie D. “Ben” Wiley; a grandson, David Pike; nine brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Rose Pike of Athens and Letha Ann Taylor and her husband, Owen, of Richlands, Va.; five grandchildren, Tim Pike, Mike Pike, Russell Taylor, Tammy Bartfai and Sarah Bushati; a great-grandchild, Tori Bartfai; and a brother, Earl Beckett and his wife, Eula, of Rich Creek, Va.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2, at George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home, Princeton, with the Rev. Tom Vance officiating. Burial will follow in Athens Cemetery.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
