PELL CITY, Ala. — Thomas “Barry” Parks, of Pell City, was born in Birmingham, Ala., at Baptist Hospital on Aug. 20, 1949. He left this world on May 11, 2008.
Barry was a natural artist and athlete while growing up. In 1970, he became a pole vaulter with the Marshall University track team. Later he was rated as a master mechanic on Johnson Outboards while managing a boat dock at Bluestone Reservoir in West Virginia.
In 1982, Barry was involved in a car accident. Thanks to the dedication of his doctor, Amie Jackson, and the professional staff of Spain Rehabilitation Center, Barry was able to survive, even though the accident left him quadriplegic. Through the encouragement of the hospital staff, the unceasing assistance of his mother, Bobbie, his own innovation and his incredible will to be as independent as possible, Barry relearned to draw and paint, using prosthetic devices he designed. He was most noted for his pencil drawing of Native Americans but was also quite proficient in the use of water colors, colored pencils and acrylics. Barry was a member of Very Special Artists of Alabama and won many awards, including an international blue ribbon award in Belgium in 1994.
His ability to overcome the odds and obstacles of his disability without complaint were an inspiration to anyone who had the pleasure to know him. His family and friends will miss him as he joins his mother at rest. He asked for no flowers or memorial but only to patronize the arts of your choice.
His beloved mother, Bobbie Anderton Parks, preceded Barry in death. He is survived by his father, Thomas Lee Parks; his stepmother, Jan; his son, Thomas Jayson Parks; and granddaughter, Sierra Parks, as well as the Eastis and Anderton Families of Birmingham.
