Janice Faye Thompson
NIMITZ — Janice Faye Thompson, 70, of Nimitz, went to be with her maker on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, after a short but courageous battle with acute onset leukemia.
Born March 7, 1938, in Cross Plains, Tenn., she was the oldest daughter of the late Paul C. and Mary Catherine “Cat” Carlisle Dixon. Janice cherished her childhood memories growing up with her extended nearby family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cou-sins. Her family moved to Ohio when she was young, so she grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated from nearby Lakewood High School. But her family kept strong ties to their Tennessee roots. After graduating, she met and married her husband of nearly 52 years, “Bill,” on May 19, 1956, who is originally of Nimitz/Forest Hills. They started their family in Graf-ton, Ohio, and then moved to North Ridgeville, Ohio, until the early ’80s, when they moved back to Bill’s grandparents’ homestead in Nimitz. Before becoming the mother of five, Janice enjoyed her early career in administrative secretary positions in the printing business. After moving to Nimitz, she worked as a nurse’s aide and then enrolled in nursing school and earned her LPN degree, just prior to her 50th birthday. She enjoyed a several-year career in two nursing home centers prior to a knee injury that caused her to give up an “on your feet” position, and eventually limited her attendance at Mount Olivet Church, where her husband has been the pastor for the past 21 years.
Besides her parents, Janice was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Nita Bishop, and many dear aunts and uncles.
She is survived by her devoted husband, the Rev. William Andrew Thompson; three daughters, Sheree Jo Smith of St. Albans, Desiree Reed and husband, Tom, of Nimitz and Renee Joy Thompson of Nimitz; two sons, Frank Andrew Thompson of Nimitz and William Donald “Billy-Don” Thompson of Raleigh, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Jocelyn Rose Melin, Ashley, Sean, Katelyn, Wesley Parker and Beth Corinne Reed, Jason Dodd and Peyton Andrew Thompson; three sisters, Lois Ann Dixon Thompson and husband, Don, brother of Bill of North Virginia, and Patsy Ruth Dixon and Paula Sue Meadows and husband, Jeff, all of Elyria, Ohio; a brother, Jackie Dixon of Ashland, Ky.; three sisters-in-law, Marylou Agnew and Corrine Chisholm, both of Newport News, Va., and Rose Adkins and husband, Hobert, of Meadow Creek; two aunts, Jo Dean Payne of Orlinda, Tenn., and Dolly Dixon of Beckley; and many, many nieces, nephews, cou-sins, their children and grandchildren and several close friends.
After the sudden onset of leukemia at the end of February and her body’s inability to cope with the required aggressive treatment, she displayed her strong faith in her savior, Jesus, and the promise of life in Heaven, where she’ll join those loved ones who’ve gone before, and await the arrival of her loved ones to join them when it’s our turn to join our Savior at our journeys’ end. She wishes us all love, fond memories, a joyful life and a place for her in our hearts. She truly treasured all her relationships, and is treasured in return.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with Pastor Bobby Reed officiating. Burial will follow in Parker Family Cemetery, Nimitz.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral parlors.
