Warren William Fox
DANESE — Warren William Fox, 68, of Danese, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2008, at home following a short illness.
Born March 18, 1940, in Crickmer, he was a son of the late Marvin Ray “Rube” and Mary Kathleen Martin Fox.
Mr. Fox was a retired miner, having worked at Eastern Associated Coal Corp. at Herndon and retired from Beckley Coal Mining Co. at Glen Daniel. Also, he was a member of the UMWA and had worked part-time for Enterprise Rent-A-Car No. 35 in Beckley as a car transporter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepson, Curtis Cox, and a brother, Douglas Ray Fox.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Alverta Smith Fox; a daughter, Debra Johnson and her husband, Bernie, of Danese; a stepdaughter, Belva Jones and her husband, Gene, of Meadow Bridge; three sisters, Freda Owens of Burnside, Ky., Sue “Kitten” Patterson of Meadow Bridge and Deana Hanshew of Prince George, Va.; three brothers, Tracy Fox of Mason, Ohio, Fairlie Fox of Backus Mountain and Garlin Fox of Danese; and his beloved Boston terriers, Roxy and Baxter.
Per his request, there will be a graveside service at 2 p.m. Monday, May 12, at Patton Memorial Cemetery, Meadow Bridge, with Pastor Steve Martin officiating.

Shirley Ann Gwinn
SANDSTONE — Shirley Ann Gwinn, 68, of Sandstone, went home to be with the Lord at 11:08 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2008, at her home following a long illness.
Born Aug. 6, 1939, at Meadow Creek, she was the daughter of the late John William and Lola Florence Bowles.
Shirley was the last surviving member of her family.
Shirley was a homemaker and was a member of Meadow Creek Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by six brothers and four sisters.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry Gwinn; two daughters, Judy Woodruff of Hinton and Melissa Gwinn of Sandstone; a grandson, Tony Wayne Woodruff-Casavant of Waycross, Ga.; two special friends, Jim and Ellen Webber; and a host of family and friends.
Graveside service and burial will be 1 p.m. Monday, May 12, at Fox Cemetery, Sandstone, with Pastors Harry Allen and Andy Howdock officiating.
There will be no visitation.
Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Earl Woods, Johnny Brackenrich, Ronnie Smith, Eugene Jones, Timothy Grimmett and Richards Sims.

Charley Ray Harris Sr.
RAINELLE — On Friday, May 9, 2008, the greatest Daddy in the world went to Heaven to be with his Heavenly Father. Charley Ray Harris Sr., 89, a 55-year resident of Rainelle, passed away at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea.
Born May 21, 1918, in Meadow Bridge, he was the son of the late Ashby and Pearl Gwinn Harris.
Charley worked for Meadow River Lumber Co. and Georgia-Pacific before retiring. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Charlie Ray Harris Jr.; and three brothers, Curtis A. Harris, Russell Harris and Henry Harris.
Mr. Harris is survived by his wife of 69 years, Madeline Grace Lively Harris; two daughters, Bonnie Harris and Leah Harris O’Dell and husband, Ricky, all of Rainelle; three sons, Lee Harris and wife, Darlene, of Rupert, Tommy Harris and Sue of Rainelle and Steven Harris and wife, Cece, of Ronceverte; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Darlene Harris of Marfrance; a brother, Lawrence Harris of Rainelle; two sisters-in-law, Bert Harris of California and Alma Harris of Danese; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. There are also many special friends and extended family surviving Charley.
Service will be 2 p.m. Monday, May 12, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastor Mike Whisman and Pastor Bennie Kenney officiating. Burial will follow at Patton Memorial Cemetery, Meadow Bridge.

Carlos Gene Lambert
OAK HILL — Carlos Gene Lambert, 59, of Oak Hill, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2008, at UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va., following a long battle of black lung and a recent double lung transplant.
Born Jan. 8, 1949, in Pemberton, he was the son of the late Richard and Dixie Wiles Lambert.
Carlos retired from the coal mines after 33 years. He was a member of the UMWA. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Scarbro after being baptized July 8, 2007. In his spare time, Carlos enjoyed spending time with his family, along with hunting, fishing, gardening and four-wheeling.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, James “Pops” Sarver; three brothers, Thomas L.J. Lambert, Arnold Lambert and Ross Lambert; and a grandson, Hunter Scott Lambert.
Survivors include his wife, Jill Sarver Lambert; five children, Danny Lambert, Jeff Lambert and his wife, Stephanie, of Sophia, Jeremy Lambert, stationed at Fort Huachuca, Sierra Vista, Ariz., Justin Lambert at home and Jessica Lambert at home; two grandchildren, Adam Cole Lambert of Oak Hill and Kyndal Paige Lambert of Sophia; two sisters, Ada Daniels of Daniels and Margaret Camara and husband, Titlo, of Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Richard Lambert and his wife, Rose, of Pemberton; special niece, Joetta Cooper of Coal City; special nephew, Gene Martin and his wife, Debbie, of Pemberton; several other nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Bill “Bronco” Sizemore and his wife, Tina, of Bason, Mont.
Service will be 2 p.m. today at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Pastor Kenny Smith and Deacon Bob Creed officiating. Burial will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
Friends may call 12:30 to 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.

BALLARD — Roy W. Sanders, 65, of Ballard, passed away Friday, May 9, 2008, at his home following a courageous battle with lung cancer.
He was born Feb. 22, 1943, in Gold Bond, Va., and was the son of the late Harvey and Grace Sanders.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Violet Lawson and infant twin sister Elizabeth Sanders; and a brother, Jack Sanders.
Mr. Sanders was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Forest Hill and was a former timberman.
Survivors include his loving wife of 44 years, Mae Broyles Sanders; a daughter, Reana Cody and husband, James, of Marie; two sons, Roy L. Sanders and wife, Donna, of Ballard and Timmy Sanders and wife, Kristi, of Ballard and Denton, N.C.; six grandsons, two great-grandsons, and a great-granddaughter; three brothers, Junior Sanders and wife, Edith, of Princeton, Danny Sanders and wife, Mildred, of Peterstown and George Sanders and wife, Vickie, of Christiansburg, Va.; two sisters, Lorraine Huffman and husband, Otuce, of Peterstown and Ann Roberts and husband, Keith, of Lindside; family friend and caregiver, Barbara Bowden; and Hospice nurses, Melissa Morgan, Tammy Cox and Marsha Shepherd.

Priscilla Kerns Stewart
Priscilla Kerns Stewart, 63, of Piney View, beloved mother, grandmother, wife, sister and friend, went home to be with the Lord and her husband Ray, on Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley after a courageous battle of many disabling illnesses.
Priscilla was born Nov. 11, 1945, in Clarksburg to the late Maynard and Mildred Jean Kerns.
Priscilla was a Christian and her faith in God sustained her through many hard times in her life on this Earth. Priscilla’s favorite saying was, “The Lord will take care of it!” She was a very special person, and although she suffered for many years, she never complained and was always happy with a smile on her face. She touched everyone she knew in such a special way. She will never be forgotten!
She spent her spare time, before becoming very ill, writing poetry, singing gospel hymns and enjoying visits from her friends. She checked on many people by phone, and was a great prayer partner for many.
Other than her parents, Priscilla was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Stewart, on May 2 of this year.
Those left to cherish her memory include two children, her daughter Michelle Fry and her husband, Dwayne, and their two children, her grandchildren, Jessica Dawn and Charles Tyler, of Piney View, and her son, James Stewart and his wife, Lola, of Crab Orchard; two sisters, Barbara Hanlin and her husband, Rick, of Martins Ferry, Ohio, and Darlene Morgan and her husband, Joe, of Sophia; a brother, Edward Kerns of Wheeling; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A very special thanks to Dr. E.J. Salon for all he did for Priscilla and her husband Ray. His care and kindness will never be forgotten. A special thanks to Raleigh General Hospital and all the staff for the special care that was given for many months. Also a very special thank you to Jan-Care Ambulance Service for the special escort that they provided Priscilla, with her husband Ray’s service on Monday, May 5. Also a special thank you to Blue Ridge and staff for their help and support.

Ruth Daniel Talbert Stover
ORLANDO, Fla. — Ruth Daniel Talbert Stover, 95, of Orlando, died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at her home.
Born Sept. 21, 1912, at Cirtsville, she was the daughter of the late Hubert and Blanche Maynor Daniel.
A graduate of Stoco High School where she was the valedictorian of the Class of 1931 and also on the basketball team, Ruth lived a long and very active life. At the age of 13 she began playing the piano for the silent movies at the Stanaford Theater and also played at the Beaver Theater. She played the organ for the church in Princewick, worked at the Purple Box in Beckley, sold insurance for George Washington Life Insurance Co. and served as postmistress for the University of Florida. During World War II she worked in a munitions plant in Baltimore, Md., loading powder into bullet shells. She also spent three years in Madrid, Spain, when her husband was transferred there.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Charles Kendrick Talbert; her second husband, John Earl Stover; her sister, Helen Daniel Collier; her son, Charles Daniel “Mike” Talbert; her son-in-law, Lional Herrald; and her great-granddaughter, Rachel McGraw.
She is survived by her three daughters, Helen Hope Talbert Snuffer (Richard) of Surveyor, Patsy Talbert Herrald of Beckley and Kathryn Jane Stover Wallace of Orlando; her daughter-in-law, Raymetta Talbert Stowers (Dick) of Brandon, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Richard Snuffer II, John Paul Snuffer (Sandi) of Surveyor, Cynthia Snuffer Henderson (Roger) of Blacksburg, Va., Lori Herrald McGraw of Beckley, Lisa Herrald Carter (Jeff) of Gastonia, N.C., Lional “Chip” Herrald (Sue) of Yawkey, Kellie Talbert Kintz (Tom) of Atlantis, Fla., Kimberly Talbert Kimbrel (Jay) of Albany, Ga., Kevin Talbert of Brandon, Fla., and Joshua Wallace of Clermont, Fla.; 20 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; and a special nephew, William D. “Punk” Collier (Margaret) of Beckley.
She was a member of Reeves Memorial Methodist Church in Orlando, where she was chairman of the devotions for her circle for many years and was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Monday, May 12, at United Methodist Temple, Beckley, with the Rev. Dan Johnson, the Rev. Dewey Lowe and the Rev. Roger Henderson officiating. Friends may gather with the family one hour before service at the church.

Robert Edwin Thorpe
ANSTED — Robert Edwin Thorpe, 83, of Ansted, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2008, at his home following a long illness.
Mr. Thorpe was born July 24, 1924, in Middletown, N.Y., and was the son of the late Robert W. And Eva Kanoff Thorpe.
He was a retired electrician, a member of IBEW Local Union 1249 of Syracuse, N.Y., a World War II Marine veteran and a survivor of Iwo Jima. He attended many local churches.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Hiser Thorpe; three daughters, Wendy Gill of New York, Virginia Ross of Mississippi and Stacey Davis of Tennessee; three sisters, Aldeane Davitt, Caryl Ward and Eva Shuback; a brother, William Thorpe; and several stepchildren, stepgrand and great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Ansted, with the Rev. Dr. Eugene Blankenship and Mike Hess officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
