Julia M. Brown
Julia M. Brown, 77, of 132 Taylor St., West Wickham, departed this life Saturday, May 3, 2008, following a long illness in Columbus, Ohio.
She was born Jan. 10, 1931, in Edwight. She was the daughter of the late William and Mary Grant.
She was united in marriage to Charles Brown of West Wickham. She resided in West Wickham until illness caused her relocation to Columbus.
She was a member of Glorious Church of God in Christ under leadership of Bishop Felix Robinson, and later moved membership to Glorious Church of God in Christ under leadership of Bishop John Grant.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Brown; four brothers, Willie “Do-Right,” James, J.C. “Allen,” George and Billie Grant.
She leaves behind to mourn her passing, Jerome (Brenda) Brown of North Carolina, Bishop John (Gwen) Grant and Sylvester Grant and Naomi Stevenson; and a host of nieces and nephews, many devoted relatives and friends.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at Free and Independent Holiness Church, 106 Seventh St., Beckley, with Bishop Ernest Stewart officiating and Elder Robert Hicks. Viewing will be one hour before service.
Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Family will receive friends at the home of the brother, Bishop Grant, at 201 Dock St., Beckley.

Anthony Clyde ‘Mouse’ Browning
BAILEYSVILLE — Anthony Clyde “Mouse” Browning, 50, departed this life Tuesday, May 6, 2008.
Born Jan. 27, 1958, he was a son of the late Jack Browning and Joann Hoosier Browning of Coal Mountain.
Anthony was a very family-oriented man, he loved spending time with family but, most of all, loved spending time with his kids. He enjoyed four-wheeling, football and playing horseshoes.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Terri Lester, and a nephew, Chris Cline.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Pamela Browning; his mother, Joann Hoosier of Coal Mountain; two sons, Jason Morgan of Baileysville and Teddy Bennett and his wife, Robbie, of North Carolina; two daughters, Leann Browning of Baileysville and Scarlett Browning of Baileysville; two brothers, Paul Browning and his wife, Cathy, of Matheny and Curtis Brown and his wife, Sherry, of Brandywine; three sisters, Sheila Graham and her husband, Stanley, of Fort Seybert, Christine Cline of Pineville and Jackie Hatfield and her husband, Allen, of Coal Mountain; two grandsons, Chase and Cameron; a granddaughter, Christine; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
A celebration of Mouse’s life will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Rev. Billy Stewart officiating. Burial will follow at Browning Family Cemetery, Baileysville.
Casketbearers will be Jeff Graham, Stanley Graham, Jason Morgan, Steven Browning, Mike “Pebo” Clyde Browning and Jason Massie.
Family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Paul J. Green
CALHOUN, Ga. — Paul J. Green, 81, of Calhoun, died Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at his residence following several months of declining health.
Paul was born in Harper on Aug. 18, 1926, son of the late William T. and Ennis Lewis Green. Prior to his retirement he was a machine operator with Massey-Ferguson. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during WWII. Paul was of the Baptist faith and had lived in Calhoun for the past 22 years. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry and Rev. William C. Green, and a great-great-granddaughter, Jessica Simms.
Survivors include his wife Mary Sue Wood Green; three daughters, Tonna Anderson of Taylor, Mich., and Pat Colston and Rhonda Neal, both of Calhoun; two sons, Paul Green Jr. and his wife, Pam, of Calhoun and Gary Green and his wife, Ginger, of Taylor; two granddaughters, Victoria “Tori” Jones of Calhoun and Amanda Green of Taylor; seven grandsons, Jimmy Simms of Melvindale, Mich., Michael Simms of Lima, Ohio, Gary Green Jr. of Taylor, Robbie Donohoe of Bowling Green, Ky., Brian Donohoe of Aragon, Ga., and Josh and Nathaniel Green, both of Calhoun; two great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons; a brother, Herbert Green and his wife, Betty, of Taylor; four sisters, Edna Cooper of Beckley, Mary Messersmith and her husband, Robert, of Clearville, Pa., Wanda West and her husband, Bennie, of Delaware and Brenda Wyatt and her husband, Dick, of Hagerstown, Md.; and a sister-in-law, Wanda Green of Beckley.
Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, from the Chapel of Thomas Funeral Home, Calhoun, with the Rev. Ronnie Wells and Chaplain Jim Hermon officiating. Burial will follow at Fain Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Darrell Reed Haney III
Darrell Reed Haney III, 21, of Beckley, died Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown following a long illness.
Born Sept. 5, 1986, in Beckley, he was the son of Melva Jean Hodge Nunn and husband Mark of Glen Daniel and Darrell Reed Haney Jr. and wife Linda of Crab Orchard.
Darrell was a former coal miner, having last worked for Cowan Inc. He was of the Baptist faith and was a lifetime resident of Raleigh County.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Amanda Ward Haney; daughter, Alexis Skylar Haney, and son, Levi Darrell Haney, both at home; mother-in-law, Rhonda Covey and her husband, Jack, of Shady Spring; father-in-law, Edward Ward of Crab Orchard; sisters-in-law, Tonia Castle and husband, Greg, of Crab Orchard and Robin Covey of Crab Orchard; brothers-in-law, Justin Ward of Texas, Billy Tyree of Lester and Bobby Tyree of MacArthur; sister, Tiffany Woods and husband, Jackie, of Beckley; and two sisters, Latisha Nunn of Glen Daniel and Veronica Haney of Crab Orchard.
Funeral service will be 8 p.m. Saturday at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Wayne Nutter officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 p.m. until time of service on Saturday.

Fredrick Franklin Hayes
Fredrick Franklin Hayes, 68, of Beaver, went home to be with the Lord and received his heavenly reward on Tuesday morning, May 6, 2008, after a heroic battle with ALS.
A loving and devoted husband and father, Mr. Hayes was born Feb. 16, 1940, in Blue Jay and was the son of the late Theron A. Hayes and Margaret V. Hayes of Blue Jay.
Fred was a member of Crow Baptist Church and had lived most of his life in the Beckley area. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Hayes served from 1958 to 1961. He was a retired salesman for Lance Inc., and former employee of the Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Hayes was preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis Hayes; a brother, Tommy Hayes; and mother-in-law, Josephine Richmond.
Those left to cherish his wonderful precious memory are his beloved wife of 48 years, Shirley Ann Hayes; son, Jeffrey W. Hayes; sister, Cathy Fisher and husband, Bob; sister-in-law, Linda Hayes; father-in-law, Jack Richmond; sister-in-law, Sheila Ellis; brother-in-law, Jack Richmond Jr. and wife, Linda; nephew, Randy Redus and wife, Karen; niece, Vicki Martinez and husband, Lupe; nephew, Kevin Redus and wife, Michelle; nephew, Rusty Hayes; niece, Theresa Whittaker and husband, G.W.; nephew, David Richmond and wife, Tami; special cousin, Cheryl Williams and husband, Jim; six great-nieces; five great-nephews; one great-great-niece and one great-great-nephew.
Greatly loved and admired by all, Fred will be deeply missed by numerous caring relatives and cousins, Pastor Dennis Burks and wife, Pat, members of Crow Baptist Church, many lifelong friends of Blue Jay, Pastor Betty Lusk, abundant friends from Leisure Lanes, members of the Senior Bowling League, several thoughtful compassionate neighbors, and his loyal companion, “Scooby.”
Service will be noon Saturday, May 10, at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Dennis Burks officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Jack Richmond Jr., David Richmond, G.W. Whittaker, Dennis Phillips, Doug Richmond and Don Richmond. Honorary pallbearers will be Bennie Phillips and Thearn Ellis.

Jo Ann Jordan
Jo Ann Jordan, 77, of Shady Spring, passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2008, following a sudden illness.
Born July 21, 1930, at Welch, she was the daughter of the late Wilmer and Ruie Smith Snuffer.
Mrs. Jordan had performed secretarial duties for several years and was a homemaker. She was a graduate of Beckley College with a secretarial degree and was a former employee of the Raleigh County Community Action Association and the Watts Insurance Agency. Jo Ann was a member of Crow Christian Church for 61 years.
She was preceded in death by her two half brothers, Eugene and Ralph Mounts; and a half sister, Ethel Sexton.
Surviving are her husband of 47 years, Charles F. Jordan Jr.; a son, Charles Robert Jordan and his wife, Ersela Jordan, of Shady Spring; three grandchildren, Charles Dakota Jordan, Ciera Leeann Jordan and Kerri Leeann Jordan; and an adopted sister, Jane Carole Generia and husband, Mike, of Pennsylvania.
Service will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Shady Spring Chapel, with the Rev. John Rinker officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Anthony W. Maddy
Anthony W. Maddy, 37, of Raleigh, died Tuesday, May 6, 2008, of natural causes at his home. He was the son of Clinton and El-veda Lucas Maddy of Raleigh.
Mr. Maddy was born at Chicago, Ill., on April 4, 1971.
Mr. Maddy was an avid hunter and enjoyed spending time with family, fishing and ATV riding. He was a former coal miner.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Jack and Mildred Patrick Maddy; maternal grandparents, Fred and Florence Lucas, and Mary Lucas; a special uncle, Dallas Maddy; and two cousins, James Maddy and Dallas Maddy Jr.
He was loved and will be greatly missed by his mother and father; other family members include a brother, John Maddy of Sullivan; two sisters, Teresa Maddy of Daniels and Patricia Sluss and husband, Michael, of Jumping Branch; three nephews, Johnathon Maddy and Nathan Maddy, both of Prosperity, Michael Sluss Jr. of Jumping Branch; and a niece, Makayla Sluss of Jumping Branch. Anthony loved these children as if they were his own. Numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and family and friends also survive.
Service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Dwayne Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Keaton and Lucas Cemetery, Pipestem.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Samuel Burton Mann
LEWISBURG — Samuel Burton Mann, 81, a 51-year resident of Lewisburg, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at University Hospital in Charlottesville, Va.
Mr. Mann was born June 4, 1926, in Renick, and graduated from Renick High School. He attended West Virginia Institute of Technology on an athletic scholarship where he lettered in basketball and football. He received a master’s degree from West Virginia University in rehabilitation counseling.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James F. Mann Sr. and Cline Christie Mann; his wife of 42 years, Kathryn Louise Poole Mann; brother, Dr. James F. Mann Jr.; and sister, Mary Christie Mann Zinn.
Mr. Mann served in the U.S. Army during World War II. A school teacher and coach prior to his 37-year career with vocational rehabilitation, he began work as a field counselor and later served as district supervisor for the West Virginia Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. Through his work Mr. Mann worked to improve the quality of life for citizens who had to overcome physical, intellectual, or emotional barriers to employment. An avid golfer, he enjoyed a post-retirement position as a golf ranger for nine years at The Greenbrier resort.
He was a long-term member of the Lewisburg United Methodist Church, National and West Virginia Rehabilitation Associations, Lewisburg Lodge No. 1758 of BPOE and Greenbrier Valley Elks Country Club. He served as past chairman of the Southeastern Regional Workshops, Board of Directors of LUMC, and especially enjoyed his terms as exalted ruler of local No. 1758 BPOE and district deputy grand exalted ruler for the Elks.
Mr. Mann is survived by his wife of 18 years, Phyllis Livesay McWhorter Mann; daughter, Christie Mann Finn and her husband, Mike, of Greensboro, N.C.; Dr. Thomas F. Mann of Lewisburg; and granddaughter, Kelly Kathryn Finn of Greensboro.
There will be a private family interment at the mausoleum in Rosewood Cemetery prior to a memorial service at 2 p.m. today at Lewisburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Joseph Kenaston officiating. A reception will follow the memorial service in the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifting to Hospice Care Inc., 540 N. Jefferson St., Lewisburg, WV 24901, in memory of this delightful man.

Edward ‘Eddie’ Eugene Williams
Edward “Eddie” Eugene Williams, 49, of Beckley, passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 6, 1958, at Charleston, a son of the late Don Williams Sr. and Pearl Williams Rice Yancy of Beckley.
He worked as a trackman in the coal mining industry.
Along with his mother, he is survived by a son, Eddie Gene Williams of Ohio; two brothers, Alan R. Williams and his wife, Polly, of Colcord and Don Williams Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Georgia; and two grandchildren, Malina Williams and Jason Williams.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Pineview Cemetery Mausoleum, Orgas, with Pastor Greg Scarbro officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery.
Friends may call one hour before service at the mausoleum.
