Rosa Kathleen Bright





COLORAO SPRINGS, Colo. — Rosa Kathleen Bright, 68, of Colorado Springs, formerly of Beckley, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2008, at Memorial Hospital following a short illness.

Mrs. Bright was born in Stanaford on Nov. 26, 1939, the daughter of the late Moulton Alexander and Lillie Mae Harbison. She married the late John Henry Bright on Dec. 2, 1987.

She was a nurse aide for Pine Lodge nursing home in Beckley. She attended Church for all Nations in Colorado Springs, and the Colorado Springs Senior Center. She enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Bright was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Bright, seven brothers and a sister.

Mrs. Bright is survived by her son, Darren Pasley, and his wife, Yvette Pasley, of Colorado Springs; her seven grandchildren, Brittani, Corey, Nicholas, Jordan, Jason and Myla Pasley, all of Colorado Springs, and Christopher Pasley and his wife, Tiffany Pasley, of Albuquerque, N.M.; her siblings: Charles Harbison of Phoenix, Ariz., Lillie Berry Sheppard of Mabscott, John Harbison and Anne Sears of Cleveland, Ohio, Lula Kirkpatrick of Charleston, Sunday Hendricks of Mount Hope and David Harbison and Louis Holmes of Beckley; and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Service will be noon Saturday, May 10, at Central Baptist Church, Brooks and G streets, Beckley, with the Revs. R. Earl Rogers and David F. Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service at the church.

David Lee DuFour





David Lee DuFour, of Kyle Lane, Beckley, passed away at his home on Tuesday, May 6, 2008. He was 36 years of age.

Davis was a graduate of independence High School. He was employed by Pizza Palace and was the former owner of Dave’s Sport Cards & More. David enjoyed collecting baseball cards and spending time with his family.

David was preceded in death by his father, Jack DuFour. He was also preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Rupert Eugene “Chow” Crouch and Melba Ray Rhodes Crouch; his paternal grandparents, Jenny Margaret DuFour and George DuFour; and a sister Marie Reece.

Survivors include his dedicated mother Claudette “Sue” Crouch Kozloski and father, Leonard Kozloski, of 116 Kyle Lane, Beckley; brothers, Donald Jackson DuFour and wife, Lori, of Mabscott and Jack Kozloski of Michigan; sisters, Ellen Lambert and husband, Jeff, of Princeton, Lisa Cox and husband, Frank, of Prosperity and Diana Kinley and husband, Scott, of Stanley, N.C.; eight nieces: Chelsea DuFour, Kylie DuFour, Kaitlyn DuFour, Angela Reece, Chrissa Kozloski, Heather Kozloski, Tabitha Whitt and Alyson Cox; and five nephews, Richard Reece, Adam Whitt, Eric Whitt, Frankie Cox and Matthew Kinley. He is also survived by a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Friday, May 9, at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Carl Sellards officiating. Burial will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Friends may call 2 p.m. until time of service Friday.

Pallbearers will be Eric Whitt, Adam Whitt, Derek Crouch, Nicholas Hall, Jeremy Canaday, Charles McDaniel, Mike Breeden, Brandon Richardson, Curtis Sears, Tom Hopkins and Joe Adkins.

Fredrick Franklin Hayes





Fredrick Franklin Hayes, 68, of Beaver, went home to be with the Lord and received his heavenly reward on Tuesday morning, May 6, 2008, after a heroic battle with ALS.

A loving and devoted husband and father, Mr. Hayes was born Feb. 16, 1940, in Blue Jay and was the son of the late Theron A. Hayes and Margaret V. Hayes of Blue Jay.

Fred was a member of Crow Baptist Church and had lived most of his life in the Beckley area. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Hayes served from 1958 to 1961. He was a retired salesman for Lance Inc., and a former employee of the Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Hayes was preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis Hayes; a brother, Tommy Hayes; and mother-in-law, Josephine Richmond.

Those left to cherish hs wonderful precious memory are his beloved wife of 48 years, Shirley Ann Hayes; son, Jeffrey W. Hayes; sister, Cathy Fisher and husband, Bob; sister-in-law, Linda Hayes; father-in-law, Jack Richmond; sister-in-law, Sheila Ellis; brother-in-law, Jack Richmond Jr. and wife, Linda; nephew, Randy Redus and wife, Karen; niece, Vicki Martinez and husband, Lupe; nephew, Kevin Redus and wife, Michelle; nephew, Rusty Hayes; niece, Theresa Whittaker and husband, G.W.; nephew, David Richmond and wife, Tami; special cousin, Cheryl Williams and husband, Jim; six great-nieces; five great-nephews; one great-great-niece and one great-great-nephew.

Greatly loved and admired by all, Fred will be deeply missed by numerous caring relatives and cousins, Pastor Dennis Burks and wife, Pat, members of Crow Baptist Church, many lifelong friends of Blue Jay, Pastor Betty Lusk, abundant friends from Leisure Lanes, members of the Senior Bowling League, several thoughtful compassionate neighbors and his loyal companion, “Scooby”.

Service wil be noon Saturday, May 10, at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Dennis Burks officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 9, at the funeral home.

CHELYAN — Pauline G. Hodge, 80, of Chelyan, died Monday, May 5, 2008, in Goshen, Ind., at the home of her daughter, Linda Grounds, after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe, her parents, Arthur and Edna Rollins Stover, and brothers, Burnette and Samuel Stover.

She is survived by her son Lonnie (Lynn) Hodge of Brownsville, Tenn.; daughters, Linda Grounds of Goshen and Delphia (David) Falin of Chesapeake; a brother, Paul (Peggy) Stover of Smyrna, Del.; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

She was a Mom Maw to many. She was loved and will be missed.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 9, at Pryor Funeral Home, East Bank.

BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio — Eddie Joe Lambert, 63, formerly of Midway, passed away Monday, May 5, 2008, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.

Born Nov. 24, 1944, he was the son of the late William Blaine and Lorain Quesenbury Lambert.

Known by family and friends as Joe, he enjoyed watching History Channels, sitting on the porch watching birds and playing with the family pet. He also liked to try new foods. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Edward Lambert; sister, Margaret Sue Ashby; and four brothers-in-law, Charles Beauford Ashby, Phillip Utt, Bob Milleson and Henry Milleson.

Those left to cherish his memory include four sisters, Brenda Weikle and husband, Robert, of Bellefontaine, Shelby Baker and husband, Jimmy, of Middleburg, Ohio, Gladys Milleson of Gibsonburg, Ohio, and Fayleen Utt of Beaver; two brothers, Johnny Lambert and wife, Betty, of Jefferson, Ohio, and William Lambert and wife Ann, of Sophia; and many nieces and nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, May 9, at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, with nephew Kenneth Lambert officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Ann B. Coburn Lane





Ann B. Lane, 61, of Cool Ridge, lost her courageous battle with cancer on Monday, May 5, 2008 at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born Sept. 24, 1946, in Pettry, she was the daughter of the late Darrell Coburn and Dora White Coburn.

Ann was dedicated to the Ghent Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years, and was an EMT for 12 years. She was an exceptional cook and gardener, but most of all she loved spending time helping other people.

Other than her father, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Elsie and Noah White; paternal grandparents, Arthur and Ethel Coburn; and a grandson, Jason Propps Lane.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 47 years, Mason Lane; her mother, Dora Coburn; three sons, Terry Lane of Cool Ridge, Rick and wife, Kim Lane, of Cool Ridge and Mike and wife, Karen Lane, of Midland, N.C.; grandchildren, Robert Lane and fiancé, Jess Hall, Jo Jo Wilson, Cecil Barrier and Annette Barrier; great-grandchildren, Michael and Jeremy Trull; aunts, Wanda Quesenberry and her husband, Drexel, of Springfield, Pa., and Lura Elmore and her son, Wade, of Princeton; other aunts and uncles; 18 nieces and nephews; 27 great-nieces and nephews; brothers and sisters, Jessie and Linda Coburn of Riverside, N.J., Wayne and Jerri Coburn of Ghent, Kenny and Lillie Coburn of Cool Ridge, Barbara and Keith Lilly of Cool Ridge, Arlene and Rick Akers of York, S.C., and Gary Coburn of Cool Ridge; special friends, Terri Dawn and her daughter, Emily; and other special friends, Ellen, Cora, Mary Sue and Errol, Nellie, Kenneth and Ruby, Bob and Carol, Jim and Sue, Barb and Jim and many more.

Service will be 3 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Shady Spring, with Pastor Delmas Wolfe officiating. Visitation will be one hour before service. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jimmy Coleman, David French, Russell Shrewsberry, Dwight Shrewsberry, Scott Wilburn, James Belcher and John Akers. Honorary pallbearers are Ray Adkins, Rick Morrison, Ray Coleman, Eddie Matherly, Jethro Walker and Dr. Pittsenbarger.

Following the committal, a reception in Ann’s honor will be held at the Ghent Volunteer Fire Department in Ghent.

Samuel Burton Mann





Samuel Burton Mann, 81, a 51-year resident of Lewisburg, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at University Hospital in Charlottesville, Va.

Mr. Mann was born June 4, 1926, in Renick, and graduated from Renick High School. He attended West Virginia Institute of Technology on an athletic scholarship where he lettered in basketball and football. He received a master’s degree from West Virginia University in rehabilitation counseling.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James F. Mann Sr. and Cline Christie Mann; his wife of 42 years, Kathryn Louise Poole Mann; brother, Dr. James F. Mann, Jr.; and sister, Mary Christie Mann Zinn.

Mr. Mann served in the U.S. Army during World War II. A school teacher and coach prior to his 37-year career with vocational rehabilitation, he began work as a field counselor and later served as district supervisor for the West Virginia Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. Through his work, Mr. Mann worked to improve the quality of life for citizens who had to overcome physical, intellectual or emotional barriers to employment. An avid golfer, he enjoyed a post-retirement position as a golf ranger for nine years at The Greenbrier resort.

He was a long-term member of Lewisburg United Methodist Church, National and West Virginia Rehabilitation Associations, Lewisburg Lodge No. 1758 of BPOE and Greenbrier Valley Elks Country Club. He served as past chairman of the Southeastern Regional Workshops, Board of Directors of LUMC, and especially enjoyed his terms as Exalted Ruler of Local No. 1758 BPOE and district deputy grand exalted ruler for the Elks.

Mr. Mann is survived by his wife of 18 years, Phyllis Livesay McWhorter Mann; daughter, Christie Mann Finn and her husband, Mike, of Greensboro, N.C.; Dr. Thomas F. Mann of Lewisburg; and granddaughter, Kelly Kathryn Finn of Greensboro.

There will be a private family internment at the mausoleum at Rosewood Cemetery prior to a memorial service at 2 p.m. Friday, May 9, at Lewisburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Joseph Kenaston officiating. A reception will follow the memorial service in the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifting to Hospice Care Inc, 540 N. Jefferson St., Lewisburg, W.Va., 24901 in memory of this delightful man.

HINTON — Ms. Kathryn Saunders Rogers, 95, of Hinton, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at Summers County A.R.H. in Hinton.

She was born Oct. 26, 1912, at Forest Hill, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Nan Mann Saunders.

She was a homemaker all of her married life. She was a very active 4-H leader, as well as a Sunday School teacher well into her nineties. She was a faithful choir member, but most of all, she will be remembered for her lasting legacy of faith. She was the oldest living member of Fairview Baptist Church at Forest Hill, W.Va.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mark Rogers, in 2002. Also preceding her in death were ten brothers and sisters; Garland Saunders, Elah Fickley, Delma Hutchison, Mabel Farrell, Reba Milburn, Wayne Saunders, Arlene Cottle, Joe Saunders, Earnest Saunders and June Martel.

Survivors include two sons, Neil and wife, Helen Rogers, of Bloomington, Ind., and Ted and wife, Susan Rogers, of Hinton; seven grandchildren; Stephanie Fantuzzo and husband, Don, of Kokomo, Ind., Jennifer Nicholson and husband, Dave, of Noblesville, Ind., Allison Gallo and husband, Mark, of Indianapolis, Ind., Mark Rogers and wife, Bridget, of Fishers, Ind., Doug Rogers and wife, Kim, of Charlotte, N.C., Greg Rogers and wife, Lori, of Hinton and Jan Crouthamel and husband, Tom, of Madison, Va.; five step-grandchildren, Jennifer Riggleman and husband, Phil, of Elkins, W.Va., Meg Hodge of Statesville, N.C., Sara Kane and husband, Jim, of Chicago, Ill., Kevin Brown and wife, Jennifer, of Indianapolis, Ind., and Jade and Louisa Brown of Seattle, Wash.; thirty-three great-grandchildren, and one sister, Sue Healey of Philadelphia, Pa.

Bessie Violet Whittaker, 90, died Wednesday morning, May 7, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House following a short illness.

Born at Pluto on July 28, 1917, she was the daughter of the late John R. and Izora Plumley Bennett.

She lived most of her adult life at Jumping Branch.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe A. Whittaker, and a grandson, Joseph Ray Wood. In addition to two infant brothers, she was also preceded in death by brothers, Jessie, Okley, Davie and Arlo Bennett; and sisters, Nona Furrow and Eva Miller. She was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Dianna Vest Whittaker.

Mrs. Whittaker is survived by three children, George Whittaker and wife, Rebecca, of Jacksonville, Fla., Eva Ann Wood and husband, Darrell, of Charlotte, N.C., with whom she had made her home for the last several years, and Zoretta Quesenberry and husband, Ivan, of Beckley; grandsons, George “G.W.” Whittaker II, Daniel and Matthew Quesenberry, great=grandchildren, Jacob Ray Wood, Nancy Marie and Violet Grace Quesenberry, and Preslei Morgan Whittaker; sister, Ocie Adkins of Cool Ridge; and three sisters-in-law.

Mrs. Whittaker was a homemaker, loved gardening and cooking for her family or anyone who happened to stop in for a visit.

Mrs. Whittaker was a member of Landmark Baptist Church in Charlotte.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, May 9, at Jumping Branch Gospel Tabernacle with Elder Tommy Pack and Pastor Elmo Alderman officiating.

Friends may gather with the family noon until time of the service at the church.

Burial will be at Quesenberry Cemetery, Jumping Branch. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
