Clifford William ‘Bunk’ Carr
RAINELLE — Clifford William “Bunk” Carr, 86, of Lilly Park, Rainelle, passed away late Thursday night, May 1, 2008, at St. Francis Hospital, Charleston, following a long illness.
Born April 8, 1922, at Landisburg, he was the son of the late Alpheus C. and Virgie M. Lewis Carr.
Bunk was a retired coal miner and carpenter.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Cecil, Grady and Carol “Boodle” Carr; three half brothers, Den, Vess and Carrie Carr; and a sister, Shirley White.
Bunk was a Jehovah’s Witness and witnessed to everyone he saw. He loved hunting, fishing and carpentry. But most of all, he loved music, and was a talented musician who could play any musical instrument by ear. He enjoyed singing and playing his accordion, piano and keyboard. Bunk was especially proud of his grandchildren whom he loved with all his heart.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Betty June Nutter Carr; seven children, Belinda J. Hylton and husband, Howard, of Mount Lookout, Greg C. Carr and wife, Joyce, of Mount Lookout, Zackary D. Carr and wife, Joyce, of Rainelle, Cindy G. Rudd and husband, Charles, of Freeport, Texas, Jeffrey E. Carr and wife, Beth, of Rainelle, Sheila L. Robinson and husband, William, of Rainelle, and Tangela L. Arnett and husband, Danny, of Rainelle; 15 grandchildren, Clifford Hylton, Shane and wife, Janette Hylton, and Callie Hylton of Mount Lookout, Greg Carr and wife, Amanda, Melanie Perdue and husband, Adam, of Mount Lookout, Brielle and Abbaney Carr of Rainelle, Charles, Seth and Aaron Rudd of Freeport, Texas, Cara E. Carr of Rainelle, Levi and Sydney Robinson of Rainelle, and Julian and Caitlyn Arnett of Rainelle; two great-grandchildren, Makayla Isabella Carr and Brandon Scott Perdue, both of Mount Lookout; two sisters, Chilla V. Carr of Lilly Park, Rainelle, and Isabelle Bass of Melbourne, Fla.; and three special nephews and niece, Curtis Cutlip, Michael Carr and Kristy Walker.
Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at Wallace and Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with William Robinson officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Billy Ray Faulkner
PETERSTOWN — Billy Ray Faulkner, 77, of Peterstown, passed away Friday, May 2, 2008.
In keeping with Mr. Faulkner’s wishes, he was cremated. Memorial visitation will be 5 to 6 p.m. Monday, May 5, at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown.

William H. ‘Bill’ Fortner
FLORENCE, Ala. — William H. “Bill” Fortner, 70, formerly of the Glen Daniel area, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008, in Florence.
Born Aug. 9, 1937, in Beckley, he was the son of the late James and Wanda Walker Fortner. He was also preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Nannie Walker.
Bill was of the Christian faith.
He is survived by his son, Thomas Fortner, a daughter, Wanda Simpson, and his first wife, Pamela Webster, all of Surveyor; daughters, Stephanie Barker of Athens and Susan Richardson of Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Melinda, Amber, Heather, Amanda, Ryan, Matthew and McKenzie; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Ashley and Ryder; a brother, Tommy of Alabama; a sister, Barbara of Michigan; and cousins, Larry and Bobby, both of Alabama, and Rick of Beckley.
Bill retired in 1977 after 22 years in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard. He was a gunners mate. He joined the Navy in 1954 and was on the scene for the recovery of John Glenn in 1964. During the late ’60s and ’70s he was an instructor in the 5-inch gun and other ordnance at the USCG Training Center GINY. He spent his last six years in Portsmouth, Va., on the Coast Guard Cutter Ingham and two years in charge of the armory on base.
Bill was proud of his military service. He was always patriotic and supported his country.
Bill was carried to his earthly resting place where he received full military honors. Service was 3 p.m. Thursday, March 27, at Shackelford Chapel, Collinwood, Tenn., with David Ruslow and Wes Gurley officiating. The flag ceremony was conducted by active duty members of the USCG. “Taps” and gun salute by the U.S. Marine Corps. Interment was at Railroad Cemetery, Iron City, Tenn.
William Lacy ‘Bill’ Garten
HINTON — William Lacy “Bill” Garten, 79, of Hinton, died Friday morning, May 2, 2008, at Summers County-ARH in Hinton following a lengthy illness.
Born June 9, 1928, at Gar-ten, Fayette County, he was the son of the late Lacy A. and Randolph Myers Garten.
Mr. Garten was a 1945 graduate of Fayetteville High School, lettering in football, basketball, and track. He participated in the 1945 North-South football game. He was awarded a basketball scholarship by West Virginia University and attended the school until transferring to Concord College in 1946. He lettered in football, basketball and baseball at Concord and was selected All-Conference in football in 1949. In 1950, Bill signed a baseball contract with the Chicago Cubs and played in the Appalachian and Western Carolina Leagues. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952 and served his country in the Korean Conflict. Upon his release in 1954, he started his teaching career at Hinton High School and was assistant football coach and head basketball and baseball coach at Hinton from 1955-1956. In 1957 he was named head football, basketball and baseball coach. He also served as track coach for two years. His accomplishments as football coach consisted of leading the Bobcats to the state finals in 1963, losing to Ceredo-Kenova, winning the state class AA football championship in 1968 and defeating Oceana 9-0. He retired as football coach after the 1978 season. He taught social studies and physical education for 30 years at Hinton High, retiring in 1985. His impact and guidance on young student athletes was immeasurable. In 2002, Summers County High School, which succeeded Hinton High School, renamed their football stadium Garten Stadium in honor of Coach Garten.
He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting grouse, turkey and deer. He also enjoyed fishing for trout, bass and channel cats. He was a member of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, being past exalted ruler, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Willow Wood Country Club and the Retired Teachers Association. Bill was also a member of Hinton First Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elaine Bradley Garten; a son, Bill and wife, Luci Garten, of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Sally Garten of Barger Springs; and a granddaughter, Lacy Garten.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, at First Presbyterian Church, Hinton, with the Rev. Dr. Barbara Romfo officiating. Private interment will be in Restwood Memorial Gardens, Hinton.
There will be no visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the William Garten Scholarship Fund, c/o City National Bank in Hinton.

Julia Ellen Honaker
FRIAR’S HILL — Julia Ellen Honaker, 85, of Friar’s Hilll, passed away Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea.
Born Sept. 2, 1922, at Sophia, she was the daughter of the late Jess and Beulah Jessup Daniel.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Honaker; an infant son, George Edward Honker; sisters, Cynthia and Nancy Daniel, and Mary Manning; and a brother, Lindberg Daniel.
Mrs. Honker was of the Baptist faith and attended Trout Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Lennie Banton and husband, Bobby, of Lewisburg; two sons, Harry Honker and wife, Lola, of Frankford and David Honaker and wife, Pearl, of White Sulphur Springs; two stepsons, Rudy Honaker of Liberty Center, Ohio, and Roger Honaker of Napoleon, Ohio; grandchildren, Jimmy Banton, Julie Banton, Tina Brownell, Tracy Honaker, Jimmy, Steven and Timmy Riffle, Belinda Arbogast and Donna Smith; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Winona Quesenberry and Jim of Beckley and Nellie Anderson and Ferrell of Fairlea; and five brothers, Cody Daniel, Terry Daniel and Brenda, Dennis Daniel and Dee, George Daniel and Janice, and Leslie Daniel and Linda, all of Fairdale.
Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at Morgan Funeral Home, Lewisburg, with the Rev. Roger Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Morningside Cemetery, Renick.
The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Charlie Richmond, Carlos Manning, Jimmy Banton, Michael Blankenship, Timmy Riffle and Craig Daniel.

James ‘Jim’ Kasholo
LEIVASY — James “Jim” Kasholo, 88, of Leivasy, passed away late Thursday night, May 1, 2008, at Heartland of Rainelle following a short illness.
Born Sept. 27, 1919, at Gary, Ind., he was the son of the late Michael and Bertha Given Kasholo.
Jim was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. He was a retired coal miner and an ordained minister of Apostolic faith.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Delsie Long Kasholo; his second wife, Reva Bennett Kasholo; two sisters, Frances Foster and Eileen Mansfield; and three brothers, Ernest, Frank and Roy Kasholo.
Survivors include three daughters, Retha Hinton of Leivasy, Diane Lilly and Shirley Kashola of Leivasy; two sisters, Angeline Zarnick of Wyandotte, Mich., and Vivian Stein of Clyde, N.Y.; a brother, Tommy Kosholo of Coos Bay, Ore.; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Service will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, at Wallace and Wallace Chapel, Rainelle. Burial will follow at West Virginia Memorial Gardens, Calvin.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Clacy ‘Daniel’ Reed
Clacy “Daniel” Reed, 75, of Rhodell, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 2, 2008.
Born July 15, 1932, he was the son of the late Sebird and Mary Reed.
Daniel was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a former coal miner and bus operator, and retired as a mechanic from Raleigh County Transportation. Daniel was a loving husband and Dad, a friend to all, and loved by everyone who knew him. His light and love will shine on through us.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Jean and Daisy Reed and Faye Norman; and three brothers, Arlie, Byrl and Clyde Reed.
Daniel is survived by his wife of 50-plus years, Ruby Reed; five children, Dorine and Colen, both at home, and Wilma Reed and her husband Jimmy, Lesa Lilly and her husband, Kenny, and Daniel Lynn Reed and his wife, Jennie, all of Rhodell; three grandchildren, Alicia, Sherman and Steve; two stepgrandchildren, Brandon and Walter; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Alex; three brothers, his twin Lacy David Reed, Charles Reed and Basil Reed and his wife, Jenny, and a sister, Helen Johnson, all of Amigo; sister-in-law, Gladys Reed of Pemberton; brothers- and sisters-in-law whom he loved dearly, Randall, Jack, Ronnie, Robert, Rema and Rita; and an abundance of nieces and nephews who will carry his love in their hearts.
Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Revs. Don Bell and Arnold Leach officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Dennis and Gary Norman, Stoney Reed, Randy Reed, David Bishop II and Steven DeShazer.

RENICK — Winfred Lee Stover, 80, of Renick, formerly of Clear Creek, went home to meet the Lord on Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center.
Born June 3, 1927, he was the son of the late Basil and Orpha Williams Stover.
Winfred was a retired coal miner and was a graduate of Clear Fork High School.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Denise; a great-granddaughter, Shaila Denice Callison; six brothers, Gary, Basil Jr., Jackie, Blaine, Keith and Roy Stover; and a sister, Betty Hagy.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, JoAnn Hager Stover; two daughters, Myra Boggs of Maxwelton and Shelia Stover of Williamsburg; a son, Aaron Stover of Renick; two granddaughters, Shania Boggs of Maxwelton and Romney Callison of Salem; a great-grandson, Richard Gray Howard of Salem; a sister, Agnes Stover Tote of Bluefield; and a brother, Kermit Stover of Lindside.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no service.

Amanda Jo Thombs, infant daughter of Kathy Thombs, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital.
Survivors, other than her mother, are two sisters, Alexus and Gabreila Thombs at home; maternal grandparents, Frank and Virginia Bragg of Hico; and several aunts and uncles.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. today, May 4, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel, Ansted, with Pastor Kenny Hayes officiating. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

June Marie Whitlow, 76, of Ghent, died Friday, May 2, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington following a long illness.
Born April 21, 1932, at Eskdale, she was the daughter of the late Elmer Bowyer and Dixie Moore Bowyer.
Mrs. Whitlow was a retired beautician and a member of Westview Missionary Baptist Church at Odd.
She was preceded in death by a brother, James Lewis Bowyer.
Survivors include her husband, Clarence Glen Whitlow; sons, Clarence Glen Whitlow Jr. of Ghent, Thomas Lee Whitlow and wife, Margaret, of Ghent, John Albert Whitlow of Sharon and Thomas Jeffrey Whitlow of Ghent; a daughter, Debra Blackwell and husband, Rodney, of Monticello, Miss.; brothers, Bill Bowyer of Sharon and Jack Bowyer of Madison; grandchildren, Amy, Jason, Charlie, Steven, Ashley and Jimmy; great-grandchildren, Veronica, Vanessa and Braxton; and special niece and caregiver, Linda Pauley.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Westview Missionary Baptist Church, Odd, with the Rev. Paul Holstein officiating. Burial will follow at Ashworth Cemetery, Ghent.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Shady Spring Chapel, and one hour before service at the church.
