Barbara Lou Aleshire
GAHANNA, Ohio — Barbara Lou Aleshire, 73, formerly of Fairlea, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Mount Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
Ms. Aleshire was born Feb. 27, 1935, at Ronceverte to the late Charles Francis and Edith Catherine Loomis.
Ms. Aleshire was a children’s caregiver, past president of Stygler Village Residents Association in Gahanna, and was a member of Liberty House of Praise, now called River of Life Family Church.
She enjoyed evenings playing board games with friends and family. She will be sadly missed by many loving friends.
Survivors include two daughters, Donna Simmons and husband, Paul, of Gahanna and Cindy Gawthrop and husband, Steve, of Beckley; a son, Don Griffith of Richmond, Va.; and three granddaughters, Robin Branch and husband, Patrick, of Marshville, N.C., Renee Griffith of Summersville and Erin Simmons of Gahanna.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg, with the Rev. Gary Walker officiating. Burial will follow at Greenbrier Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Lonnie E. Compton
MARIANNA — Lonnie E. Compton, 75, of Marianna, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House following a short illness.
He was born June 2, 1932, in Pikeville, Ky., to the late King and Warena Justice Compton.
Mr. Compton was a retired coal miner and a member of Mill Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Madgeline Hall Compton; a great-grandson, Stevie Strickland; four brothers, Lester, Junior and James Compton, and Evert McKinney; and a sister, Vicie Elkins.
Survivors include three sons, Paul Compton and his wife, Rhonda, Michael Compton and his wife, Frankie, and Larry Compton and his wife, Pam, all of Glover; a daughter, Paula Blankenship and her husband, Randy, of Marianna; a brother, Arnold Compton of North Carolina; a sister, Dorothy Dale of Virginia; eight grandchildren, Paul and Trina Compton, Lea, Rose, Mike, Madge and Eva Compton, and Brandon Compton; a very special grandson, Caleb Blankenship; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pine-ville, with the Rev. Richie Walker officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.
The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

HINTON — William L. “Bill” Garten, 79, died at 1 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2008, at Summers County-ARH Hospital following a long illness.

Lillie Mae Roberts Hickman
Lillie Mae Roberts Hickman, a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, lived a beautiful life under the grace of the Heavenly Father. The daughter of the late George and Sarah Roberts was born July 28, 1920, in Mount Airy, N.C. She departed life Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at Southern Maryland Hospital Center in Clinton, Md.
Mrs. Hickman was united in marriage to Charlie Gray Hickman on March 14, 1940, in Mount Airy. She moved to Stotesbury in 1942. They moved to Beckley in 1965.
She joined the church at an early age in Mount Airy and was a faithful member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and usher board in Beckley until her illness in 1999.
She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers, Allen, Coy, Marvin and Claymon; and sister, Anna Graham.
She is survived by her four daughters, Mrs. Anna Mae Shelton (Donald) of Roosevelt, Long Island, N.Y., Mrs. Betty Fralin (Earl, deceased) of Forestville, Md., Mrs. Blanch Moose (George) of Fort Washington, Md., and Ms. Magdaline Hairston of Alexandria, Va.; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 142 Mool Ave., Beckley, with the Rev. Jerry Staples officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call one hour before service at the church.

Roland Nelson Massey Sr.
OAK HILL — Roland Nelson Massey Sr., 74, died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at his residence following an apparent heart attack.
Born May 27, 1933, at Burnwell, he was the son of the late John Earley and Clara Ellen Scarbro Massey.
Mr. Massey formerly worked for Republic Steel in Ohio, and later at Long-Airdox in Oak Hill. He was of the Protestant faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Wandra Lou Jenkins.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda May Roberts Massey; a son, Roland Nelson Massey Jr. of Oak Hill; his four daughters, Rebecca May Toombs of Oak Hill, Deborah Lynn Massey of Fayette-ville and Sharon Kay Massey and Rita Ann Massey, both of Oak Hill; his brother, Jerry John Massey of Scarbro; his three sisters, Annie Belma Sumpter of Scarbro, Mae Eloise Stone of Mount Hope and Ina Pearl Mannings of Scarbro; 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a great-grandchild yet to be born.
Service will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Ralph Candler officiating.
Friends may call one hour before service Sunday at the funeral home.

Sgt. Zane L Mills II
KINGWOOD — Sgt. Zane L Mills II, 25, of Kingwood, died suddenly Thursday, May 1, 2008, at his home.
Born July 21, 1982, at Hinton, he was the son of Mary Darlene Cannon-Lee and husband, Terry, of Kingwood and Zane L Mills and wife, Debbie G., of Cool Ridge.
Sgt. Mills was currently serving with the State of West Virginia Camp Dawson Security Force at Kingwood.
He had recently served with Company C 1st of the 150th (AVN UNIT MAINT) GB in Iraq from July 23, 2006, through July 22, 2007. His awards and decorations included Air Medal (2nd Award), Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal W/M Device and Aircraft Crewman Badge.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Gene Lee Mills, and his maternal grandfather, Robert Bauer.
Surviving, besides his parents, are his wife, Jessica J. Mills of Jumping Branch; his daughter, Jada K Mills of Jumping Branch; paternal grandmother, Doris Mills of Brooks; maternal grandmother, Wilma Bernadean Bauer of Hinton; five sisters, Teeya M. Mills of Athens, Ohio, Emma L. Mills of Kingwood, Jamie R. Martin of Walker, Johnna R. Smith of Little Hocking, Ohio, and Angie D. Ellison of Cool Ridge; and a brother, Brian R. Ellison of Cool Ridge.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with Elders Keith Mills, Joey Blevins and Ronnie Mills officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral parlors.
Pallbearers will be Damon Mills, Davy Mills, Raf Jackson, Logan Pentasuglia, Kenny Dunn and William Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be James Yancey and Jonah Pentasuglia.
Military graveside honors will be provided by the West Virginia Military Honor Guard.

Spc. William Shane Redden
Our sweet and courageous son, grandson, brother and neph-ew, Spc. William Shane Redden, rode his earthly bike one more time to meet his precious and loving God on April 27, 2008.
His journey began Nov. 8, 1984, in the arms of his loving parents, William “Willie” and Elisa Pate Redden.
He was a 2003 graduate of Shady Spring High School and attended New Life Baptist Church in White Oak.
Mr. Redden served in the U.S. Army from May 7, 2003, to May 6, 2006. He first served as a line medic with the Armored Division in South Korea. He then served as a Special Forces combat medic with the Armored Division in Ramada, Iraq. His accomplishments included the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Medical Badge and the Iraq Campaign Medal.
Our Shane was preceded in death by his maternal mamma, Margie Pate; his paternal grandparents, Oral and Louise Redden; his soul mate, Terrie Gilkerson; and several cousins, aunts and uncles.
Those left to cherish his wonderful memory are his maternal grandparents, Jack and Drema Pate; brothers, W.M. Travis Redden and wife, Holly, and W.M. Joshua Redden; aunts, Mrs. Frank “Sherrie” Sanders and Mrs. Robert “Beatrice” O’Dell; uncles, Rex Redden and his wife, Kathy, and Frankie Redden; stepuncle, Jeff Whisman; and many great-aunts, uncles, cousins and a very special stepniece and his biggest fan, Brittany Whisman.
A celebration of Shane’s life will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Shady Spring, with the Pastor Rodney Allen officiating.
Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
He will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley, where military rites will be conducted.
Pallbearers will be Derrick Lester, Eric Randolph, John Akers, Frankie Sanders, Ping Jereza, Paul Ollila, Scotty Harris, Matt Creager and Matt Moore.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to New Life Baptist Church, P.O. Box 229, White Oak, WV 25989, in Shane’s memory.

Jimmie Ray Smith
LOOKOUT — Jimmie Ray Smith, 56, of Lookout, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.
Born May 30, 1951, he was the son of the late James Floyd and Mamie Ritter Smith.
Jimmie was an avid reader and enjoyed pitching horseshoes. He attended the Church of God Prophecy. He was a truck driver for Beckley Garbage Disposal Inc. for 20 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Pete Smith and Mickey Smith; and a sister, Mary Smith.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Donna Jean Ritter Smith; four sons, Little Jimmie Smith of California, Michael Ritter of Lookout, Farmer Ritter of Beckley and Steven Smith of Beckley; a daughter, Desiree Smith of Georgia; four grandchildren; a brother, John William Smith of Chicago, Ill.; and two sisters, Della Burrows of Montana and Peggy Wooten of North Carolina.
Service will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Forest Gray officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
Eugene, Brian, Marvin, David, Brian and Mike will serve as pallbearers.

Margie Zenith Lafferty Tyree
Margie Zenith Lafferty Tyree, 96, of Beckley, died Monday, April 28, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.
Born July 27, 1911, at Willis Branch, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Rosa M. Williams Lafferty.
Mrs. Tyree was a member of Mabscott Christian Baptist Church and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tennis A. Tyree; a son, Jack Tyree; and two infant children. Margie was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by seven brothers, Everett, Dillian, Troy, Winton, James, Denny and Eugene Lafferty, and three sisters, Mabel Feazelle, Lillian Woolwine and Dixie Pennington.
Survivors include a son, William “Bill” Tyree and wife, Ellen, of Rockville, Md.; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Tyree of Mount Holly, N.C.; six grandchildren, Timothy Tyree and wife, Connie, of Beckley, Scott Tyree and wife, Evonka, of Mount Holly, Kelli Tilston and husband, Mike, of Katy, Texas, Chris Tyree and wife, Julia, of Clute, Texas, Michael Tyree of Rockville and Kylen Johnson of Clarksburg, Md.; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, with the Rev. Harmon Davis officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
