MOUNT HOPE — Jesse Allan Breeden, 55, formerly of Hilltop, died Monday, April 23, 2007, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Beckley.

Survivors include a brother, Donald Breeden of Lester; and two sisters, Karen Stevens of Connecticut and Sherry Pisher of West Columbia.

According to his wishes, Jesse was cremated. There will be no service.

Jerry Paul Newton Carter



DIAMOND — Jerry Paul Newton Carter, 57, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2007, at his residence after a short illness, surrounded by his family.

He was born Sept. 6, 1949, at Welch, a son of the late Charlie and Mary Blankenship Carter.

Jerry was the owner and operator of Big J Trucking Co., Diamond, and was a U.S. Navy veteran during the Vietnam era. He was a member of the Belle VFW post and worked in the coal mines at Welch for Cannelton Coal Co.

Jerry loved to go hunting and boating, was a big NASCAR fan and always enjoyed four-wheeling with his family.

Along with his parents, his brother, Ronnie Carter, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his son, Phillip Paul Carter and Erin Sagady of Bluefield; his granddaughter, Cianna Brynn Carter of Bluefield; his daughter and son-in-law, Gerri Lucille ‘Gigi” and Chris Austin of Bluefield, Va.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Betty Carter of Beckley, Donald and Patricia “Shan” Carter of Montcalm, and Larry and Vanessa Carter of Princeton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and Roger Cooper of Chesapeake, Emogene and Sonny Brown of Shrewsbury, Faye and Jimmy Predrero of New Jersey, and Beatrice and Charles “Chuck” Homan of North Carolina.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home, Malden, with the Rev. Anthony “Moe” Carter officiating. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluewell, with military rites.

Family and friends will gather for the visitation from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Charles Norman Cole



Charles Norman Cole, 82, of Coal City, died Friday, April 20, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.

Born in White Top, Va., on March 10, 1925, he was the son of the late David Arthur Cole and Sarah J. Gambill Cole.

Mr. Cole was a disabled coal miner, a member of the UMWA, and was a U.S. Army Korean Conflict veteran. During his service to his country he received the Bronze Star.

Mr. Cole was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dvid Allen Cole; four sisters; and four brothers.

Survivors include sons, Gary Dale Cole and wife, Mary, of Coal City and Timothy Cole and wife, BeBe, of Sylvester; two brothers, Ralph Cole and wife, Myra, of Beckley and Albert Cole and wife, Ann, of Daniels; a sister-in-law, Willie Mae Cole of Daniels; eight grandchildren; April Treadway and husband, David, Sarah Jo Cole, Amanda K. Cole, Zachary Norman Cole, Niki Vaughn, Jennifer Cole, Michael Alton Cole and David Allen Cole Jr.; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Bart Elkins officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

OAK HILL — Richard Wayne Dougherty, 68, of Oak Hill, passed away Monday, April 23, 2007, at Hidden Valley Care Center.

Oliver C. Harper Jr.



Oliver C. Harper Jr., 72, of Beckley, died Sunday, April 22, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born May 8, 1934, in the Calloway Heights community of Beckley, he was the son of the late Oliver C. Harper and Ada Glover Harper.

A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1952, Oliver was the right tackle on Jerome VanMeter’s football team during the era when Beckley became known as the “City of Champions.”

He taught at Beckley Junior High School for 23 years and was in the nursery and landscaping business in Beckley for many years.

Oliver received a B.S. degree from West Virginia Tech and an M.S. degree in education from West Virginia University.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Shirley Hawks Harper.

Oliver is survived by a son, Douglas W. Harper and daughter-in-law, Shelley Harper, of Beckley; a daughter, Judy H. Thomas and son-in-law, Hayes N. Thomas Jr., of Fort Mill, S.C.; and four grandchildren, Erin Michele Harper, Douglas Oliver Harper, Allyson Elizabeth Thomas, and Hayes Napier Thomas III.

Oliver is also survived by two brothers, Alfred Harper of Beckley and Joe Harper of Delaware, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley.

Private graveside service will be held in Monroe County at the Harper Family Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Dr., Beckley, WV 25801, in memory of Mr. Harper.

Barbie Jean Hiles Hatcher



Barbie Jean Hiles Hatcher, 29, of Glen Daniel, departed this earthly life on April 21, 2007, after a short illness.

She was born Nov. 1, 1977, to Jerry and Lorintha Hendricks Hiles of Orgas. She was the granddaughter of the late Newton and Anagene Hendricks and Luther and Gracie Hiles.

She was a Baptist by faith and formerly attended White Oak Freewill Baptist Church at Orgas.

She graduated from Sherman High School and Mountain State University and was a substitute teacher for the Raleigh County Board of Education.

She was a loving wife, mother, daughter and sister.

Survivors include her husband of 11 years, William Hatcher; a son, Daton, and daughter, Daisy. She is also survived by her parents; sister, Deanna Hiles, and brother, Jerry Hiles Jr. She also leaves behind a host of family and friends to mourn her passing.

“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known” 1 Corinthians 13:12.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Valley Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. Ronald Santonio officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas.

Friends may call one half hour before service Thursday at the funeral home.

Bessie Cole Osborne



NETTIE — Bessie Cole Osborne, 94, died Monday, April 23, 2007, at home after a long illness.

Born on Christmas Day 1912 at Snow Hill, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Russie Childers Cole.

Mrs. Osborne was retired from B.F. Goodrich in Richwood, and she was the oldest living member of Olive Branch Baptist Church at Nettie. She was also an active member of the Nettie-Leivasy Senior Citizens. She loved to grow flowers and was an avid quilter.

She was beloved by many and will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Osborne; two infant children; and two brothers, Junior and Roy Cole.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Bill James of Radcliff, Ky.; her son and daughter-in-law, Howard and Pearl Osborne of Nettie; her son and daughter-in-law, James and Janice Osborne of East Liverpool, Ohio; three sisters, Louise O’Dell and Madeline Fields, both of Nettie, and Vivian Jenkins of Staunton, Va.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Olive Branch Baptist Church, Nettie, with Pastors Stuart Stover and Larry Gawthrop officiating. Burial will follow in Fields Cemetery, Nettie.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the church.

The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial donations be made to Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Ave., Dunbar, WV 25064.

Lige H. “Sarge” Sergent Jr., 82, of Beckley, died Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at Bowers Hospice House.

Born July 7, 1924, in Hazard, Ky., he was the son of the late Lige H. and Sudie Mae Smith Sergent Sr.

Lige was a former employee of Ranger Fuel and Slab Fork Coal. He was a member of Falling River Baptist Church at Brookneal, Va., and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Leona Mae Justice Sergent; a son, Gregory S. Chambers; and his second wife, Mary Elizabeth Turner Sergent.

Survivors include two sons, Gary E. Sergent and wife, Jeanne, of Richlands, Va. and Richard G. Sergent and wife, Sandy, of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; a daughter, Tammy Lewis of Lynchburg; two brothers, Eddie Sergent and wife, Wanda, of Ripley and Bill Sergent and his wife, Dora Lee, of Beckley; 13 grandchildren, Austin Ervin, Courtney Lewis, Hailie Lewis, Scotty Chambers, Beth Chambers, Gary Lee Sergent, Kimberly Sergent, Lindsey Sergent, Samantha Sergent, Christopher Sergent, Joshua Sergent, Joseph Johnson and Charlie Johnson; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Bill Parker officiating.

Friends may call noon until time of service Thursday at the funeral home.

Following the service in Beckley, Mr. Sergent will be taken to Oak View Presbyterian Church in Charlotte County, Va., where a service will be 2 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Roberta Kidd officiating. Burial will follow in White Family Cemetery, Charlotte County.

FAYETTEVILLE — Jean Ann Starkey, 53, of Fayetteville, formerly of Dunbar, passed away Friday, April 20, 2007, at the home of her parents.

Jean was born Jan. 28, 1954, a daughter of Norman G. “Jack” and Joyce M. Moles of Dunbar. She was a graduate of Dunbar High School. Jean was employed as a teller supervisor for Bank of Mount Hope. Other than her family, the loves of her life were horses. She was a mem-ber of the WV Quarter Horse Association and American Quarter Horse Association. She also worked with 4-H for many years, instructing young horsemen.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Starkey is survived by her husband, Richard R. Starkey; brother and sister-in-law, Greg and Wanda Moles of Dunbar; niece, Carrie Moles; nephews, Matt Moles and his wife, Heather, of Cross Lanes and Brandon Moles and Micah Moles, both of Dunbar; mother and father-in-law, Ray and Pauline Starkey of Dunbar; brother-in-law, Steve Starkey and his wife, Leslie, of Florida; sisters-in-law, Pam Starkey and JoAnn Hayes and husband, Ralph, all of Hurricane; uncle Jimmie Moles and his wife, Rozella, of Elkview; aunts, Nancy Matson and Tina Chapman, both of St. Petersburg, Fla., Evelyn Mason of Lewisburg, Marilyn Swisher of Hammond, Ind., Shirley Jones of Elkview and Barbara Mason of Brooksville, Fla.; and cousins, Tony Moles, Lynn Douglas Moles and Jimmie Moles, all of Elkview. She is also survived by many, many friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. David VanHorn officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Memorial Park.

Friends called 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ronald Keith Ward, 51, of Glen White, died Monday, April 16, 2007, at his home.

Born Feb. 25, 1956, in Beckley, he was the son of Zelda Mae Whiting Ward Evans of Beckley and the late Ralph Harless Ward.

He was last employed as a commercial painter. Ron was an avid outdoorsman.

A brother, Denvil Todd, preceded him in death.

Survi-vors include a son, Ro-nald Keith Ward II of Glen White; three brothers, Ralph Edward Ward of Crab Orchard, Donald Gene Ward of Ghent and Richard Ward of Glen White; and a sister, Sharon Chiao of Mahony City, Pa.
