Joe Woods Beard
On Tuesday, March 20, 2007, the first day of spring, Joe Woods Beard passed away at his home on Crescent Road following a long illness. He was in his 84th year.
Born April 30, 1922, in Beckley, Joe was the third of four children born to the late John George and Annie Amiss Woods Beard.
A lifelong resident of Beckley, he was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and attended Beckley College (Mountain State University). A veteran of World War II, Joe served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, and was a recipient of the WWII Victory Medal and the American Theatre Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.
Joe retired from National Mine Service as a sales representative with over 20 years of service. He also worked many years for Anchor Sales Co. A member of the West Virginia Mining Institute, he assisted with many mine rescue operations.
In his leisure time, Joe enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing and spending time at his camp on the Greenbrier River. A West Virginia history buff, he loved to read. Joe liked to write and recite humorous poetry. Several of his poems about mining life in West Virginia were published in the National Mine Service Newsletter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Lisa Kathryn Daniels, on Sept. 27, 2000, and a sister, Alice Lee Whitener Massie.
He was the beloved husband of Jacqueline Danese Tackett Beard for the last 57 years; the loving father of Anna Jo Alexander and her husband, Dan, of McMurray, Pa., Patty Lynn Daniels and her husband, Bob, of Fayetteville, Ga., and Joe Woods II and his wife, Theresa Beard, of Shady Spring; the dear grandfather of James D. and Scott P. Alexander, both of McMurray, and Emily Alexis Daniels of Fayetteville, Ga.; the brother of Jack Beard and his wife, Sugar, and Jim Beard and his wife, Retha Beard, all of Beckley; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Dr. Phil Smith and Earl Whitener Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today and one hour before service Friday at the funeral home.

Henry Dale Boling
Henry Dale Boling, 57, of 222 Sunrise Ave., Beckley, died Saturday, March 17, 2007.
Born Oct. 20, 1950, at Fireco, he was the son of Virginia Mae Hylton Bolen of Jonben.
Mr. Boling was a former coal miner and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his father, Woodrow Bolen; a sister, Della Lilly; and a grandson, Zachary Boling.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Templeton Boling; a son, Michael Boling of Charleston; three daughters, Sabrina Johnson of Beckley, Kimberly John of Beckley and Tanya Parker of Beckley; brothers, Charles Bolen of Maple Fork, Bobby Bolen of Beckley, Roger Bolen of Beckley, Thomas Bolen of Coal City, DeWayne Bolen of Jonben and Eddie Bolen of Jonben; a sister, Phyllis Mustafo of Beckley; and 17 grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Charles Sammons officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Charles E. Cook Sr.
On Tuesday, March 20, 2007, the gates of Heaven opened and Mr. Charles “Charlie” Edward Cook Sr. was called home to be with the Lord. Mr. Cook was a devoted husband and father whose love knew no bounds.
Born April 3, 1936, at Dorothy, he was the son of the late John and Leah Stover Cook.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Jean Rhodes, and two brothers, Harold “Buck” Cook and James E. Cook.
Mr. Cook was a coal miner for Bethlehem Steel where he retired in 1996 with more than 40 years of service. He was an avid bowler at Leisure Lanes of Beckley. In addition to bowling, he enjoyed playing with his children and gardening. Mr. Cook will be sadly missed by all the children he opened his arms up with love to. He always wore a smile while he cradled his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews in his arms.
Mr. Cook resided on his farm on Hix Mountain with his loving wife, Glenna Bennett Cook; his daughter, Brandee Cook; son, Isaiah Cook; and his mother-in-law, Mamie Adkins, who all survive him. He will also be greatly missed by three sons, Charles “Chuck” Cook Jr. and wife, Billie, of Claremont, N.C., Greg Cook and wife, Janet, of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Mark Cook and wife, Andrea, of Whitesville. Mr. Cook had eight wonderful grandchildren, Courtney, Megan, Cheryl, David, Stefan, Kristina, Joshua and Joseph. He is also survived by a brother, John Cook Jr. and wife, Irene, of Scott Depot; six sisters, Fred White of Dorothy, Thelma Mancari and husband, Joe, of Yorktown, Va., Stella Thompson and husband, Bill, of Sophia, Ruth Ann Bailey and husband, Darrel, of Whitesville, Sue Harris and husband Buford “Boo,” of Loraine, Ohio, and Mary Lou Workman of Sylvester; and a sister-in-law, Juanita Cook of Charleston.
Service will be 1 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton, with the Rev. Jerry Pauley officiating. Burial will follow in O’Bryan Cemetery, Hix.

Frances Lucille Cunningham DeBerry
ROANOKE, Va. — Frances Lucille Cunningham DeBerry, 92, of Roanoke, formerly of Marianna, died Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at Springtree Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born March 5, 1915, at Curtisville, a daughter of the late James F. and Laura Grace Clark Cunningham.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. DeBerry; a daughter, Katherine Wylodean DeBerry Trainor; two sisters, Erma Helen and Glenda Elizabeth Cunningham; a brother, Arlis O. Cunningham; and a great-granddaughter, Colleen Bailey DeBerry.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Edmond and Bettye DeBerry of Roanoke; a sister, Gail Hatfield of Belmont; a sister-in-law, Donna Mae DeBerry Carney of Terra Alta; three grandsons and eight great-grandchildren, Edmond Timothy and Mary Bryan DeBerry, Robert, Brooke and Amanda of Upperville, Va., Eric Todd and Kacey DeBerry, Kelsey, Eric, and Joshua of Lovettsville, Va., and Elliott Trey and Suzanne DeBerry, Cole and Allyson of Elizabethtown, Pa.
She was retired from the Wyoming County school system.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, with the Rev. Marina Gopadze officiating.
The family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Oakey’s North Chapel, Roanoke.

Virginia Garrett Gwynn
BLUEFIELD, Va. — Virginia Garrett Gwynn, 84, of Bluefield, Va., formerly of Beckley, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2007, at Westwood Health Care in Bluefield, Va.
Born Nov. 13, 1922, in Giles County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Edward and Edith Wall Garrett.
She had been a resident at Westwood for two years and was a member of Durhing Church of Christ. She was a retired bookkeeper.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Gwynn.
Cryptside service will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 23, at Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Blue-well, with Minister Paul Delida officiating.
Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the mausoleum at service time.

Kyle Edward Lilly Sr.
Kyle Edward Lilly Sr., 87, of Beckley, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.
Born Jan. 12, 1920, in Glen View, he was the son of the late Everett and Linnie Perry Lilly.
Mr. Lilly was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and retired from Hormel Food Corp. He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Gideons International and the National Rifle Association. His church activities included serving as a deacon, Sunday school teach-er and Superintendent and chairman of the Men’s Laymen’s Group.
An avid hunter and fisherman, he also enjoyed his vegetable garden and carpentry work.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Ola, Charles, Paul and Everett Lilly Jr.; and sisters, Alma Pittman and Sarah Lilly.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Naomi Frances Pugh Lilly; daughters, Carol Elliott and husband, John, of Talcott and Joyce Lilly of Beckley; son, Kyle Edward Lilly II of Beckley; granddaughter, Tara Beth Cogar of Shady Spring; grandsons, Kyle “Trey” Edward Lilly III and wife, Lisa, of Beaver and Timothy Glenn Lilly and wife, Sherry; six great-grandchildren, Brooke Cogar, Alex Pack, Nathan Lane Lilly, Chase Cogar, Adam Lilly and Jacob Lilly; and a sister, Leona Burns of Beckley.
Service will be 1 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Bill Jenkins and Mr. Earl Whitener officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Edith Hunt Roberts
Edith Hunt Roberts, 95, of Beckley, died Monday, March 19, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a short illness.
Born at Lanark, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Mary Ann Cheetham Hunt.
Mrs. Roberts was a retired teacher for the Raleigh County Board of Education, with most of her teaching career at Pin-ey View Elementary School.
She was a member of Piney View Bible Church and a graduate of Concord College.
Mrs. Roberts was preceded in death by her sisters, Bertha Hunt, Clarice Martin and Bessie Bailey; a brother, Earl Hunt; and her husband, Cameron M. Roberts, preceded her in death in 1981.
Survivors include three daughters, Georgia Freeman and husband, Buddy, of Daniels, Marilyn Weaver and husband, Jim, of Harrisburg, Pa., and Patricia Roberts of Daniels; a brother, Ernest Hunt and wife, Margaret, of Piney View; three grandchildren, Deena Salon of Daniels, Cindy Choboian of Denver, Colo., and Angela Diodato of Furlong, Pa.; and four great-grandchildren.
Service will be 8 p.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Cecil Smith officiating. Graveside rites and burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

James Daniel ‘Fish’ Spradley Jr.
James Daniel “Fish” Spradley Jr. was born Sept. 14, 1946, to the late James and Evelyn Spradley (Hannah) in Beckley. He was the younger of two children.
James grew up and lived most of his life in Beckley. Upon graduation from Stratton High School, James completed three years of college at West Virginia State in Institute. James also completed various training to become a master electrician and builder inspector.
James was a strong believer in Christ at an early age and was a former member of Central Baptist Church in Beckley.
James and his former wife of 25 years, Sophronia Spradley, had four children together. Later, they adopted their niece and raised her as their own. James was a very dedicated father and instilled in them a sense of responsibility, integrity and love for family.
In the late ’80s, James moved his main residence to the Eastern Panhandle in Ranson. Although a resident of Ranson, James’ heart was still in Beckley as he frequently visited the area and was actively making plans to retire and return home.
James was employed with the City of Ranson for more than 15 years as the Public Works supervisor/building inspector. He was an active Master Mason with Star Lodge 1 in Charles Town. He was also on the board of directors for the Jefferson County Black Historical Preservation Society. James will be best remembered for his quick humor, his loving spirit and his dedication to family and friends.
He leaves to cherish his memory a son, Dallas Cooper; four daughters, Catrice Alphonso, Sendia “Peaches” (Stewart) Harrington, Juanette Spradley and Catrice (Anthony) Simmons; sister, Janice Green; aunt, Dorothy Jackson; uncle, Mose (Denise) Spradley; niece, Yvonne (Troy) LaGrone; nephew, Ernest (Tabitha) Spradley; 10 grandchildren, Sheena, Shakera, Deontez, Devante, Dallas Jr., Iyanna, Jaron, Antonio, Ciera and Stewart III; former wife, Sophronia Spradley; godson, Terry Nichols; close friends, Daniel “Junie” Jackson, Richard (Marlyn) Dobson, the Durgan Family and the Leach Family. James will also be remembered by a host of cousins, great-nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends.
Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Central Baptist Church, Brooks Street, Beckley, with the Rev. Walter Leach officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may call one hour before service Saturday at the church.
