Richard Miles Atwell Sr.


RUPERT — Richard Miles Atwell Sr., 65, of Anjean Road, passed away early Monday morning, Feb. 20, 2006, at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston following a short illness.
Born June 6, 1940, at War, he was a son of the late Herbert Miles Atwell and Rosetta Blair Atwell Shelton of Yukon.
Mr. Atwell was a member of Greenbrier Avenue Church of God in Rainelle and worked in construction as a dry wall finisher.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Jane Queen Atwell; his mother, Rosetta Blair Shelton of Yukon; three daughters, Barbara Payne of Bradshaw, Rosia Payne of Raysal and Lori Huffner of Mount Holly, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Mary Boggs of Rupert; three sons, James Atwell of Bradshaw, Daniel Atwell of Bradshaw and Richard Atwell Jr. of Bradshaw; a stepson, Gary Ratliff of Clintonville; four sisters, Eunice Edgell of Bradshaw, Sylvia Jane Deskins of Bradshaw, Loretta Payne of Coeburn, Va., and Katherine Flutz of Statesville, N.C.; five brothers, Dillard Ray Atwell of Bradshaw, Charles Miles Atwell of Bradshaw, John Henry Atwell of Union, David Lee Atwell of Statesville and Joseph Blair Atwell of Iaeger; 21 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Greenbrier Avenue Church of God, Rainelle, with Bishop Michael Davis and the Rev. Michael Simms officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, and one hour before service Saturday at the church.

Linda Gaye Cales Bowyer


BEREA, Ohio — Linda Gaye Cales Bowyer, 60, a native of Oak Hill, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, at the Renaissance, Olmsted Township, Ohio.
Linda graduated from Collins High School in Oak Hill in 1963. She moved to Columbia Station, Ohio, in 1969, then Berea in 1972.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth F. Bowyer, whom she married Oct. 20, 1966; her children, Douglas M. Burgess II and wife, Jennifer, of Elyria, Ohio, Carmen I. Thomas of Brook Park, Ohio, Toby L. Bowyer of Berea and Myra L. Bowyer of Medina, Ohio; and grandchildren, Blake Bowyer, Tyler and Emily Thomas, Casey Glem, Nicole and Dylan Bowyer, and Danny Burgess. She was the sister to Jean Dotson of Culloden, Ronald Cales of Casper, Wyo., Nancy Treadway of Oak Hill and Barbara Backus of Oak Hill.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Sam Calloway officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
The family will receive friends 1 p.m. until time of service Friday at the funeral home.

WHITESVILLE — Daniel Fredrick Branham, 75, of Whitesville, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2006, at his home after a long illness.

Cameron Wayne Brown


Cameron Wayne ‘Skip’ Brown, 57, of Shady Spring, entered a new life on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, at home surrounded by family and friends after a battle with lung cancer.
Cameron was born Nov. 2, 1948, at Oceana, the son of the late Cecil O. and Clara Repass Brown.
He graduated from Oceana High School in 1966 and that fall entered the U.S. Army. He served tours of duty in Germany and the Vietnam Conflict. His last posting was at Fort Polk, La., where he was a drill instructor. He left the Army in 1973 with the rank of sergeant E5. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Purple Heart.
He attended the College of West Virginia, was a former employee of N&W Railroad and last worked as a carrier for the Beckley Post Office.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack W. Brown.
Those left to cherish his memory are a daughter, Camolyn M. (Cammie) Brown of Daniels; his common law wife of nine years, Marceline Price of Shady Spring, along with her family who accepted Cameron into their family, Marceline’s children and grandchildren, Julie and Shane Harding and Caleb, Ashley and Charity Beth of Shady Spring, Jason and Melinda Price and Tyler, Joey, Katlin, Alysea of Mullens; Marceline’s mother, Ida (Mom) Holdren of Daniels, along with her siblings, David and Sharon Holdren and Angela, Anthony and Megan of Shady Spring, Thomas and Linda Holdren and Brian and Kimberly of Wooster, Ohio, Vickie and John Bair and Leah, Charity, Shawna and Joseph of Shady Spring, Norma and Michael Reedy of Frederickstown, Ohio, Ida and Jeff Cook and Nathaniel of Charleston; two sisters and their families, Debbie and George Terry II of Kopperston Road and a son, Edward, and Susan Terry, Grace and Walker of Lenoir, N.C., Sandra and David Tucker and sons, Charles and Stacy Tucker, of Pineville; special friends, David and Beulah Shumate of Oceana, Arthur Warden of Beckley and Kelly; and a host of friends and family.
Service will be 11 a.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel, Shady Spring, with Pastor Roy Shrewsbury and Pastor P. Randall Bowles will conduct graveside rites. Burial will follow in Palm memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Esco Browning


 Esco Browning, 83, of Eunice (formerly of Glen Daniel and Packsville), died at home Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, following a short illness.
Born Jan. 22, 1923, in Bandytown, he was the son of the late Scott Browning and the late Alice Browning Shumate.
He was a lifelong resident of Little Coal River and Big Coal River. He was a retired coal miner from ARMCO Steel in Montcoal, a member of UMWA Local Union No. 6608; he served his country in the United States Army where he served in World War II in several European countries where he received several me-dals for his service to his country. He was a fervent outdoorsman, where he enjoyed hiking in the mountains, digging ginseng, camping and hunting. He was an avid gardener all his life.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Burnside Browning; a grandson, Frederick Darrell Pettry; two brothers, Cecil and Ernest Browning; and a sister, Phoebe Linville.
Survivors include his sons, Homer of Sheffield Lake, Ohio, Jackie of Horse Creek, Fred of Comfort and Tony of Whitesville; daughters, Alice Pettry of Eunice, Diane Wilson of Charleston, Debbie Kinder of Eunice and Marilyn Grubbs of Danville; grandchildren, Johnny Browning of Cleveland, Ohio, Lisa Browning-Harvel of Sheffield Lake, Sheila Browning of Sheffield Lake, Robin Pettry-Wentz of South Charleston, Kenneth Pettry of Clendenin, Scott Browning of Dry Creek, Daniel Browning of Naoma, Rachael Massey-Deskins of Franklin, Ind., Terri Browning-Beller of Sylvester, Michael Browning of Seng Creek, Shawna Kinder-Sigmon of Marmet, Debra Lea Kinder of St. Albans, Mackenzie Grubbs-Raines of Charleston, Karissa Browning-Webb of Culloden and Lesly Browning of Huntington; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Brittany, Nicole, Cody Esco, Kyndra, Morgan, Kandis, Daelyn, Davyn, Jonathan, Jaxson, Karis, Ian, Kelsey, Nata-Leigh, Isaiah and Zachary Russell; and step-great-grandchildren, Dakota and Jayce.
Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with the Rev. David Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by Oak Hill VFW Post 3110.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Walter Lane Jack Sr.


GASSAWAY — Walter Lane Jack Sr., 63, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2006, at home after an extended illness.
He was born July 23, 1942, at Gassaway, a son of the late William Walter and Virginia Louise Metheny Jack.
Mr. Jack was a retied first sergeant in the Army National Guard with 27 years of service and retired with 30 years of service from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources. He was a Methodist, a 1960 graduate of Gassaway High School and a graduate of Glenville State College. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by sons, Walter Lane Jack II and wife, Sherri, of Gassaway and Robert Kenneth Martin and wife, Michelle, of Birch River; daughters, Joy Elaine Jack Barnes and husband, Tom, of Spencer and Donna Raye Martin Pate and husband, Robert, of Beckley; brothers, Henry Jack and wife, Dolly, of Exchange and David Jack and wife, Barbara, of Exchange; sisters, Jo-Ellen Smith and husband, Erman, of Frametown and Lou Ann Gaines and husband, Lloyd, of Exchange; grandchildren, Walter Lane “Trey” Jack III, Jeffery and Jeremy Martin, Abigail and Thomas Barnes II, and Danielle Pate; and several nieces and nephews.

Donald R. Lavinder


ARCADIA, Fla. — Donald R. Lavinder, 69, formerly of West Virginia, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, at his home.
Mr. Lavinder was born at Garten Aug. 9, 1936, the son of Earl and Christine Lavinder.
Mr. Lavinder was an active member of Hickory Street Church of Christ in Arcadia. He served nine years in the U.S. Air Force and retired after 28 years from the Chevrolet V-8 Engine Plant in Flint, Mich.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Zeda Lavinder; brother, Robert of Washington, D.C.; a son, Donnie of Weston, Fla.; two daughters, Cheryl (Ed) Nixon of Flushing, Mich., and Jeana (David) Carrier of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Michael and Jennifer Nixon; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a twin brother, Ronald.
Graveside service for his cremated remains will be held at a later date in Michigan.

Christine Alderson Hatfield Lilly


Christine Alderson Hatfield Lilly, 90, of Beckley, passed away Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006. She was born in Matoaka on Dec. 28, 1915. She was the daughter of Coleman Alderson and Mossie Caldwell Hatfield, and the great-granddaughter of William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Earl Lilly, founder of Lillys’ Crown Jewelers Corp.
She is survived by two sons, Thomas Earl Lilly and his wife, Janet, of Beckley and John Leslie Lilly and his wife, Ann, of Flat Top Lake; a daughter, Judy Lilly Harrah of Beckley; eight grandchildren, Lisa Lilly and her husband, Keith Gutzman, of Charleston, Susanne Prudnick and her husband, Rick, and sons, Andrew, Ty-ler and Will, of Charlotte, N.C., Laura Sutton and her husband, Mark, and sons, Jack and Nate, of Martinsburg, Elizabeth Lilly Holbrook and her children, Christopher and Cody, of Wilmington, N.C., Steffani Lilly Larrimore and her husband, Craig, and son, Zackary, of Wilmington, N.C., John Brian Lilly and his wife, Missy, of Wilmington, N.C., Shannon Harrah of Denver, Colo., and Andrew Harrah of Denver, Colo.; a brother, Dr. Coleman C. Hatfield and his wife, Virginia, of Logan; and a sister, Annabel Goode and her husband, Claude, of Pittsburgh, Pa. Also, special caregivers include Minnie and Ken Blevins, Nancy Holt and Tina Grizzell.
Christine was a member of Beckley Presbyterian Church and a former member and Sunday school teacher at First Christian Church of Logan. She graduated from Logan High School in 1931 and was a summa cum laude graduate of Concord College in 1936. She was president of Delta Sigma Epsilon sorority. Christine taught English in the Logan County school system. She later worked with her husband at the downtown Logan Lillys’ Crown Jewelers store. In 2000, she was inducted in to the Honorary Alumni Hall of Fame at Mountain State University. She enjoyed writing poetry, music and playing piano.
Pallbearers include family members.
Service will be 1 p.m. today at Beckley Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Adrian Pratt officiating. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Athens Cemetery.

Mrs. Neason was a homemaker and of the Catholic faith. She had received an associate’s degree from Clarion University in Pennsylvania.

Lavonia Audrey ‘Sparkle’ Parks


Lavonia Audrey “Sparkle” Williams Parks, 67, of 113 Mills Ave., Beckley, died at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, at her home with her husband by her side following a nine-month illness.
Born July 1, 1938, at St. Albans, she was the daughter of the late James Lee Williams and Susie Anna Pearson Williams.
Mrs. Parks was a homemaker and a member of New Bethel Holiness Temple. She was educated in Kanawha County at Carter G. Woodson and was a graduate of Garnett High School.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Lloyd and James Williams; sisters, Viola Williams Long and Susie B. Heart; nephew, Hosea Lee Washington Jr.; and another brother.
Survivors include her husband, Clarence E. Parks; children, Avery D. Williams of Elkin, N.C.; stepson, Steven Parks of Richmond, Va.; stepdaughters, Maurita Parks of Hagerstown, Md., and Vonetta “Eddie” Parks of Charleston; grandson, Avery D. Williams Jr. of Charleston; a brother, Michael D. Williams of West Virginia; a sister, Minnie L. Brown of St. Albans; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, church family and friends.

Charles Calvin Paynter


CHARLESTON — Charles Calvin Paynter, 93, formerly of Cyclone, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Feb. 20, 2006, at his home after an extended illness.
Born Nov. 30, 1912, at Madison Creek, he was the son of the late Benjamin Harrison and Bertha Bur-gess Paynter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Gaye Paynter; his second wife, Dorothy Jane Paynter; two sisters, Pearl and Goldie Edith Paynter, and six brothers, Arnold, George, Dexter, Eugene, Leonard and John Henry Paynter.
Calvin was a retired coal miner, formerly employed by Powellton Coal Co., and was a former logger. He was a member of the UMWA. Calvin was the oldest male member of Mallory Church of God, which he attended for over 40 years. He loved to sing and play gospel music on his guitar and harmonica.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Thelma Canterbury Paynter; seven children and their spouses, Lois Brown of Greenville, Tenn., Kathleen and the Rev. James Walker of Oceana, Joyce and the Rev. Phillip L. Cook of Monticello, Fla., Carole Cook of Cyclone, Robert and Judy Paynter of Oceana, Charles and Wendy Paynter of Cyclone and Joseph and Dorothy Paynter of Pineville; a stepdaughter, with whom he made his home, Billie Jones and husband, Jerry, of Charleston; four sisters, Donzel Blankenship of Turkey Creek, Mary Ruth Elkins of Mallory and Bonnie Eldridge and Nancy Miller, both of Cyclone; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several step grandchildren.
Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Mallory Church of God with the Revs. James Walker, Phillip Cook, James Lafferty and Eugene Sparks officiating. Burial will follow in Cook Cemetery, Cyclone.

Roncie ‘Willie’ Pennington


GLEN ROGERS — Roncie “Willie” Pennington, at the age of 40 years, seven months and 16 days, departed this life Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006.
Born July 2, 1965, at Mullens, he was the son of George and Janice Tyree Pennington.
Mr. Pennington was a 1983 graduate of Glen Rogers High School and employed by S&T Welding Co. of Pine-ville.
Willie was a son, brother, husband and father. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Cleat and Edith Tyree; and his paternal grandparents, William and Lissie Pennington.
Those left to cherish his memory are his parents, George and Janice Pennington of Glen Rogers; two sons, Evan and Andrew Pennington, along with their mother, Lisa Pennington, of Mount Airy, N.C.; a brother, Michael Pennington and his wife, Tshonia, of Mt. Airy; two sisters, Marty Blankenship and her husband, Bill, of Reidsville, N.C., and Juanita Tilley and her husband, Mike, of Ravencliff; five nephews; four nieces; and a host of friends.
A celebration of Willie’s life will be noon Thursday at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Rev. Harry Lafferty and the Rev. Herman Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Virginia R. Ramsey


Virginia Rose Robertson Ramsey, 79, of MacArthur, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.
Born Nov. 2, 1926, at Glen White, she was the daughter of the late Leonard G. Robertson and Glydus Daniel Robertson.
Mrs. Ramsey was a homemaker. She was a member of Hollywood Missionary Baptist Church at MacArthur, where she was Sunday school teacher and a member of the Missions Circle. She was a 1944 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Jane Stover and Mary Phillips.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph Elmer Ramsey; a son, Richard Ramsey of Blue Jay; a daughter, Pam Ramsey of Charleston; brothers, Leonard Robertson Jr. of Valdosta, Ga., and John Russell Robertson of Apoka, Fla.; and two sisters, Wilma Rachel Campbell of Orlando, Fla., and Ann Bowyer of Titusville, Fla.
Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Robert Keaton officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Robert Timothy Richards


NIMITZ — Robert Timothy Richards, 54, went to be sheltered in the arms of God at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, at his home after a long illness. 
Born April 6, 1951 at Glen White, he was the son of the late Franklin and Emma Jean Prince Richards. 
Robert was a disabled timberman and sawmill worker. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was of the Baptist faith.

 At Robert’s request, a graveside service with military honors will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Lilly-Crews Cemetery, Nimitz, with Pastor Bill Ballengee officiating. Burial will follow.
There will be no visitation.

Yvonne D. Standard


RONCEVERTE — Yvonne D. Standard, 70, passed away Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, in Alleghany Regional Hospital, Low Moor, Va., after a short illness.
Born Jan. 25, 1936, at Clintonville, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Victoria Coleman Nalley.
Mrs. Standard had been a lifelong resident of Greenbrier County, was employed at the Greenbrier Hotel for 37 years, was a minister for many years and the pastor of the Mission of Deliverance Apostolic Jesus Name Church. She was involved in numerous charitable events, such as providing clothing, food and shelter not only in the local communities, but as far away as Jamaica and to the Native American Indians in New Mexico, and was a homemaker.
Survivors include six sons, Richard Freeman of Circleville, Ohio, Marvin Freeman of Bushnell, Fla., Hollis Freeman of Ronceverte, Danta Freeman of Alderson, Arron Freeman of Alderson and Patrick Standard of Concord, N.C.; two sisters, Joan Wilmer of White Sulphur Springs and Loretta Douglas of Roanoke, Va.; three brothers, Mark Harris of Roosevelt, N.Y., James Harris of Huntington and Larry Bray of Washington, D.C.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel, Fairlea, with the Rev. Richard Freeman officiating. Burial will follow in Trail’s End Cemetery, Clintonville.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

CyGy Nicole Stevens, 21, of Shady Spring, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006.
Born Aug. 13, 1984, in Marietta, Ohio, she was the daughter of John Stevens of Flat Top and Angela Morris of Gansevoort, N.Y.
CyGy was a graduate of PikeView High School in Princeton and had been a resident of Shady Spring for the past six years.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. — Lucky D. Stover, 49, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2006, at The Gettysburg Hospital.
Born April 28, 1956, in Oak Hill, he was the son of the late John Hardy and Virginia Vala (Aliff) Stover.
Mr. Stover was a member of Gettysburg Church of Christ. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was employed by TNT Underground Contracting Co. for many years.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Lisa L. (Henry) Stover; a son, Lucky D. Stover Jr. of Gettysburg; a daughter, Leah L. Stover of Gettysburg; two grandsons; brothers, John Hardy Stover Jr. of Mount Hope and Barney G. Stover of Brogue, Pa.; a sister, Sonia Evans of Gettysburg.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Charles P. and Lawson Stover; and sisters, Lorena Stover, Fannie Dillon and Jeanette Proctor.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ Chapel on the campus of Gettysburg College. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg.

Jessie Riner Wiley


MOBILE, Ala. — Jessie Riner Wiley was born on July 29, 1919, at Gatewood, a daughter of the late Lud C. and Russie Riner. She died Feb. 15, 2006, after a short illness while a patient at Providence Hospital in Mobile, Ala.
She was a graduate of Fayetteville High School and Manchester College in Manchester, Ind. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Dothan, Ala. She was active in several garden clubs in Montgomery and Dothan, where she won a number of awards for her flower arrangements.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Wiley; three brothers, Glendon, Aubrey and Paul; and two sisters, Clara Dooley and Audrey Ray.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Everett and husband, Grady, of New Bern, N.C., and Alice Wiley of Mobile, Ala.; a son, Darryl Malek-Wiley and wife, Rebecca, of New Orleans, La.; two grandchildren, Richard Everett and wife, Kelly, and Heather and husband, Hunter; and a great-granddaughter.
She is also survived by two sisters, Grisilda Murphy of Avon Park, Fla., and Ila Mae Maynor and husband, Robert, of Sunday Road, Hico; and a brother, Carl Riner and wife, Ruth, of Gatewood.
The body was cremated.
Memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate her life.
