Nancy Armstrong



TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Mrs. Nancy Armstrong, 63, of Tallahassee, Fla., formerly of Beckley, passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008.

Lucy Delilah Jones Borders



Lucy Delilah Jones was born on May 5, 1934, to Tom and Bessie Cabell Jones in Brooklyn, W.Va. She was one of 14 children.

She was a graduate of Stratton High School, where she met and married Kenneth Borders. She retired from the Raleigh County Board of Education when she became ill, having been head cook at Beckley Junior High and Central Elementary schools. She loved to cook and she cooked for and fed many, many children.

Lucy was a member of St. Paul Baptist Temple, where she was spiritual advisor for the Sisters United in Christ Ministry. She loved God, her family, especially her grandchildren, her church, and pastor. She was small in stature and soft spoken but she had a huge presence. Her favorite pastime was shopping, shopping, and shopping ... in particular for shoes and hats.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth “Booney” Borders Jr.; brothers, Thomas, William, Augustus, Clinton, Cornelius, Paul, and Steve Jones; two sisters, Ora Lee Mackins and Mattie Walters; three nephews, Anthony “Scrap” Walters, Lorraine, and Robert Clifford Jones; and a great-nephew, Anthony Ray Walters.

Left to cherish precious memories are her husband, Kenneth; a son, Franklin Dewayne (Renee) Borders of Beckley; four daughters, Gloria Laverne Borders, Debra Borders, and Stephanie (Michael) Allen, all of Beckley, and Sharon of Pontiac, Mich.; three grandchildren she raised, Moneece, Joneece Borders, and Byron A.L. Newbold; other grandchildren, Nicole, Miranda, Franklin, and Charles Borders, and Renee McInnis, all of Beckley, and Johnathan of Pontiac, Mich.; the three newest members of the family, LaMya Kay Walker, Sydnee Aneece McGray, and Jeremiah Alexander McCray; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Chesnee, Donavan, Karrington, Kennadi, and Lauren; two brothers, Lorraine and Lawrence Jones of Beckley; a sister, Patricia Irvin of Columbus, Ohio; other daughters she adopted, Mary Mayes, Tonie Hairston, and Veronica Pettiford (her daughter-in-law); and a host of nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, other relatives, and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at St. Paul Baptist Temple, 129 Rice St., with Rev. Walter M. Leach officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

RONCEVERTE — Willard Church Jr., age 78, of Ronceverte, passed away Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Ronceverte. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Ronceverte.

Ira D. Crookshanks Sr.



RAINELLE — Ira D. Crookshanks Sr., 96, of Loops Road, Rainelle, passed away Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea, following a long illness.

Born on Oct. 12, 1911, on Sewell Mountain, he was the son of the late Mark R. and Lula Sims Crookshanks.

Mr. Crookshanks worked for Meadow River Lumber Company, for the C&O Railroad, was a self-employed logger, and retired from Bryant Mining as a coal transporter. He served in the U.S. Army as a corporal in the 67th Chemical Company during World War II and was a life member of the Big Sewell Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers, William “Tip” Crookshanks of Rainelle, Samuel A. Crookshanks of Cleveland, Ohio, and Edgar M. Crookshanks of Rainelle; three sisters, Nelly M. Crookshanks of Ravenswood, Icie A. Sanford of Corliss, and Sally E. Mullins of Rainelle; a daughter-in-law, Betty Campbell Crookshanks; and a grandson, Greg L. Crookshanks, both of Hazard, Ky.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, A. Ruth Vestal Crookshanks; three sons, Warren Crookshanks and wife Sharon of Cedar Bluff, Richard Crookshanks and wife Carolyn of Rainelle, and Ira Crookshanks Jr. and wife Billie of Princeton; two sisters, Kate Barnett and Thelma Giboney, both of South Charleston; four grandchildren, Richard Crookshanks II of Fairmont, Alexander Crookshanks of Bluefield, Marisa Crookshanks of Rainelle, and Misty Loggins of Princeton; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Mike Tincher officiating. Burial will follow in the Sims Cemetery on Loops Road, Rainelle.

Family will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call today from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations of sympathy be made to the Sims Cemetery, HC 61 Box 877, Rainelle, WV 25962.

Arlene Miller Meadows, formerly of Beckley, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at the Laurels Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Salisbury, N.C., following a long illness. She was 73 years of age.

Wesley E. Palmer Jr.



AMIGO — Wesley E. Palmer Jr., 59, of Amigo, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, in a Princeton hospital, after having fought a courageous battle with diabetes and heart disease for many years.

Born Aug. 11, 1948, at Amigo, he was the son of Betty (Cecil) Palmer Thompson of Amigo, and the late Wesley E. Palmer Sr.

Mr. Palmer was a former coal miner with 24 years of service, having last worked for Ranger Fuel Corp. at Sabine. He was a member of the U.M.W.A. In his leisure, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family. He was a devoted dad, son, brother, uncle, and grandpa.

In addition to his father, he is also preceded in death by a brother, James Palmer; maternal grandparents, Henry and Agusta Cecil; and paternal grandparents, Jon and Bessie Palmer.

Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Betty Cecil Palmer Thompson of Amigo; a daughter, Sheila Yearout and her husband, Jesse, of Helen; a son, Wesley E. Palmer III and his wife, Misty, of Amigo; two sisters, Wilma Norman and her husband, Dennis, of Amigo and Carla Haga and her husband, Buck, of Barker’s Ridge; a brother, Buddy Thompson and his wife, Ruby, of Amigo; five grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts, and uncles.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens, with Rev. Charles Bolen officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Michael and Cody Palmer, Keith Thompson, Jacob Norman, Bobby Palmer, and Cecil Ward.

Blanche Marie Stover went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 19, 2008.

Born Sept. 15, 1916, she is the daughter of the late Hartley and Grace Dunbar.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Virginia Bower of Beckley, W.Va.; a stepdaughter, Linda Carol Bair of Fayetteville, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Don P. Bower and wife Cheryl and Ron L. Bower and wife Amanda of Charleston, W.Va.; six great-grandchildren, Erik, Josh, Kevin, Byron, Bianca, and Lauren Bower; brothers, Henry Dunbar, Harley Dunbar, Guy Dunbar, James Dunbar, and Al Dunbar; and many special nephews and nieces.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, W.Va. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Don Bower, Ron Bower, Josh Bower, Kevin Bower, Ray Shawver, and David Underwood.

OAK HILL — Robert C. Thomas Sr., 83, of Oak Hill, passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

Born Dec. 8, 1924, at Charleston, W.Va., he was the son of the late William C. and Melinda Jackson Thomas.

Mr. Thomas was retired as a lead machinist for the C&O Railway for 23 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having attained the rank of Seaman 1st Class and served on the U.S.S. Montpelier. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Oak Hill. Mr. Thomas enjoyed hunting and working in his shop.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lovey Florence “Polly” Thomas; a son, Danny Preston Thomas; and a brother, Eugene Thomas.

Survivors include four sons, Robert C. Thomas Jr. and wife Debbie, Jimmy D. Thomas, Wayne Thomas and wife Sherry, all of Oak Hill, and Brian Thomas of Greenville, S.C.; grandchildren, Ashley Thomas and wife Cheri, Michelle Cox and husband Chad, both of Fayetteville, Wendy Stinnett and husband Dave, JimBo Thomas, both of Kincaid, Brittany Thomas of Oak Hill, and Lori Jasper and husband Sam of Fayetteville; stepgrandchildren, Doug McClaskey Jr., Amber Hurd and husband Eric, both of Waynesboro, Pa., and Cecil O’Dell and wife Tina of Oak Hill; and 11 great-grandchildren, Ashley, Sam, Jacey, Daniel, Monica, Mollie, Adian, Addison, and Kinley O’Dell.

The Thomas Family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Hospice of Southern West Virginia and the Bowers Hospice House of Prosperity.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel in Oak Hill, with Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill, with military rites by VFW Post 3110.

Cleve Eugene Wood Sr.



Cleve Eugene Wood Sr., age 86, of Prosperity, W.Va., died Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, at the Raleigh General Hospital, following a long illness.

Born in Raleigh County, W.Va., on Feb. 8, 1921, he was the son of the late Stephen Matthew Wood and Miranda Sizemore Wood.

Mr. Wood was a retired employee of the W.Va. Turnpike Commission where he served as a supervisor of signs and markings. He was a U.S. veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Cates. He was a member of the DESA, and was a member of the Prosperity Church of Christ. At his church, he served as Elder and Song Leader.

Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his first wife, Stella Wood; by brothers, Roman, Jimmy, and Howard Wood; and a sister, Norma Epler.

Survivors include his wife, Dianne Spears Wood; sons, Cleve Eugene Wood Jr. and wife Carol of Windsor, Va., and Walter Stephen Wood and wife Diane of Lake Gaston, N.C.; stepson, Todd Spears of Canton, Ga.; brothers, Stephen Wood of Prosperity and Blane Wood of Shady Spring; sisters, Eva Cooper of Beaver, Beulah Karnes of Murrells Inlet, S.C., Selda Jarrell of Beaver, Daphine Stokely of Beckley, and Shirley Lafferty of Prosperity; grandchildren, Greg, Kevin, Shawn, and Scottie; stepgrandchildren, Morgun and Rhianna; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, with Evangelist Fred Ford officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Friends may call from 6 until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.
