Fayette County authorities worked Tuesday to find out why three men were gunned down in Hico on Memorial Day.

Gary Dwayne Martin, 56, of Stringtown Road, Hico, is charged with three counts of murder in the shooting deaths of Carl Blaine Fox, 24, Christopher Lee Legg, 23, and Dustin Tyler Hughes, 22, all of Hico, Bill Laird said.

Martin remained incarcerated at Southern Regional Jail, awaiting a bond hearing before a circuit judge, Laird said.

According to Laird, two victims were riding ATVs and a third was riding a trail bike on Stringtown Road just before the shootings were reported at 1:10 p.m. Monday.

Laird said Tuesday the primary focus of the investigation was determining a motive. Investigators believe a verbal argument took place before the shooting.

Laird said the shootings did not appear to be sparked by the victims’ ATV and trail bike riding, even though that’s a conclusion some people may try to reach.

There is no indication the victims were riding on Martin’s property, Laird said. The victims were shot with a rifle on a public roadway in front of Martin’s residence.

Given the triple homicide took place in a small, rural area of the county, investigators believe the Martin and the victims were likely familiar with each other, Laird said.

Laird said the homicides were Fayette County’s first murders of the year and the first triple shooting in his 14 years as sheriff.
