Teams for the 2010 Raleigh County Relay for Life picked up their team T-shirts and captain hats during Relay for Life Bank Night at City National Bank on Park Avenue Tuesday night.
Fifty-four teams are registered for the relay, said Relay for Life Chair Carrie Lawrence.
She said the event is to celebrate cancer survivors and will kick off with a prayer. Cancer survivors will take the first lap, followed by the survivors accompanied by their caregivers. The third lap is when “everybody joins in” and runs or walks till the waking hours, Lawrence added.
All the money generated from the relay, which began in Raleigh County in 2002, goes toward the American Cancer Society in order to help find cures for cancer, she said.
Last year, 55 teams registered for the relay, Lawrence said, but the one less team this year doesn’t detract from the fact that 600 people have registered for this year’s event, 200 of those being cancer survivors.
“We invite everybody in the community to come out and celebrate the cancer survivors and help find a cure for cancer,” Lawrence said.
The relay begins at 7 p.m. July 9 and runs until 5 a.m. July 10 at Crossroads Mall.
