Support for Mac’s Toy Fund comes from unexpected places

From Staff Reports

— Kids grow fast — and just as quickly, they grow out of many of their toys.

Mac’s Toy Fund is hoping that these out-grown toys will find their way to the Dec. 15 distribution event that will allow thousands of Raleigh County children to have a happier Christmas.

Mac’s Toy Fund Vice President Pete Torrico and members of Generation Beckley gathered Monday evening to inventory and assess what used toys are on hand. Torrico said he was somewhat taken aback by how few have been collected so far.

“We need a lot more,” he said. “I hope we can appeal to the kind people of Raleigh County to donate their children’s out-grown toys so we can be sure each child goes home happy.”

Every child who attends the event — invitations for which are sent by the Department of Health and Human Services — receives one new and one used toy. DHHR says nearly 4,500 children will be invited to this year’s Mac’s party.

Toys can be dropped off at BJW Printing, 3100 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Mac’s also needs donations of good, used bicycles. The bikes will be cleaned and repaired by members of Boy Scout troops 3 and 103. Troop 103 Scoutmaster Arnold Bolen said they like to have about 200 bikes to give out and more are needed to meet that goal.

There is also a need for good winter coats for children and adults. If you have some you would like to donate, you can drop theme off at Family Coin Laundry on Robert C. Byrd Drive just below Arby’s.

The monetary donations received at Mac’s are used for a variety of things, including materials for the handcrafted wooden toys that are made at FCI — Beckley, new coats for young children, gloves and hats, new toys, fruit, venue rental and many incidentals.

But none of the donations are used for any administrative purpose; it all is plowed back into the fund to better the lives of the children as envisioned by founder Ted “Mac” McDowell 82 years ago.
