Clay-Battelle takes down Valley in HIT

SUMMERSVILLE — Valley ran into an early Clay-Battelle buzzsaw and never recovered.

In the third-place game of the third annual West Virginia Hometown Invitational Tournament at the Summersville Arena and Conference Center, the athletic, hot-shooting Cee-Bees twice built up leads of 19 points in the first half en route to an eventual 61-50 victory over the Greyhounds.

The Cee-Bees, with some of the same athletes who helped eliminate Valley from the 2012 Class A football playoffs, had leads of 36-17 and 38-19 late in the first half before Valley put up six straight points to trail by 13, 38-25, at  intermission.

“With their shooting and getting in transition, they were hard to guard,” said Valley coach Joe McCoy. “We tried two or three different (types of defense) to try to stop them.

“They were shooting lights-out. Hats off to them.”

Class A No. 10 Valley cut the deficit to 10, 43-33, when Zac Warden scored off a Raeshawn Breckenridge feed with 3:16 left in the third, but Clay-Battelle promptly reeled off six straight to keep the ‘Hounds at bay.

“We got it to 10 and there we go missing high percentage shots,” said McCoy. “That’s been our problem all year.”

Warden scored 16 and Breckenridge 12 for Valley.

Tanner Bragg tallied 23 and Zach Chisler 18 for the  Cee-Bees. Twelve of Chisler’s points occurred in the first period. Logan Opyoke added 13 points to the cause.

Valley (11-6) hosts Nicholas County Monday.

Clay-Battelle (12-5) plays in the OVAC playoffs Tuesday.

Also in the WVHIT Saturday, the Greenbrier West Cavaliers - behind 21 points from Colby Ennis and 18 from Josh Martin — defeated Class A No. 9 Tygarts Valley 64-44 for fifth place. Brett Griffith led Tygarts Valley with 21.

Richwood gained seventh-place honors by rallying for a 56-46 victory over South Harrison. Ben Weber and John Bard scored 13 points each to lead the Lumberjacks, and Zach Bennett had 12 and Ryan Bennett 10. Logan Kirby scored 11 for South Harrison.

Midland Trail fell 61-57 to East Hardy in the battle for  ninth place. The Patriots were led by Collin Carte’s 17 points, while East Hardy got a 29-point explosion from Tyler Mongold.

Fayetteville grabbed 15th-place honors with a 58-52 come-from-behind win over Valley-Wetzel. Zach Semple exploded for 30 points to lead the Pirates, and Will Dooley added 10. Jack Wells scored 18 for Valley-Wetzel.

In other games, Man earned 13th place with a 60-58 victory over Doddridge County, and Cameron took 11th place by beating Sherman 70-57.

St. Marys defeated Buffalo 63-61 in the championship game.
