3rd time is not a charm

Woodrow falls to South Charleston for 1st-ever 3-game home losing streak

BECKLEY — It was a historic night for the Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagles on Tuesday night — although historic in a way coach Ron Kidd’s team would probably like to forget.

Beckley (4-3) lost to South Charleston (7-1) by a score of 51-44. It is Beckley’s third loss in a row on Dave Barksdale Court inside the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. It’s the first 3-game losing streak in the arena since it opened in 1962, when the court’s namesake was a player.

The game was a matchup of top ten schools in the first AP boys basketball poll of the season. Woodrow came into the game tied for seventh in Class AAA with Preston, while the Black Eagles of South Charleston were third.

Beckley started as it has in recent outings, playing aggressive defense and shooting well. However, much like recent outings, the Flying Eagles let the wheels fall off as the game progressed.

The Flying Eagles outscored South Charleston 14-10 in the first quarter, behind six points from Donte Nabors. Freshman Nequan Carrington and senior Andrew Johnson had four apiece.

Beckley spent much of the first half on the offensive side of the court. However, a series of missed shots, turnovers and thrown away passes kept the Flying Eagles from doing much.

The Black Eagles picked up the pace, adding 14 points to tie the game 24-24 at halftime.

The third quarter was eerily reminiscent of the Saturday night loss to Parkersburg, when the Big Reds held the Flying Eagles to only two field goals. Only on this night, the Black Eagles would hold Woodrow to one field goal and just six points in the quarter.

South Charleston chipped away at Woodrow throughout the quarter and finally broke away, scoring 18 points, including a big 3-pointer from Ra’shaud Kincaid. The Black Eagles ended the third quarter with a 12-point lead, 42-30.

With less than three minutes remaining in the game, Johnson cut the deficit to one 42-41. After a back-and-forth battle between the two teams, South Charleston had a four-point lead with 26.7 remaining. Johnson brought the ball down the court and threw up a 3-pointer that missed and sailed out of bounds.

South Charleston was led by Kincaid’s 17 points.

Woodrow was led by junior Donte Nabors with 20 points. He’s averaging 19.7 points per game this season.

It was a difficult loss for the Flying Eagles, who going into Tuesday’s loss were averaging 70 points per game on the season and 66 points per game at home. Tuesday’s loss marks the fourth game in a row that the Flying Eagles have failed to score at least 60 points.

Beckley has little time to reflect on the loss, as it travels to Winfield on Thursday night.

“We’ve just got to get ready for Winfield,” a frustrated Kidd said after the game.
