Brown making his community proud

When Summers County’s Isaiah Brown steps on the field, he plays with a lot on his mind.

“Honestly, I think about what I usually do,” Brown said. “My community and family. I never want to let them down. I go 100 percent for them. If I don’t, I’m not only cheating myself, but I’m cheating them.”

Brown gave folks from Hinton to Elton and everywhere in between something of which to be proud when he helped lead the Summers County Bobcats to a 17-14 victory over Wyoming East last Friday.

Brown rushed for 139 yards on 18 carries, including a 70-yard run in the third quarter to give the Bobcats the decisive score.

He also recovered a fumble on defense.

“Isaiah’s a dynamic football player,” Summers County coach Nate Tanner said. “He can do several different things. He can run and catch. His tacking ability has gotten a lot better. He’s a solid ball player.”

Perhaps one member of his family that Brown has on his mind when he steps on the field is Tanner himself. The first-year coach is married to former Summers County basketball standout — and Isaiah’s sister — Sierra.

“Sometimes where he is my brother-in-law, it makes it a little difficult at times, but he’s done a fairly good job understanding that in that setting I’m not his brother,” Tanner said. “Although Sierra gets on me at times. I may be a little more critical of him than others.”

Whatever Tanner is saying, it’s working.

Brown has helped the Bobcats to a 4-0 start and all the way up to No. 3 in the WVSSAC Class-AA polls.

“We haven’t been that high in like forever,” Brown said. “To be in the top 5 is just an incredible thing for our community.

“My freshman year we were 0-10; my sophomore year we were 5-5,” Brown said. “Last year we were good, and this year we’re getting to our full potential.”

Summers will host Class A No. 5 Greenbrier West (4-0) on Friday night.

“They’re one of the top teams in the state,” Tanner said. “It’s going to be another battle.”
