Cox named Register-Herald Player of the Week

Corey Cox has plenty of experience in Greenbrier West’s offensive attack, but his workload has increased this season.

That’s part of the difference that comes with a position change.

Cox, a senior, has seen his carries go up with his move from dive back to tailback.

“It’s a lot different, because when I was a dive back I was used to getting the ball about eight times a game,” Cox said. “So now I’ve got to pick up the slack and I’ve got to hit the holes more.”

It certainly appears Cox is getting the hang of his new responsibility.

Thanks to his four-touchdown night in last Friday’s 55-0 win over Independence, Cox has been named The Register-Herald Player of the Week. The 6-foot-1, 170-pounder ran for 95 yards and TDs of 4, 5 and 5 yards, and also caught a 34-yard touchdown passes as the Class A No. 1 Cavaliers improved to 3-0 on the season.

“He has been a starter for us for a couple years now,” West coach Lewis McClung said. “He moved over from dive back to tailback for us and is doing a good job this year. Believe it or not, it is a little different going from dive back to tailback. He has started to lower his pads better and he’s hitting the holes a little better.”

Cox has also been a major player on defense, which has allowed only seven points this season.

“Corey is a main cog for our defense. He does a good job for us at defensive end.”

The Cavs will travel to Buffalo Friday night. The Bison were the only team to beat West in the regular season last year, thanks to six turnovers.
