STATE TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP: Elmore’s 40 not enough for George Washington; Huntington wins 72-64

CHARLESTON —  Huntington overcame the 40-point effort of George Washington’s Jon Elmore to defeat the Patriots Thursday and advance to the semi-finals of the Boys State Basketball Tournament.

The Highlanders used a balanced scoring attack to roll by the Patriots. Tavian Dunn-Martin led the Highlanders with 19 and Jeffrey Howard added 17. Chancelor Wooding added 11 and Arick Nicks scored 10. The Highlanders bench outscored George Washington (19-7) 17-2 in the win.

Elmore’s performance ranks as the sixth best all-time in State Tournament history.

Huntington (21-4) advances to play Class AAA No. 1 Washington Friday at 5:30 p.m.

NOTRE DAME 63, TUCKER COUNTY 57 (OT)

CHARLESTON — Freshman guard Jarrod West made a big splash in his first trip to the Boys State High School Tournament pouring in 28 points, including seven in the decisive overtime period, to lead Notre Dame past upset-minded Tucker County (17-7) 63-57 Thursday.

West, the son of former West Virginia Mountaineer great Jarrod West, hit 10-of-16 shot attempts and made all five of his 3-point shots to lead the Fighting Irish. Cal Cistaro added a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds for Notre Dame.

Ian Nichols led the Mountain Lions with 17 points, while Derek Zirk added 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Notre Dame (21-4) advances to the semifinals to meet Charleston Catholic Friday at 11:15 a.m.
