CHARLESTON —
Woodrow Wilson’s Ron Kidd has been named Boys Coach of the Year by the Mountain State Athletic Conference.
The MSAC announced its awards and held its skills competitions Saturday during the Night of Champions at the South Charleston Community Center.
Woodrow was 19-4 after winning Saturday’s MSAC championship game with South Charleston. Kidd led the Flying Eagles to Class AAA state titles in 2004 and 2008.
Princeton senior guard Mackenzie Akers is the Girls Player of the Year, while George Washington’s Luke Eddy is the Boys Player of the Year.
Akers is a two-time first-team all-stater for the Tigers and is a Marshall signee.
Scott James of St. Albans and Larry “Bo” Miller of Spring Valley are Girls Co-Coaches of the Year. Will Hosaflook of Ripley is Principal of the Year, and Shawn Wheeler of George Washington is Athletic Director of the Year.
Others honored included recently retired football coaches Ted Spadaro of Princeton, Ralph Hensley of Riverside and John Messinger of South Charleston, and track-cross country coach Bill Posey of Hurricane.
In the skills competitions, Nick Light of Riverside won the slam-dunk event. Spring Valley’s Austin Keyser won the boys free-throw shooting crown and defeated girls free-throw champion Haeley Moore of WInfield to take overall champion.
Greg Herbert, also of Spring Valley, took the boys 3-point shooting competition and downed the girls 3-point winner, Akers of Princeton, for the overall title.
Princeton’s Marisa Mullins and Derek Jennelle won the hot shot event.
