Local roundup: Indy beats Liberty 15-5, 10-0 in doubleheader

Class AA No. 2 Independence rolled past county rival Liberty in a doubleheader sweep Wednesday in Glen Daniel 15-5 and 10-0.

Independence hammered 16 hits and was aided by Liberty miscues in the field to win the opener. Ryan Brandstetter had a grand slam, Brad Huffman had a double and three RBIs and Jeremy McGinnis and Chris Mills added two RBIs each for the Patriots in the game one win.

Dylan Keel led the Raiders with a home run and two RBIs.

Andrue Hughart pitched a four-hit shutout, hit a double and drove in three runs to lead the way for the Patriots in game two and secure the sweep. Dean Milam drove in three runs and Brad Huffman drove in two runs for Independence.

Liberty (5-14) hosts Greater Beckley Christian today. Independence (14-4) hosts James Monroe Friday.

Shady Spring 9, Princeton 3

Shady Spring scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to break the game open and defeat Princeton 9-3 Wednesday at home.

Brian Schack hit a triple and drove in four runs and Michael Hill blasted a home run and scored three times to lead Shady Spring.

Ryan Snodgress pitched six strong innings to get the win and John Linkous closed the door in the seventh for Shady.

Andrew Wilson had three hits to lead Princeton.

Shady Spring (7-9) travels to Greenbrier West today.
