Ron Kidd may have just invented a new offense, or at least employed one you don’t see every day.
Introducing the “Two-Point Offense,” and that doesn’t mean two-point baskets.
Kidd started two point guards Wednesday and the results were plain in a 71-52 win over St. Albans at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. The game wasn’t that close.
Kidd started sophomore Ta-Ron Ayers in place of injured Larry Terry along with regular starting point Andrew Johnson. Obviously, Johnson was playing more of a two-guard, but the results said otherwise.
Ayers had 14 points and 10 assists and Johnson, who did not score, added seven more assists as the Eagles had their way with the outmatched Red Dragons.
“Yeah, I guess we can go with the ‘Two-Point Offense,’” Kidd said after the game. “I like that. It sure did work.”
Ayers and Johnson combined for 17 of Woodrow Wilson’s 21 assists on 29 made baskets in the game.
“That’s a pretty good percentage right there,” Kidd said, looking at the stat sheet. “I thought T (Ayers) and Drew did a great job running the team tonight. They got the ball where it needed to be and kept things under control.”
In addition to combining for 17 assists, the duo had just three turnovers and eight steals (four each).
Cameron Shannon led the Flying Eagles with 23 points and four rebounds and Matt Potter had 12 points.
Shannon certainly liked the double-point look.
“The thing I like about point guards is they just want to make plays,” Shannon said. “And they don’t care whether it’s a pass or a basket. I thought they both did a great job and made things easy on us as scorers.”
“I thought we did our job,” Ayers said. “I’d much rather not score and get 10 assists than the other way around.”
The Flying Eagles started quick and built a 45-28 halftime lead, with Johnson and Ayers combining for 11 assists.
Any hope St. Albans had for a big comeback disappeared in the third. Up 49-30, Shannon ran off eight straight points and Ayers finished a 10-0 flourish wit a fake behind-the-back pass that took away a defender and allowed him to score on an easy layup. That gave the Eagles a 59-30 lead and Kidd started emptying the bench.
Shannon finished 9 of 16 from the floor to help Woodrow finish the game shooting 50 percent (29 of 58).
“When Cam plays like he did tonight, physical and aggressive, I think we are one of the top teams in the state,” Kidd said. “When he doesn’t, we are mediocre. He has to come out like that between the lines every game, not just once-in-a-while. He is a key for us. I don’t want to put pressure on him but we need that Cam every night.”
John Kiser finished with 23 points for St. Albans, which was 20 of 45 from the floor.
Woodrow Wilson now takes to the road for the next two weeks, playing Friday at Lincoln and Saturday at Greenbrier East.
