— Coach Vince Culicerto’s Shady Tigers were looking for something — anything — to build on after a tough 48-7 loss last week to Point Pleasant.

What he found was the duo of Adam Weeks and Houstin Syvertson.

Weeks and Syvertson combined for seven touchdowns and 340 total yards as the Tigers defeated Raleigh County rival Liberty Friday at H.B. Thomas Field.

“It always feels good to get a win,” Weeks said after the game. “The offensive line blocked well. Everyone did a good job.”

Syvertson, a senior running back, got the scoring started early for the Tigers with a pair of touchdowns from 11 and 6 yards out. He then caught a 31-yard pass from Weeks for another score with 7:49 remaining in the second quarter.

Weeks continued to put up yards when he connected with 6-foot-4 receiver Juwan Rowe for a 28-yard touchdown. On the next possession, he would find the senior again from 15 yards out to put the Tigers up 36-7.

Weeks would continue to pick apart the Liberty defense when he and Syvertson connected again for a 10-yard touchdown.

Syvertson wasn’t finished. With 7:42 remaining in the third quarter, he broke free and ran untouched 53 yards for his final score of the game.

Liberty wasn’t going to let its chances of making the playoffs vanish without a fight. The Raiders’ Ryan Moore found paydirt from 17 yards out to bring them back into the game. Liberty would find the end zone two more times on runs by Hunter Wright and Drew Stover, but it wouldn’t be enough.

“Always feels good to get a win, especially over a county rival,” Culicerto said. “The boys faced adversity and we got a little too tight. Liberty had a good game plan.

“We settled down and started playing ball and starting laying licks. I’m proud of our boys.”

Liberty was led by Wright, the freshman quarterback who threw for 119 yards and a touchdown, and ran for another.

Shady (5-4) is at home next week against Class AAA No. 6 Musselman, who were defeated by Martinsburg 73-0 on Friday night.

The game will kick off at 7 p.m.

“It’s going to be a cold one next week, but we don’t really care. We’ll be ready to take care of business,” Syvertson said with a smile.

Liberty, which was all but eliminated from playoff contention, fell to 5-4 and welcomes in Class AA rival Wyoming East next week.
