Latest WVSSAC football rankings released

12 local teams in playoff mix

With two weeks remaining in the WVSSAC high school football season, the race for the playoffs is hotter than ever before.

The latest WVSSAC ratings were released Tuesday, with nine area teams in position to make the playoffs, and three others on the edge.

In Class AAA, Woodrow Wilson (6-3) seems to have a playoff spot locked up. The Flying Eagles came in at No. 10 this week. Oak Hill (5-3) suffered from a one-point loss to Bluefield Friday. The Red Devils are now No. 18.

Those appear to be the only to area AAA clubs to have a shot. Shady Spring (No. 23), Greenbrier East (No. 26) and Princeton (No. 34) are out of the mix.

In Class AA, Bluefield (7-1) is close to the top at No. 3. Nicholas County (5-3) is No. 9, in a fight for a home game, and Summers County (5-3) is No. 12. Wyoming East (5-3) came in at No. 13, while Liberty (5-3) was No. 15.

Westside (4-4) is just outside the top 16 at No. 17. Independence (No. 23), River View (No. 26), Mount View (No. 30), James Monroe (No. 34) and PikeView (No. 38) appear to be out of the mix.

Greenbrier West (8-1) is No. 3 in Class A, while Valley (7-1) is No. 9. Meadow Bridge (7-2) is No. 12. Midland Trail (5-3) is still just outside the top 16 at No. 18, while Montcalm (No. 24), Richwood (No. 24) and Fayetteville (No. 37) are out.

The top 16 teams at the end of the season will earn playoff spots.
