Some things are easier than handing out The Register-Herald’s game balls this week.
Performing brain surgery on yourself comes to mind.
There were several award-worthy performances by area high school football players in Week 7. Alas, there is room for just five, and there certainly were players who shone a little brighter than others.
Zach Bennett (Richwood) — The Lumberjacks quarterback had a big all-around game against Tygarts Valley. He ran 12 times for 253 yards and three touchdowns, threw a 25-yard touchdown pass and returned an interception 21 yards for another score.
Jalen Jones (Oak Hill) — The junior speedster helped the Red Devils further validate their status as a legitimate Class AAA team. Jones ran for 325 yards and scored two touchdowns as No. 10 Oak Hill beat No. 8 Point Pleasant.
Mike Mullens (Westside) — After being shut out in the first half by Tug Valley, the Renegades exploded for 34 points after the break. Mullens was a big part of that, rushing 19 times for 246 yards and four touchdowns. Three of those scores came in a fourth-quarter shootout, in which the teams combined for six TDs in a 7-minute span.
Jordan Palchesko (Shady Spring) — The senior back ran 13 times for 148 yards and four touchdowns as the Tigers (3-3) routed James Monroe on Homecoming night. He also made three catches for 52 yards and had two interceptions.
Jake Parker (Meadow Bridge) — Stop if you’ve heard this one before. Parker had yet another 300-yard game, going for 314 and four more touchdowns as the Wildcats dominated Grundy, Va.
