Some sections still undecided

After the WESTEST is completed Thursday morning, state athletes are free to resume their seasons.

For many baseball teams, that means picking up where they left off in sectional tournaments. While some teams have locked up titles, other sections remain unresolved.

Here is a rundown of what will happen Thursday:

n In Class AAA, Woodrow Wilson will meet Oak Hill at Shady Spring High for the Region 3, Section 1 title. That game will start at 5 p.m. If Oak Hill, which eliminated Shady Spring Saturday, wins, a second game will be played

The Region 3, Section 2 winner will be determined with a winner-take-all game between Greenbrier East and Princeton in Fairlea. The game will begin at 6 p.m. The winner of this section has gone on to represent the region in the state tournament each of the last three seasons. Princeton beat Nitro for the state championship last June.

n In Class AA, things are still unsettled in Region 3, Section 4. PikeView was leading James Monroe on Friday when rain forced the game to be postponed. The game was also rained out Saturday, so its completion is set for 5 p.m. Thursday at PikeView. If James Monroe wins, a decisive game would be played 20 minutes later.

Area schools that have already claimed sectional titles are Independence, Wyoming East and Mount View in Class AA and Greenbrier West, Fayetteville, Valley and Man in Class A.

Class AA regional semifinals will be played Tuesday, May 21, with the championship game set for Thursday, May 22. Class A Region 3 will follow that same schedule.

Sectional champions are permitted to play two warmup games starting Thursday. Independence has already scheduled a pair, hosting Man at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Greenbrier West at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Valley will host Sissonville at 4 p.m. Thursday and Wyoming East at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
