Woodrow Wilson’s climb up the state rankings continued Monday as the Flying Eagles made the jump to No. 2 in the latest Associated Press high school boys basketball poll.

A convincing win over South Charleston Saturday in the Mountain State Athletic Conference championship game allowed the Flying Eagles (17-4) — who were not even ranked in the first poll of the season after a 4-4 start — to jump over South Charleston (18-2) and into the second spot in Class AAA. Martinsburg (19-2), though, held tight at No. 1, receiving nine out of 10 first-place votes — South Charleston getting the other.

Greenbrier East (17-2) slipped into a tie for sixth with Parkersburg South after falling to Princeton last week. The Tigers, who followed that big win with a lopsided loss to Huntington, received one vote and are tied for 12th.

The Spartans will have an opportunity to gain some respect with a meeting at South Charleston scheduled for Thursday.

Bluefield (17-2) — which has only lost to Class AAAs Greenbrier East and Princeton — remained a unanimous choice for No. 1 in Class AA, ahead of Fairmont Senior and Robert C. Byrd.

Westside (16-6) moved up one spot to No. 5, while Wyoming County rival Wyoming East (14-7) stayed at No. 7. Webster County (14-3) was No. 8, and Summers County received two votes to come in tied for 13th.

Greater Beckley Christian (14-3) was the highest area team in Class A at No. 6. The Crusaders will face No. 4 Magnolia later this week with a chance to perhaps move farther up the list.

Valley (14-6) was No. 9 this week, moving up one spot. Greenbrier West received one vote and tied for 13th.

Despite finishing a perfect 22-0 and winning five games in six days last week, Greenbrier East was no longer a unanimous No. 1 in the Class AAA girls poll. The defending state champions were still firmly on top, but they received eight of the nine first-place votes, with No. 2 Spring Valley picking up the other.

Princeton (13-7) was the other area team in the poll, coming in at No. 7. The Spartans and Tigers could meet in a possible sectional title game on Friday. Greenbrier East, the top seed in Region 3, Section 2, will face the Oak Hill-Shady Spring winner in one Wednesday semifinal, while Princeton, the No. 2 seed, will face Woodrow Wilson in the other semifinal.

Westside (20-1) was in a similar position in Class AA. The Renegades, who won the Class AA title last year, are a clear No. 1 with eight first-place votes, but No. 2 Bridgeport got a vote for the top spot this week, as well. Another area team, Nicholas County (17-3), is third.

Summers County (14-8) dropped four spots but held on to a top 10 spot at No. 10.

Westside, which posted a lopsided win over Summers County last week, is the No. 1 seed in the Region 3, Section 1 tournament and will face the winner of Liberty and Independence tonight. Summers County, the No. 2 seed, could get a rematch with Westside in the championship game if it can knock off Wyoming East tonight.

Nicholas County is the top seed in Region 4, Section 1 and will face the Herbert Hoover-Poca winner in a semifinal game on Wednesday.

The highest-ranked area team in Class A is Pocahontas County (15-5), which came in tied with Parkersburg Catholic at No. 6. Fayetteville (15-5) was No. 8, while Meadow Bridge, which upset the Pirates last week, moved into the poll at No. 10. Valley is No. 11, the first team on the others receiving votes list.

Pocahontas County is the top seed in Region 2, Section 2 and will play the East Hardy-Paw Paw winner on Thursday.

Meadow Bridge, the third seed in Region 3, Section 1, will play No. 2 seed Valley in a semifinal game tonight. Fayetteville is the top seed in that section and will play Midland Trail in tonight’s other semifinal.

In the final Register-Herald power rankings that appeared in Monday’s paper, Wyoming East was inadvertently left off the list. The Warriors received 21 points and should have been ranked seventh in the boys rankings. Valley (11) should have been eighth, Greenbrier West (7) ninth and Liberty (6) 10th.
