George Washington stuns Preston County

BECKLEY — The George Washington Lady Patriots improved to 11-5 on the season with a 59-48 victory over the No. 7 Preston County Knights on Thursday night in the opening round of the Big Atlantic Classic.

The Knights came out firing on all cylinders early in the first quarter behind a pair of buckets from senior guard Carly Kelley. However, George Washington powered back behind the hot outside shooting of senior point guard Rachel Ward.

Ward’s 3-pointer late in the first quarter opened up an 8-6 lead for the Patriots. She then hit another at the start of the 2nd to open up the second and set the tone for a 21-9 quarter in favorite of George Washington.

Ward scored a game-high 16 points on the game and added 4 steals in the victory.

George Washington used a speed advantage to score 18 points in the paint.

The Patriots had a scary moment late in the third quarter when Alanna Mobayed charged into the lane and collided with a Preston defender and hit the ground head first. Mobayed, who missed games earlier this season with a concussion, received attention from the trainer and had to be helped off the court.

Preston rallied back in the second half, outscoring George Washington 31-29, but the deficit created in the 2nd quarter was too much for the Knights to overcome.

Preston had three players in double figures: Alexis Schoolcraft (11), Jesse Feather (11) and Mary Braham (16).

George Washington’s Kelli Jo Harrison had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Patriots will move on to play Parkersburgh South Saturday at 4 p.m. while Preston will play Nicholas County today at 2 p.m.
