State golf tournament starts today

More than 120 golfers will compete in the West Virginia high school tournament starting today on the Trent Jones Course at Oglebay Park in Wheeling.

Locally, 25 golfers will be vying for a state championship. Five area teams will be competing for a team championship.

Shady Spring finished second in the Class AAA Region 3 tournament last week. The Tigers will be represented by Drew Green, Landon Perry, Ryan Albaugh and Dakota McComas.

Qualifying as AAA inviduals were Oak Hill’s Craig Buchanan, who took medalist honors at the regional with a 64 at Lewisburg Elks, and Greenbrier East’s Madison Erskine.

Westside’s team of Drew Bragg, Hunter Owens, Corey Bowles and Kaitlyn Saunders won the Class AA Region 3 title. Wyoming East was the runner-up, comprised of Dakota Hood, Hunter Justus, Bryce Staton and Chase Pressley.

Individuals will be Doug Miller of Bluefield and Ike Judy of James Monroe.

In Class A, Richwood won the Region 3 title. The Lumberjacks will be represented by Ryan Bennett, Braiden Johnson, Dustin Seabolt and Mason Mullens.

Greenbrier West (Austin Ranson, Gus Patterson, Chandler Fitzwater and Justin Estep) was the runner-up.

Playing individually will be Montcalm’s Jimmy McPherson.

The tournament will start at 9 a.m. today and conclude Wednesday.
