ROUNDUP: McDowell’s 24 lift Liberty over Independence

The host Liberty Raiders got a 24-point performance from Tre McDowell to defeat their county rival 72-56 Wednesday.

Trevor McGhee added 21 points for Liberty, including three bombs from behind the arc, and Devin Acord scored 12 points.

Freshman Tyler Haga led the Patriots with 17 points, while Andrue Hughart added 10 points and Aaron Hunt scored eight points.

Liberty (1-0) travels to Chapmanville Saturday at 8:30 p.m. Independence (0-1) travels to Westside Tuesday.

FAIRLEA — Rondale Watson scored 22 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and dished out six assists as Class AAA No. 6 Greenbrier East opened the season with a lopsided win over Bath County, Va.

Obi Romeo added 13 points, 11 boards and six blocked shots. Josh Tunstalle scored 13 and Tyler Canterbury 10, and point guard Isaiah Kinder had seven assists.

Bath (1-2) shot 12 of 63 (19 percent).

The Spartans (1-0) host Westside at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Westside 65, Bluefield 41


CLEAR FORK — Hope Lester had 31 points and 14 rebounds and Faith Davis scored 17 to lead Class AA No. 1 Westside (1-0) to a 65-41 season-opening win over Bluefield (1-2) Wednesday.

The Lady Renegades, who lost in the Class AA final last season, jumped out to a 31-21 halftime lead and never looked back, getting an 11 point, six steal effort from Megan Endicott in the victory.

Destiny Sims scored 16 in the losing effort for Bluefield.

Westside will play at PikeView on Monday.

Summers County 94, James Monroe 74

LINDSIDE — The Summers County Lady Bobcats raced out to a 29-9 first-quarter lead and cruised past James Monroe 94-74 Wednesday.

Brandy Morrison led the victors with a game-high 28 points and Avery Pivont added a double-double scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

Freshman Whittney Justice scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while twin sister Brittney chipped in 11 points and also had eight rebounds.

Makayla Moran led the Lady Mavericks with 15 points and Carter Shiflet had 11 points.

Summers County (2-0) will host Webster County Friday in the annual Rogers Oil Classic.

FAYETTEVILLE — Fayetteville defeated Valley 72-49 in a clash of county rivals Wednesday behind the 18 points of freshman Kendall Malay. Malay also collected nine rebounds and had five steals.

Avina Sedlock added 12 points and Madie Pritt chipped in 9 more for the Lady Pirates.

Kylie Wood grabbed eight rebounds for Fayetteville.

Valley was led by Kelsey Bird with 17 points, while Abby Buchan and Jersey Thompson added nine points apiece.

Fayetteville (3-0) travels to Greenbrier East tonight.

Mykenzie Martin scored a game-high 17 points to lead Nicholas County and Makayla Willis had 14.
