Oak Hill stops Pt. Pleasant, rolls to a 34-14 win

From Staff Reports

The Point Pleasant Big Blacks rolled into John P. Duda stadium Friday for a Class AAA top ten clash with Oak Hill on senior night.

But the Red Devils came out on top, winning 34-14.

Class AAA No. 10 Oak Hill came in to the game on a four game winning streak after dropping its season opener, while Class AAA No. 8 Point Pleasant was looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season to Brooke.

Point Pleasant got on the scoreboard first when Aden Yates hit Chase Walton with a 10-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead.

The Red Devils responded in the second quarter when Jalen Jones broke free on a 66-yard touchdown run to cut the Big Blacks lead to 7-6 at the half.

Point Pleasant opened the second half with a quick drive deep into Red Devils territory, but the stingy Red Devils defense, coming off two straight shut-outs, forced a turnover on downs.

The huge stop sparked the Red Devils offense which responded with an impressive drive culminating in a Deon Marion one-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown to take their first lead at 12-7 with 5:15 left in the third quarter.

A fired up Red Devils defense responded with a three and out to give the ball back to the offense. The offense cashed in on a eight-yard K.K Goodman run and a Marion two-point conversion to take a 20-7 lead at the end of three quarters.

Oak Hill looked for the knock-out blow with an onside kick that was unsuccessful. The Big Blacks drove the ball 48 yards for a score to make the score 20-14 early in the fourth quarter.

After a Red Devils fumble inside the Point Pleasant 10-yard line, Point Pleasant looked to take the lead. However, the Red Devil’s Antonio Gray came up big with a 24-yard interception return for a touchdown to make the score 26-14 with 7:18 left in the game.

The Oak Hill defense refused to give the Big Blacks any hope of a comeback and the offense put the game away on a Jalen Jones 29-yard scamper for the 34-14 victory.

Jones finished the night with 325 yards on the ground to lead the Red Devils.

Oak Hill (5-1) has four games remaining in the regular season - all on the road. The Red Devils travel to Lewis County next week before winding up with trips to Bluefield, PikeView and Lincoln County.

Point Pleasant (4-2) goes to Ravenswood next week.
