Roundup: Independence splits in Wooden Bat Tournament

BECKLEY — PREP BASEBALL

Independence 4, Bluefield 2

St. Albans 10, Independence 4

Independence made the most of its five hits in a 4-2 win over Bluefield in the Treadway Wooden Bat Tournament in Coal City.

Andrue Hughart batted 2 for 3 with an RBI. Jeremy McGinnis drove in two runs.

Justin Mariotti homered for Bluefield. Andrew Siegel and Logan Lineberry each had two hits.

St. Albans defeated Independence 10-4 in the other game. Phoenix Shrewbury keyed the win with a triple, double, single and two RBIs.

Brandon Huffman homered and drove in three runners for the Patriots.

Independence hosts Westside at 5 p.m. Monday.

BLUEFIELD — Chad Lester hit an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Richlands the win over Fayetteville in the semifinals of the Coppinger Baseball Tournament Saturday.

Brian Gore, Jake Alton and Aaron Krise each had two hits for Fayetteville.

The Pirates also played Friday, downing Van 12-1 behind three doubles from Will Dooley and a home run, double and single by Trey Farris. Brian Gore and Jake Holland added two hits apiece.

Pitcher Jake Holland went all six innings, striking out 12 and walking none. The game was ended via the mercy rule.

Fayetteville plays a 4 p.m. game Monday at Webster County.

CLEAR FORK — Breyer Morgan homered,doubled and singled as the Renegades swept a doubleheader from Tug Valley.

Dakota Bailey had four hits and two RBIs on the afternoon, while Jeffery Brown and Trevor Anderson also drove in two runs apiece.

Morgan and Drew Bragg recorded victories on the mound for the Renegades, who will travel Monday to Independence.

Martin tripled, singled and drove in a run. Colby Johnson added a two-run double.

Kaitlyn Sisler and Morgan Funk had two hits apiece as Fayetteville upended host Woodrow Wilson 10-6 Saturday.

Kayla Patrick added a double for the Pirates. Cara MacAulay had two hits for Woodrow, while Kayla Lawson contributed a double.

Woodrow took a 9-6 win Friday night, keyed by pitcher Shannon Undrwood’s four-hitter. Maggie Cook had two hits, MacAulay doubled and Courtney Legowski hit a home run.

Shelby Dorsey tripled and Ashley Gilkerson doubled for Fayetteville.

The Pirates also played Huntington on Saturday and dropped a 9-0 decision. Kelsey Norris had two hits in a losing cause.

Fayetteville (9-12) will host Richwood at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The Pirates will also host a Class A sectional, starting Wednesday. Games and times will be determined later.

Woodrow Wilson will host the Class AAA Region 3, Section 2 tournament Monday.

The Flying Eagles host Oak Hill at 5 p.m., with the loser taking on top seed Shady Spring at 7 p.m.

Sherman’s Tide rolled as pitcher Tori May tossed a one-hitter against host Liberty and Kyle Wells scattered six hits to down Nicholas.

Lauren Young and Sammi Sams each had two hits as Nicholas slipped by Liberty in the other game of the day. Liberty had 10 hits, led by three apiece from Ashton Mullins and Stephanie Griffith. Brianna Haney added a triple for the Raiders, whil Griffith an Savannah Caron both doubled.

Liberty (7-12) enters sectional tournament play Monday at Independence. Summers County and the host Patriots open at 5 p.m., with the winner taking on the Raiders 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
