Roundup: East wins in OT; Lady Panthers roll

Greenbrier East 2, Shady Spring 1 (OT)

Cordell Bostic scored on an assist from Stephan Marr-Madariaga 3:47 into overtime to give the Spartans the victory in the opening round of Class AAA Region 3, Section 2 tournament play.

Shady struck first in the opening half when Nick Bartusiak scored on a direct kick for a 1-0 lead. East would get the equalizer on an own goal off a Shady Spring defender a for 1-1 tie at the end of regulation.

Spartans goalkeeper Mac Brackenrich had 10 saves, while Jonathan Beckett had eight saves for the Tigers.

Greenbrier East advances to face top-seeded Oak Hill at 5 p.m. today at the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Youth Sports Complex.


PikeView 10, Wyoming East 0

BLUEFIELD — Freshman Kari Shrewsbury had a hat trick to lead the PikeView Lady Panthers to a shutout in the opening round of Class AA-A Region 3, Section 2 play.

Brooke Baker and Lexie O’Dell added two goals apiece, while Kassie Catron added one goal and two assists for the Lady Panthers.

Shyann Carr and Tyler Farmer chipped one goal and one assist each.

PikeView (13-5-1) plays the winner of Bluefield/Mingo Central at 5 p.m. Thursday.


Woodrow-Princeton correction

In Monday’s Register-Herald in our weekly Fab Five rankings, the Woodrow Wilson-Princeton matchup was listed as being played at Woodrow Wilson. Friday’s game will actually be played at Princeton, and it will be senior night for the Tigers.
