Greenbrier West has finally scaled to the top of the state coaches rankings, with a little bit of company.

West is tied with East Fairmont for the No. 1 ranking in Class AA/A, according to the latest poll released on wvmat.com. East Fairmont was a AAA school last season.

There are also ties for third and fifth. Clay County and Wirt County are co-No. 3, while Fairmont Senior and North Marion are knotted for the fifth spot.

Like East Fairmont, Fairmont Senior and North Marion were in Class AAA last year.

The Cavaliers have won championships their last four times out. The streak was extended at the WSAZ Invitational last weekend; they didn’t win the overall title - that went to AAA No. 1 Huntington - but West did finish second and was crowned the Class AA/A champion.

Also, Independence is ranked seventh in the latest poll. The Patriots placed ninth at the WSAZ.

In Class AAA, Shady Spring retained its No. 8 ranking. The Tigers were third at the WSAZ.
