Field set for boys state basketball tournament

The 100th anniversary of the West Virginia Boys Basketball Tournament will take place next week, and four local teams will be representing the area.

Beckley will once again be able to prove it’s worth as the “City of Champions” as both the Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagles and Greater Beckley Christian Crusaders will be taking to the hardwood in the capital city.

Woodrow, the AAA No. 2 seed will be taking on No. 7 Hurricane at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday morning. The No. 5 Crusaders will battle No. 4 Tucker County in the nightcap at 9 p.m.

On Thursday, Class AA No. 3 Westside will play No. 6 Bridgeport at 9:30 a.m. and will be followed just a few hours later at 5:30 p.m. when No. 1 Bluefield and No. 8 North Marion take to the court.

Martinsburg was named the AAA No. 1 seed, followed by Beckley, South Charleston, Washington, Parkersburg South, Morgantown, Hurricane and Huntington.

In AA, Bluefield was rewarded with the top seed followed by Fairmont Senior, Westside, Robert C. Byrd, Tolsia, Brudgeport, Scott and North Marion.

Finally, the defending AA champion Tug Valley was announced as the No. 1 Class A seed, followed by Magnolia, Charleston Catholic, Tucker County, Greater Beckley, Buffalo, Wheeling Central and Notre Dame.

Games will run Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with championships being played on Saturday at the Charleston Civic Center.
