— WELCH — Austin Cordell pitched a complete-game five-hitter while Hunter Moses and Kevin Cottle knocked in three runs apiece to lead the PikeView Panthers to a 13-2 win over the Mount View Golden Knights in a Class AA Region 3 semifinal game at Nick Shaffron Field.

“He (Cordell) was dominant in the strike zone early in the count, he had nice control of the strike zone and we were aggressive (at the plate) early in the count,” said PikeView head coach Josh Wyatt. “We went into a bad spell there for about a week-and-a-half, probably about 10 days. We were swinging the bat well, but not at good pitches.

“I think some guys have put a lot of work in, in the cage, found pitches that they like and some of the younger ones are understanding we’re up there to hit pitches we like that are in the zone, early in the count. I thought we did a fantastic job doing that tonight.”

The Panthers came out aggressive and wasted little time getting on the board against Golden Knights’ starting pitcher Bryan Villanueava. Moses drew a game-opening walk, stole second and came home on an error that put Cordell aboard. Courtesy runner Adam Holdren scored on Jon Clark’s two-out single to make it 2-0 before Mount View came to the plate.

PikeView added a three-spot in the second. Carter Shrewsbury singled and Keian Lee walked. Shrewsbury raced home on Moses’ single to left. Lee and Holdren both came around on Cottle’s two-out hit to center to make it 5-0.

Cordell was tough on the Mount View batters. After leadoff hitter Villanueava reached on an error, Cordell sat down six straight Knights, five via strikeout, including the side in order, on strikes, in the second.

PikeView continued tacking runs on the board, placing four digits in the third, chasing Villanueava. Maurice Brown took the ball for Mount View and ended the bloodletting. Moses knocked in one run and Jordan Hardin two as each player singled.

The Panthers’ lead stood at 9-0 heading to the bottom of the third.

The Golden Knights picked up their first hit in the third, a bunt by Villanueava that moved Caleb Webb, who had walked, to third. Webb scored Mount View’s first run when Jarrett Cochran singled up the middle.

Trying to avoid ending the game early due to the 10-run mercy rule, Mount View rallied in the fifth. Webb led off with a double to right and pinch runner Jamari Perry scored on Tashaan Vineyard’s two-out single to right. Vineyard went to second on the throw from the outfield and Austin Dash came on as a pinch runner.

Dash dashed to third on a wild pitch, but the game concluded when Cordell fanned Maurice Brown, who fouled off three pitches after getting two strikes, to end the game and send PikeView to the regional championship game.

Moses, Clark and Shrewsbury each had a pair of hits to lead the 11-hit PikeView attack.

Cordell picked up the win as he gave up two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out eight.

PikeView (23-10) will take on Independence (18-8) in the regional final at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Coal City.
