Westside 8, Independence 1

Cassadee Blankenship allowed just two hits and Kasey Walls blasted a three-run homer to lead the Lady Renegades past Independence in the opening round of regional play. Blankenship had 10 strikeouts on the night.

Stephanie Brown added a double and an RBI and Kelsey Walls had a triple and an RBI for Westside.

Westside travels to James Monroe next Thursday for the Region 3 championship game.

WELCH — Mikayla Wickline continued her dominance on the mound, firing a no-hitter and striking out 13 batters over five innings to lead James Monroe past Mount View Thursday in a Class AA Region 3 semifinal.

Johnna Dunbar had two hits and four RBIs, while Tierra Carr added three hits and three RBIs for the Lady Mavericks.

The Lady Mavericks also received three RBIs from Kelsey Christian.

James Monroe advances to the regional championship next Thursday, hosting the Westside Lady Renegades.

Liberty 7, Summers County 3

The Liberty Raiders broke open a close game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and went on to defeat Summers County in the opening game of the Class AA Region 3, Section 1 tournament.

The Raiders scored all four runs with two outs on singles by Dylan Keel and Seth Prince that drove in two runners each. Keel finished the game with three RBIs.

Jaquan Ayers had a double and two RBIs and Matt Ryan added two doubles and an RBI for the Bobcats.

The Raiders lost the nightcap to Independence and will play Summers County again today in the elimination format.

SETH — Arik McGinnis and Druw Bowen put on a pitching clinic in leading Valley to a sweep of Sherman and the Class A Region 3, Section 3 championship.

In the first game, McGinnis had 15 strikeouts in a four-hit complete game. The senior was also 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

Bowen also homered for the Greyhounds. Four other Valley players had two hits apiece.

In the clincher, Bowen struck out 12 in a complete-game shutout. The freshman added his second homer of the day to aid his own cause.

John Riddle hit a triple and drove in a run.

Valley (20-7) will take on either Tug Valley or Man in the region semifinals Tuesday, May 21.

CLEAR FORK — Derek Thornton smacked a double, a home run and drove in three runs to lead defending Class AA state champion Wyoming East (20-5) past Westside in the opening game of the Class AA Region 3, Section 2 tournament Thursday.

Thornton also picked up the pitching win by combining with Austin Canada on a four-hit shutout.

Wyoming East catcher Zach Whitten drilled two doubles and had an RBI, and Hunter Simmons added three hits, including a double, and an RBI.

Dakota Paynter had two hits for Westside and Dakota Bailey had a double.

The teams will meet again at 1 p.m. today. Westside must win twice to avoid being eliminated.

FAYETTEVILLE — The Fayetteville Pirates rolled past Richwood behind two no-hit pitching performances Thursday to capture the Class A Region 3, Section 2 title.

Both games ended in the fifth inning via the mercy rule.

Aaron Krise tossed the no-hitter in the first game, and Josh Long had a double and four RBIs to lead the Pirates. Jake Holland and Brian Gore each added two hits and Krise had one.

It was the third no-hitter of the season for Krise.

In the second game, it was Trey Phares’ turn on the mound. He got plenty of help from his offense, which exploded for 12 runs in the third inning.

Holland led the hitting barrage with four hits. Krise added three, including a double, while Gore and James Criss also had three hits for the Pirates.

Fayetteville (17-13) advances to regional play against the winner of Section 1.
