Local roundup: Lady Patriots rally past Liberty 7-6, wrap up sectional crown

Independence 7, Liberty 6

For the second night in a row, the Independence Lady Patriots rallied in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Liberty and capture the Region 3, Section 1 crown Tuesday.

Elizabeth Epling drove in the tying run in the seventh and Courtney Haga singled home the go-ahead run to lift the Patriots to victory.

Brooke Foley added two hits, including a double, while Katie Lilly and Kelsey Hart added one RBI apiece for Independence.

Makayla Hosaflook smacked a home run and Andrea Roles added a double and two RBIs for LIberty.

Independence (6-11) opens Class AA Region 3 play against the winner of Westside and Wyoming East on May 9.

The Liberty Lady Raiders scored 10 runs on seven hits to defeat Summers County Tuesday and advance to the championship round of Class AA Region 3, Section 1 play.

Andrea Roles and Sam Pauley each had two hits and one RBI and Makayla Hosaflook smacked a double and drove in two runs for Liberty.

Pauley also picked up the win pitching a four-hit shut-out for the Lady Raiders.

Brittany Bennett and Bre Justice had two hits each for Summers County.

Liberty advanced to play Independence in the championship round.

MEADOW BRIDGE — Montcalm squuezed out a 16-15 victory over Meadow Bridge in a slugfest in the opening round of Class A Region 3, Section 1 action Tuesday.

Courtney Mullins led Meadow Bridge with two double, a triple and six RBIs and Ally Redden had three RBIs.

Meadow Bridge plays the loser of Montcalm and Greenbrier West today.

Alexis DeMoss, Mackenzie Milam, Katie Snodgress, Michelle Snodgress and McKenzie Severt each had two hits for Shady Spring.

Shady Spring (19-2) plays Woodrow Wilson twice today.

SUMMERSVILLE — Allison Rager surrendered just two runs over 12 innings and the Herbert Hoover bats pounded out 25 hits to sweep past Nicholas County and capture the Class AA Region 4, Section 1 crown Tuesday.

Rager pitched a two-hit shut-out and had three hits in game one, while Mikayla Craze and McKenzie Edmonds added three hits apiece for the Huskies.

Game two was more of the same, good pitching by Rager and red hot Hoover bats. Rager again had three hits, while Mikayla Craze, McKenzie Edmonds and Ashleigh Tignor had two hits apiece.

Herbert Hoover advances to regional play against Sissonville next week.

   Drew D’Angelo tore the leather off the ball, going 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and 3 RBIs in a 14-4 beatdown of rival Shady Spring.

   Wyatt Adkins went 4-4 with two singles, a double and a triple.

   Brian Sexton pitched a complete game, striking out four.

   Shady Spring’s Brendan Schack had a 3-run home run in the top of the fifth.

   Shady will welcome Woodrow Wilson tonight.

Austin Ransom, Jared Jennings, Adam Tygrett and Dustin Yoakum each had one hit for the Cavaliers.

Greenbrier West (10-9) travels to Summers County.

NEW RICHMOND — The Warriors exploded for eight first inning runs and Austin Canada pitched a three-hit shut-out to lead Wyoming East past James Monroe Tuesday.

Canada helped his own cause with three hits and an RBI, while catcher Zach Whitten aided his pitcher with three hits also, including a home run  and three RBIs.

Christian Hedinger and Chase Pressley added two RBIs apiece for the Warriors.

Wyoming East (18-4) hosts PikeView today.

Tyler Hall drove in three runs for the Warriors.

Woodrow will visit Shady Spring at 6:30 p.m. today.

n CORRECTION

The pitcher for Wyoming East in Monday’s game against Liberty was named in error. Derek Thornton was the winning pitcher scattering five hits and giving up just one run. The win was Thornton’s  29th  career victory tying Travis McKinney for the most in school history.
