SHADY SPRING — Morgan Hylton scored a game-high 17 points and Kelsea Collins added 14 to lead the Shady Spring Lady Tigers past Oak Hill 65-24 in the opening round of the Class AAA Region 3, Section 2 tournament. Hylton finished the night with five 3-point baskets.

Kaylee Dickenson continued her steady play, scoring 11 points, and McKenzie Severt added nine points for Shady Spring.

Kaitlyn Goodman led the Lady Red Devils with 10 points.

Shady Spring (8-14) advances to play Class AAA No. 1 Greenbrier East Wednesday at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building.

Independence 43, Liberty 41

Independence opened up Class AA Region 3, Section 1 play with a thrilling 43-41 win over the Liberty Lady Raiders Monday in Coal City.

Stacey Williams had put Liberty up 41-40 late on a rebound and a putback score, only to see freshman Jessica Lilly sink a game-winning 3-point bucket with under five seconds remaining to lift the Patriots.

Emily Fedukovich led the Lady Patriots with 13 points. Kelsey Hart added 10 and Krista Greene nine.

Krista Harris had 10 steals for Independence.

Liberty was led by Katie McGinnis with a game-high 15 points, and Williams with 12 points.

Independence advances to play Class AA No. 1 Westside tonight at Westside High School.

Montcalm 28,

Greater Beckley Christian 19

MONTCALM — The points were scarce, but the outcome was decisive as the Montcalm Lady Generals opened up the Class A Region 3, Section 2 tournament with a 28-19 victory over Greater Beckley Christian.

Montcalm (7-14) limited its visitors to five points or less in each quarter, though neither team reached double-figure scoring in any of the four periods.

The Lady Generals were tied 5-5 with the Crusaders after eight minutes, then outscored their visitors to take a 14-10 halftime lead.

Seniors Leslie Kelley and Miranda Kendrick led Montcalm’s attack with eight and seven points, respectively.

The top scorer for Greater Beckley Christian (3-19) was Kayla Hill with eight points.

Montcalm travels to Tug Valley this evening for a sectional semifinal contest. The championship is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday.
