Woodrow wrestlers enjoy good day at Hurricane

BECKLEY — The Woodrow Wilson wrestling team wasn’t able to be at Chick-fil-A Thursday for the restaurant’s weekly Spirit Night, which this time benefited the grapplers from Beckley.

That’s because the Flying Eagles were competing in Hurricane, and the time there was just as profitable.

Woodrow picked up wins over the host Redskins and George Washington, which is ranked No. 10 in the state. The score with GW was tied 36-36, but Woodrow won via tiebreaker.

The Eagles defeated Hurricane 51-23, winning six matches via pinfall, two by forfeit and another by injury default.

The Flying Eagles also fell 51-21 to Cabell Midland.

Woodrow is off this weekend, but will host a middle school duals tournament today starting at 9:30 a.m.

There will be lots of wrestling in Greenbrier County today.

In addition to Class AA/A state champion Greenbrier West’s season-opening Cavalier Clash at 10:30  a.m. in Charmco, Greenbrier East will host the Greenbrier Duals at 11 a.m. Oak Hill, Wyoming East, Covington (Va.), Harrisonburg (Va.) and Roanoke Catholic (Va.) will join the host Spartans.

Greenbrier West will welcome Calhoun County, Wirt County, East Fairmont, Keyser and George Washington for its tournament.

-----

The annual Russ Ward Christmas Tournament will start at 9:30 a.m. today in Richwood. The host Lumberjacks will welcome Nicholas County, Fayetteville, Webster County, Braxton County and Greenbrier West’s B team to the Wood Shed. Fifteen matches will be wrestled on two mats.

There will also be a middle school division, with Fayetteville, Summersville, Hamlin and Richwood entered.

-----

Shady Spring began competing in the Musselman Duals Friday, with its first match against Southern Garrett, Md. The Tigers were also scheduled to face Broad Run, Va., Martinsburg and Hedgesville.

First-day results were not available at press time.
