Who’s the best on the diamond?

Player of the Year to be named Sunday in The Register-Herald

BECKLEY — It was somewhat of a down year teamwise in area prep baseball circles, with only Independence playing in the state tournament. The Patriots fell 5-2 to Bridgeport in the Class AA title game.

On the other hand, there were several individual performances that highlighted the season. Narrowing them down was challenging, but here are the five finalists for the inaugural Register-Herald Player of the Year (in alphabetical order):

Wyatt Adkins, Independence. The Patriots shortstop followed an all-state junior season with a repeat selection as a senior. Adkins hit .477 with seven home runs, 10 doubles and five triples. He scored 50 runs and drove in 33. Adkins will play at West Virginia Wesleyan.

Jonathan Carr, Greenbrier East. The sophomore right-hander led the Spartans to a region final appearance. Carr was 5-0 with a 2.17 earned run average, and he hit .492 with 11 doubles. Those numbers earned him first-team all-state honors.

Austin Cordell, PikeView. The junior first baseman made an assault on the state RBI record, falling two short at 63. Cordell, a first-team all-stater, also hit .510 with four homers for the Panthers, who lost the regional final 2-1 to Independence on a game-ending diving catch by left fielder Tanner Muovich.

Christian Hedinger, Wyoming East. Hedinger capped off his career by leaving with virtually every school baseball record in the book. The infielder/pitcher hit a blistering .564 with 57 RBIs, 22 doubles and just four strikeouts in 117 at-bats. He also went 7-4 and 1.58 ERA, while striking out 69 and walking 16 in 57 2/3 innings. The first-team all-state honoree will play football at Concord.

Jared Jennings, Greenbrier West. Jennings put together a second straight second-team all-state season behind the plate for the Cavaliers. He hit .425 with eight homers and scored 35 runs. Jennings, who has signed to play at Alderson-Broaddus, was also 4-2 on the mound with a 2.41 ERA.

The Register-Herald Player of the Year will be announced Sunday.
